Alberta Massage Therapists will be permitted to resume services this Friday, June 12th, assuming they have all the required additional hygiene & safety supplies in place. Symptom screening prior to treatment, proper hand hygiene, and mask wearing will be required for both therapist and client. Wearing of protective aprons (by therapist) and safety eyewear (both therapist and client) will be strongly recommended but not mandatory. These are the guidelines set by my association..., the CMMOTA, and may differ somewhat from those for RMTs registered with other associations. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
[UPDATED June 25, 2020] I can now share some of the new protocols that clients can likely expect when seeking Massage Therapy in Alberta, which have been implemented by my massage association, the CMMOTA: 1. Clients will be screened for COVID symptoms and exposure risk by phone before an appointment is booked and given a screening questionnaire again prior to treatment.... 2. Starting in July, this may include having your temperature taken. Please be advised that having an elevated body temperature will mean that you will be unable to receive treatment, as a fever is now an absolute contraindication for massage therapy. 3. If you show any symptoms of illness or feel unwell in any way, you must cancel your appointment. No treatments can be performed on those who are sick or feeling unwell. Cancellation fees due to sickness or quarantine will be suspended. 4. Upon entering the clinic, clients will be asked to use hand sanitizer and put on a mask, or bring their own. Clients will be strongly encouraged to wear a mask the entire time they are in the clinic space. 5. Therapists must wear surgical/procedural masks at all times in the clinic space. Protective aprons and safety eyewear, disinfected or changed between clients, are strongly recommended. 6. When on the treatment table, while you are face up or sidelying you will be strongly encouraged to wear protective eyewear, or else have your eyes covered with a towel. According to the CMMOTA, "these measures will be in place until COVID-19 disappears, an effective vaccine has been discovered and the number of doses delivered to gain herd immunity, or an effective treatment is discovered, AND governments reduce the requirements for the use of PPE." This is a quick summary of the major changes, but there is a great deal more information in the new protocol documents, so feel free to ask about anything that you would like to know more about.
Hello everyone, Today it was announced that restrictions on Massage Therapy will be addressed in Phase 2 of the Alberta relaunch strategy. The tentative date for this is June 19 [EDIT: The date has been confirmed as June 12, 2020]. RMTs will have many challenges to overcome to re-open their practices and meet the new standards of care, myself included. I will share whatever info I can here as the process continues to unfold. Thank you for your support!... My clinic email is no longer accessible but you can reach me directly at [email protected]
The City of Calgary has officially closed all massage practices until further notice.
On the recommendation of Canadian health authorities and massage associations, I am immediately suspending my massage practice until further notice. Lets all take a pause, focus on our health and that of our loved ones. This too shall pass.

Tonight I am participating in the YWCAs "Keep a Roof Over Their Heads" fundraising event. I and other Calgarians have challenged ourselves to experience homelessness for just one night and sleep at the YWCA shelter. Like the catastrophe currently unfolding in Fort McMurray, this too is a reminder that homelessness can happen without warning to any one of us. Please support your local shelters, food banks and humanitarian organizations for all the invaluable work they do in keeping Alberta strong.
