We live life through our memories. In other words we live life in the present by living in the past. Think of the last disagreement you had with a friend. Was the disagreement based on incidents in the past? You see, memory is dictating our lives. When I was a young child, I went to visit the CN tower in Toronto. As I approached the glass floor, I saw how high in the sky I was. I became so scared of falling and from there I developed a fear of heights. Now every time I am i...n a high building, I always remember how scared I was. I feel that fear again. Even though I am not scared of heights as much anymore, I relive that experience through my memory of being afraid. What if I lived in the present only and let go of my attachment to that memory where I developed my fear of heights? The pattern of the old doesn’t allow us to experience something new. The pattern of living in the past, makes the present feel old and worn out. Past, if continuously present, will not allow present to be. And if you miss the present, you miss everything. So let go of your attachment to the memories, and notice how vibrant and exciting this present moment is when you look through the world with fresh pair of eyes.

After we wake up from sleep, we judge how our sleep was in three ways: 1) I have slept well, my mind is happy and my thoughts are clear. 2) I have a bad sleep, my mind was wandering over and over. As a result, I feel unrested. 3) I have slept like a log of wood, my limbs are heavy, my mind is still exhausted and seems to be absent.... According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, sleep that is effective is where you do not dream or at least when you wake up you don’t remember your dream. And a dreamless sleep is a glimpse into what it feels like in samadhi or enlightenment. You are present and your mind is absolutely still. Therefore it’s important to do what you can to honour true rest. This is why savasana is one of the most important parts of the class and is given the most time. Let’s take a look at the science. There are 3 stages of sleep: Stage 1 (N1) is light sleep, typically beginning soon after getting into bed and lasting roughly 710 minutes. At this point, the brain creates a slow, high amplitude activity known as theta waves. Stage 2 (N2) sleep encompasses about 50% of a night's sleep. Stage 3 (N3) is deep sleep and should encompass about 20% to 25% of a night's sleep. During this stage, the brain begins to produce the slow and deep waves of delta sleep. This is the most restful part of your sleep. REM: Your brain waves in REM sleep are closer to wakefulness than deep sleep, and your breathing becomes irregular and speeds up. Blood pressure and heart rates also increase to near awake levels in REM sleep. It's not surprising that with so much near-wakefulness, this stage is when most of your dreaming occurs. Let’s dial this information back how to how relates to Savasana. Savasana is one of the few methods out there that scientifically are able to dial the mind quickly down to your most restful state - Delta or N3. The cherry on top is that you’re not exactly sleeping either so you can fully experience the joy of nothingness. So next time you’re doing a yoga class, remember the importance of your Savasana. And if you’re practicing at home, try extending your Savasana to as long as 20 minutes and see how you feel afterwards!

Have you ever stared opportunity in the face yet walked away because you were afraid of failing? Have you ever been so afraid of failing at something that you decided not to try it at all? When we allow fear to stop our forward progress in life, we're likely to miss some great opportunities along the way. You might recognize this in balancing poses, hand or arm balancing poses...... Sometimes, you need to feel the fear and leap anyway. You never know what gifts the opportunities that come across your wah will give unless you try.

Irina Poli, one of our wonderful instructors at Jai Yoga Studio, is also one the creators behind our upcoming February challenge, The Practice. The Practice was created by Prem Kaur (@yoga.with.prem), Irina Poli (@healingwithirina) and Joanne Shih (@joanne.yoga). The 28 day challenge... is not like any other challenge out there - that’s why it’s not called a challenge, it’s called The Practice. The practice starts February 1 - so enrol now through the link in our bio!

We may not be psychic but we foresee a huge announcement coming tomorrow! Any guesses what it’s about? Want a hint? The clue lies in this riddle: I am your constant companion.... I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half of the things you do you might as well turn over to me and I will do them - quickly and correctly. I am easily managed - you must be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically. I am the servant of great people, and alas, of all failures as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures. I am not a machine though I work with the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a person. You may run me for profit or run me for ruin - it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. Who am I? See more

Today marks the sacred union of marriage between Prem and I. Our marriage was simple and cost us less than 5 rupees and took place at 5am on a chilli winter morning in Punjab, India. We saw many friends of ours have lavish weddings and enter a great amount of debt as a result. We wanted ours to be as simple as possible. Moments before our wedding ceremony, there was a raging thunderstorm. This made Prem nervous because she had to walk to the wedding venue and was afraid of ...getting mud on her simple, white clothes. This led to me being nervous because she ended up being late as a result when she told me to be there at 3am! Prem did show up just on time for the ceremony. In our wedding ceremony we walked the sacred fire four times. The fire symbolizes purification. Walking around the fire four times symbolizes the four stages (ashrams) of life which we will accompany each other with: Dharma (Duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (love) and Moksha (spiritual freedom). We were young then and didn’t know what our duty would be in life. But now, six years later we strongly know that our duty is to serve our communities locally and globally through our offering of transformative, authentic yoga. This is our dharma and we are grateful to share our dharma with you all

Millions of Indian farmers marched towards Delhi demanding that the Indian government abolish 3 new farming and deregulation laws that could jeopardize the livelihoods of farmers across India. Here’s what you need to know and how you can help amplify their voices for justice. It is moments like this we remember that yoga also teaches us to be fierce, to stand up for others, amplifying their voice. This goes under one of the 8 limbs of yoga, known as Ahimsa, which means no...n-suffering. Ahimsa means that when you see others are suffering and fighting for justice, you do what you can to help them so that they can become free from what pains them. Please share to do your part, to amplify the voices of the people who feed us and to give them more strength to stand up against the draconian @narendramodi regime. #FarmerProtest #FarmersProtest #NoFarmersNoFood #DilliChalo #IStandWithFarmers #FarmersBills #FarmBills #Sikh #kisanektazindabaad #standwithfarmers #kissan #kissanmajdoorektazindabadh repost: @theslacktivists @saffronstudios

It is especially during Navratri where women gather together and honour the Goddess Empowerment and the universal mother - Durga. Each night symbolizes a story of the divine feminine power, offering insights into her as the universal mother. Day 1 - October 17: ...Continue reading

When I was in 7th grade, I failed math. I remember spending my summer in Malaysia, when my brother called my dad to give him an update on my report card. I couldn’t believe I failed. My father sat me down and asked me, kindly, why I thought I failed. I studied so hard the night before but I couldn’t understand anything. My father then told me, patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet, meaning keep studying, practicing and stay focused on your path- there will be times yo...u get bored, or frustrated, but keep practicing and you will get a good result for sure. I took that to heart and the next year I focused on math so much I ended up getting 99% in math. This story relates to our yoga practice too- sometimes we wonder why we are here - keep focusing and practicing with dedication and for sure you will see the sweet fruits of your hard work. See more

However through this challenge we had the opportunity to see how strong our community truly is. Each and everyone of you stood by us through our toughest times. Every single person that comes through our doors always shares with us the gift of their presence, their personality and their strength. We are blessed.
