Currently, the NDP have been battling for referendum on a proportional representation system of voting. The BC government has announced that if a bare majority of ballots are for, the referendum will pass. While I support proportional representation, the blatant self-serving gerrymandering of the NDP Government is a bit much to take. Implementing proportional representation will likely create a decade or more of political instability as both government and the electorate come to understand what perpetual minority governments means to the legislature. As a minority government surviving on a razer thin coalition, I don’t think the NDP has a moral mandate to implement a major change that will likely create a decade or more of dysfunctional governments especially since such a change is so blatantly self serving.
With strong linkages between environmental health and mental health, it is almost as if it is a trade-off of economic advancement over pubic health. Maybe it is time to look for alternatives that both have positive effects on our economy, as well as the nature-filled world we live in (triple net sustainability?)
Port Alberni currently has several sites of land that can be used for future economic development. It may not seem as a relevant or prominent topic but these plots of land have the potential to change our towns economic structure and how we market these to potential investors is key.
