As you may know, Nanaimo-based, CRA-Registered charity International Widows & Orphans Fund (IWOF) has been supporting Congo Grace Orphanage, providing care for 35 vulnerable war orphans in the Congo (DRC) for the past 7 years. Realizing education is the way out for these children who have endured unfathomable circumstances in their young lives living in one of the poorest and most dangerous countries in the world, IWOF's initial goal was simply to send the children to school..., some for the first time. However, thanks to the incredible support of IWOF's donors, including many individuals, families, and businesses in Nanaimo and neighbouring communities, IWOF has been able to not only send the kids to school, provide them with 3 meals a day, support health care needs, and provide them with shelter and a loving environment, but IWOF has also been able to fund the purchase of a 2-acre parcel with construction ongoing for a facility that will eventaully house up to 60 orphans in multiple homes, provide a reading centre on site where widows in the community will learn to read, an agricultural area with various crops and livestock, and recreational area for the children. The goal for the project is ultimate self-sustainability, with the children reaching adulthood equipt to thrive and be contributing members of their community. Due to COVID-19, two of the annual fundraising events have had to be cancelled/postponed, including one that is relied upon to pay for their school year/supplies, necessary to ensure the children continue to receive a quality education. This video provides a great overview of the progress that has been made and the impact IWOF and Congo Grace Orphanage are having on the lives of these vulnerable children. For so many of us 2020 has been a very challenging year, with COVID-19 interrupting our social lives, our workplaces, and our finances. What is sometimes lost in our own challenges is the heightened impact the current state of the world has had on those living in the developing third world, where there is no government support - no CERB, no CEBA, no EI, no free healthcare, no free educationMillions around the world are reliant on international government aid and the support ...of charitable organizations just to survive. COVID-19 social distancing measures have significantly reduced the ability of charitable organizations to fundraise in traditional ways, and the financial constraints faced by so many have significantly reduced many donors' ability to contribute to such important causes. For those unfamiliar with the story, since 2013 the Nanaimo-based, CRA-registered charity International Widows and Orphans Fund, or IWOF (www.iwof.ca) has been supporting Congo Grace Orphanage (www.grace-orphanage.org) caring for 35 vulnerable war orphans in the Congo (DRC), one of the poorest and most dangerous countries in the world. Reading the background stories on these children (www.grace-orphanage.org/our-orphans/) is heartbreaking and unfathomable. In an economically depressed country, EDUCATION is their way out, a chance to change the course of their lives and the lives of future generations. Unfortunately, the fundraising event that has been relied upon the past number of years to largely support annual school tuition and supplies had to be canceled this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. This is a story that has touched our hearts and while we realize that we are all inundated with requests to support various groups, organizations, and charities, we wanted to at least do our small part to shine a light on the good work that is being done by IWOF and Grace Orphanage, and if you find that the story pulls at your heartstrings, these amazing kids would undoubtedly appreciate any financial support (100% tax receipt eligible) that will ensure their quality education and hope for a brighter future.
