We are sorry to hear of the passing of our long-time volunteer fundraiser, Edmund Kenny. For more than 27 years, Mr. Kenny sold tickets and raised thousands of dollars for the Janeway. Even when he wasn't feeling the best, he continued to fundraise, right up until 2019's Telethon. When he visited us, he shared a joke or story and never failed to make us laugh. Update on Eastern Health AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD Vaccination Clinic Eastern Health is advising that all appointment slots have now been filled for the AstraZene...ca/COVISHIELD vaccination clinic for residents aged 55 to 64 on Thursday, April 1, 2021. The clinic is being offered to use 210 vaccines which are set to expire this week. COVISHIELD is the version of the AstraZeneca vaccine being used in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our Miracle Kids truly amaze us. Every day, they battle rare conditions that require extensive medical attention, and often lengthy stays at the Janeway. Public Advisory: National Test of Alert Ready to Take Place Tomorrow (Wednesday, November 25), provincial and territorial emergency management organizations... will be issuing public test messages through Alert Ready, the national emergency alerting system. Newfoundland and Labrador will issue one test message to be distributed over television, radio and to compatible wireless devices at 10:55 a.m. (NST) or at 10:25 a.m. in most of Labrador (AST). The Alert Ready system was developed with many partners including federal, provincial, and territorial emergency management officials, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Pelmorex, the broadcasting industry and wireless service providers. The system enables designated government authorities to rapidly warn the public of imminent or unfolding threats to life. It is important to note that not all Canadians will receive the test alert on their wireless device. This may occur for a variety of reasons, including device compatibility, connection to an LTE network, cell tower coverage, device software and settings. Our Champion Child, Quinn Schmiedendorf was diagnosed with meningocele, one of three main types of spina bifida, a condition that develops a defect in the formation of the spine. She also had a tethered spinal cord, a condition where the spinal cord is attached (tethered) at the base of the spine and cannot move freely. Because of a growth hormone deficiency, Quinn is smaller than other girls her age, but she doesn't let that stop her! Her quirky sense of humor, her determination and courage, and her never-ending patience make her truly extraordinary. Quinns hospital journey is not yet over, but that realization will never dampen her spirits.

A CT scan is what we call SUPERHERO technology! A CT scan has the ability to rapidly obtain clear, precise views of specific or larger portions of the body. Its a truly amazing piece of equipment that assists Janeway staff to effectively diagnose, treat and monitor illness and injury. Michael Carroll is one of the bravest little boys youll ever meet. Born at 27 weeks and weighing just 2.1 lbs, Michael Carroll was diagnosed with Vactrel Association, a rare condition that can cause severe issues in different parts of the body, including the limbs, kidneys, anus, heart, esophagus and spine. For the first 18 months of his life, Michael spent most of his time at the Janeway. He has had 23 surgical procedures to date, and his journey is far from over. Despite everything he has had to deal with, Michaels determination is stronger than ever, as is his love for hockey. He WILL score that winning goal to becoming a healthy little boy.

Toris infectious smile and playful spirit has been an inspiration to her family, especially when she begins to sing and dance, two things that she absolutely loves to do. Diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a rare disorder which affects her bone marrow, Tori receives treatments to help improve her blood cell counts, usually through transfusions and special medications. Because of her low immunity, Tori and her family have to be very careful. For Tori, a common cold could mean a long hospital stay. Toris strength and positive attitude keeps her family going. Shes got a lot of dreams for her future and she plans on making them come true!

***PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT*** Eastern Health Provides Update on Resumption of Appointments and Services Eastern Health advises the public that we continue... to increase service levels that were slowed or suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We would like to reassure patients that we are working diligently to increase all services while respecting public health orders issued by the provincial Medical Officer of Health. Along with work undertaken to resume services to normal levels, Eastern Health is also working to identify strategies to safely expand capacity so that more patients can be seen faster, including: increased use of virtual care and other technologies; extension of clinic times and hours of operations where feasible; assessment and maximization of staffing levels; and decreasing number of no-shows. Patients are advised that they should only proceed to Eastern Health appointments that have been confirmed by phone or appointment letter. We ask that patients not arrive more than 10 minutes before their scheduled appointment time, as waiting area space is limited. If patients have questions regarding their appointments or would like to inquire about rebooking, they should call the phone number on their appointment letter. A listing of phone numbers for services can be found on Eastern Healths website: http://www.easternhealth.ca/contactus. Patients with questions or concerns regarding a change in their health are advised to contact their health-care provider directly, call the Healthline at 811, or proceed to the nearest emergency room if emergency services are required. We remind patients of the importance of attending your health-care appointment once it has been recently re-confirmed. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your appointment with sufficient notice (at least 48 hours) so that your appointment time can be offered to another patient. The increase in service capacity must be balanced with need to maintain precautions put in place to keep patients, visitors and staff safe throughout the pandemic. This includes physical distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, bed occupancy, availability of drugs and supplies, pre-procedure swabbing, additional cleaning protocols between patient visits, and the many additional measures added to our normal workflow processes to ensure patient and staff safety. Eastern Health empathizes with all patients and families whose appointments and procedures have been impacted. We thank patients for their support and understanding as staff, physicians and managers continue to work together to increase services. Eastern Health also reminds the public that the way health-care services are offered has evolved as a result of the pandemic. Virtual care remains the first line of service delivery when possible. Entry points have been adjusted at facilities across the region to allow for physical distancing. Please visit our website to identify the designated entry point for your appointment. Telephone registration is available for all appointments at the Health Sciences Centre, except for medical imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT etc), blood collection, cancer care, day surgery (except womens health), nuclear molecular medicine and womens health outpatients. Phone registration provides an alternative way to register for appointments and offers a quicker way to check in at the hospital. Register by phone Monday to Friday, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.: 709-777-0908/1-888-770-6339. Screening for COVID-19 will be completed through a series of questions for anyone who comes into our facilities - patients, visitors and support persons who may accompany patients to appointments. Along with the patient, support persons must provide their name and contact information for contact-tracing purposes. One support person only is permitted for outpatient appointments. Patients, support persons and visitors will be provided a mask upon entry to any Eastern Health facility. They must wear this new mask while in the facility and are asked to follow to physical distancing measures. Patients who are having specific surgical procedures, patients having an aerosol generating medical procedure (AGMP), or patients being admitted to hospital will require COVID-19 testing. Patients will be contacted in advance to book their testing appointment. Six designated visitors are permitted for inpatients in a hospital setting and residents of long-term care, personal care homes, assisted living facilities and community care homes a support person and five additional visitors. In acute care settings, an inpatient may have a maximum of two visitors per day, however only one visitor at a time. Visitation may vary depending on the unit or long-term care home so we recommend contacting the unit or home directly for specific visiting rules and requirements. The Just For Kids Transportation Group is comprised of volunteers from the transportation industry in NL who organize the annual Teddy Bear Convoy! It normally takes place annually on the weekend of the Janeway Telethon and is designed to help raise funds to support the Janeway Childrens Hospital Foundation. In 2019, the drivers from the east coast and west coast voluntarily collected pledges and raised $75,000!! 71 trucks in the Corner Brook area and 121 trucks in the St. J...ohns area took part! We are sad to hear about the passing of Olivia Reardon. We met Olivia when she was 2 years old and she became one of our Miracle Kids in 2011. We have kept in touch with Olivia and her mom Colleen as they started a fundraising project for the Janeway, "Olivia Reardon and Friends Piggy Bank for the Janeway." She looked forward to the Telethon every year and we couldnt wait to see her! Her last in-person presentation was in 2017, but her friends presented on her behalf when sh...e wasnt well enough to be there herself.
