WIFN celebrates Treaties Recognition Week: 1790 Treaty at Detroit: The McKee Treaty Members of Bkejwanong were signatories on several treaties that affected the...ir traditional territorial lands. The first major land loss for the members was the 1790 Treaty at Detroit. It is also known as the McKee Treaty, after the Indian Superintendent, Alexander McKee who negotiated it and as Surrender #2. McKee, on behalf of the Crown and King George III arranged for the surrender of land that extended south from modern day Amherstburg, north to Windsor, around the eastern side of Lake St. Clair up to Walpole Island, east towards the Thames River and running south of the Thames, up to the London region, and south until Lake Erie. This vast tract of land covers 1,344,000 acres. This treaty did not include the lake beds of Lakes Erie, Huron and St. Clair and the connecting waterways. Nor did it include any islands and marshlands in the affected area. Furthermore, the treaty did not affect the harvesting rights of the Anishinaabe of Walpole Island throughout their traditional territory. The Crown viewed this treaty as land surrender in exchange for gifts. Native signatories, the principal Village and War Chiefs of the Ottawa, Chippewa (Ojibwa), Potawatomi and Huron nations viewed the treaty as a mutual sharing of resources.
