The Person Behind The Camera Who am I? Well, my name is Jania Harnum. I'm the youngest of 3, only daughter, grew up in a tiny town BC, and have been looking through a camera viewfinder since I was 6 years old. How's I start? With the curiosity of "What would it look like to take 3 photos one right after the other, if I do different faces without stopping?"... From the moment I saw come to life what I envisioned in my head, and could show people how I see things in the world, I was hooked! I'd do extra chores, save allowance money, and beg Mum to buy film for her camera or to get disposables when we'd go into town for groceries each month. I got my first 35mm camera for my 15th birthday. Bought my first digital camera when I was 22, and my first professional DSLR when I was 31. I've photographed families, kids, weddings & engagements, maternity & new borns, animals, nature & foliage, trick riders, sow jumpers, rodeos, concerts, models, and more in my years behind the camera. I'm asked what got me into photography and how it became my passion. The truth? It's how I can communicate to people what I see in them, how I see the world. It's how I can help people realize not just their own beauty, it's how I can show them their true confidence that shines through. It's how I can "tell" people they CAN, and opening the door for them to tap into their own potential for so much more self love! This is me. And I'm an open book. The Most Violent Thing Any Model Can Do To Lose Themselves In The Fashion Industry, And How To Make It Their Superpower! The fashion industry is wraught with so many issues that this week, I will be posting about. There's only one issue that's the most violent to models. SILENCE IS VIOLENCE!!!... Even with the steps taken in recent years to change the fashion industry to become more positive, the mass majority of agencies, photographers, and companies STILL use vast methods to keep models quiet and compliant instead of being themselves as they are. Coercion of models to "look a certain way", "talk a certain way or not at all", "behave a certain way" or else their career is dead strikes massive fear in models still to this day. So, how can models turn the tables and change that fear and silence into their superpower? SPEAK UP!!! It will NOT be easy. You may lose jobs. You may be confronted by worse threats. The biggest thing to attaining your superpower is NEVER letting ANYONE treat you less than you are AS YOU ARE! Be relentless! Be vocal against that negative bullshit! (And yes it's bullshit because you are so much better than they're saying you are!) And most of all, if they don't give you a job because you won't take their shit, smile, thank them for showing you they're not a client you want to be associated with, and walk away with confidence! Today dawns the beginning of a new chapter as a journey continues. We never really truly know the extent of our reach and the effect we have in someone's life. It's because of you and something so small and simple that you said a few years ago, that helped change my life forever and I'll eternally be grateful for you.
