Today was a good day. It started out as most days have recently.I wake up after Anne leaves for the gym and Evelyn wanders into the room and asks "where's mommy?" i give her my usual half awake response "same place she is every morning sweetie" and she knows what i mean and doesn't ask for more information. I coax a full bear hug out of her and pretty soon we're heading downstairs together. Weekends are a little less rushed than weekdays and have a slightly different feel an...d rhythm to them. I'll sit at the kitchen island with my hoodie on and my laptop open, flipping between CNN and the new real estate listings from this past week and E will pepper me with her usual saturday morning line of questioning...what are we doing this weekend? when is winterlude? have we set a time to go to winterlude? when is mercredi? (that's the next pizza day and she needs a toonie for it, and can she have chocolate milk too)? I drink my noticeably stronger than weekday coffee a little slower and with as much cream as I can while still calling it coffee and together we wait for mom to make it back home. It's usually only a few minutes and then it's hugs all around. This is always a highlight for me...Evelyn's changed recently, she's always been an introvert and a bit of a "I'll pass on the hugs and kisses " kid, and will literally run and hide from "I Love you's". Not the last few weeks though. For some reason, the "I love you's" can't come often enough for her, she's always grabbing for my hand to hold onto and she's running to hugs rather than away from them. She's seven. She'll be eight in may. Eight. I don't know at what age dad's and daughters go from holding hands to awkward conversations and the "dad you're embarrassing me" talks but I can feel them sneaking up on us...and I'm feeling a little nervous. I'm already treating these moments as if they'll be gone tomorrow so I squeeze a bit tighter and hold a bit longer. With Anne home, I pour another cup of espresso thick coffee for the both of us. Evelyn sneaks off to sort her gems or take one of the cats hostage and Anne and i work together to see if we can sort through a few hours' worth of work in an hour so that we can put it aside for the afternoon and evening. Together, we make good time (if we monitored our efficiency the results would show Anne is a Gold medal winner and I might receive the participation award). Thanks to Anne, our olympian, the work gets done and our skating bags get packed for market square. I'll miss skating today, but that's ok and I'll meet a client for a showing instead. Anne, my best friend Nick, his daughter Arwyn, and Evelyn head to the rink for a skate and I'm lucky enough to meet them at The Red house for an after skate snack and drink. By no means is the day over, but it's already been a good day. A really good day. See more

A showing for a house starts well before you get inside, and although the condition of the exterior of the home will often provide clues as to how well the home's been maintained and what we may want to be on the lookout for once we get inside, a showing even starts before that. Unfortunately for some sellers, the factors that go into the successful sale of their home can be completely out of their control. We visited a really cute home in a great neighbourhood, with a fantas...tic school only a few minute's walk away the other day. The price was right, the # of bedrooms was right, it had a big backyard...but...when we got out of the car and headed toward the front door 2 off leash pit bulls came racing at us from next door! Hey, I really like dogs. I like all kinds of dogs. I've met and spent time with pit bulls that are super cute and cuddly, and I'm willing to wager that these two were as well. Unfortunately, when 2 that you've never met before come racing at you full steam all of those good memories disappear really, really quickly. While standing on that front porch the first thing that came to my mind was "I hope that super cat that saved that kid from the pit bull in that Facebook post I saw a couple of weeks ago is close by". Ya...you're right, that wasn't the first thing that came to my mind. That didn't come to mind until just now. That was an awesome cat though. I digress... Of course, everything turned out ok. The dogs were friendly and we had a good tour of the home. Unfortunately for that seller though their home was stroked off of our buyers' list. As a seller, you can't control everything about how your home shows and you certainly can't control your neighbours or your neighbours dogs. For buyers, on the other hand, this story does remind me that given the time and opportunity it's a great idea to spend a little extra time in the neighbourhood before jumping right into a purchase. It's something we've suggested to many clients in the past, especially when they're unfamiliar with an area.
