At 12:30 pm on the first and third Monday of each month, we will post a new question on Twitter. Check back for the answer on the following day (Tuesday) at the same time.... This week's quiz: https://twitter.com/JapanCons_va/status/1328435214637416449 In 1970, a photo of a Japanese snow monkey bathing in a hot spring was featured on the cover of LIFE magazine and it’s been world-famous ever since. These soaking simians can be found in Jigokudani Monkey Parkin Nagano. Despite the remoteness of the nearest village, about 140,000 people make the trek up the mountain to visit this hot spot every year. It is said that once the first monkey went for a dip, the others followed suit in true monkey-see-monkey-do fashion. Now Jigokudani Monkey Park is the only place in the world where you can see snow monkeys bathing in a hot spring right before your eyes. Ms. NAKATSUKA Fumiko Receives a Congratulatory Letter and Commemorative Gift from the Prime Minister of Japan upon Her Centennial Birthday (11/02/2020) On November 2, we invited Ms. NAKATSUKA Fumiko to our residence where she received a congratulatory letter and commemorative gift from the Prime Minister of Japan upon her centennial birthday. Ms. Nakatsuka was very energetic and spoke about her last visit to the residence during cherry blossom season, while ...occasionally telling jokes in her Kansai dialect. We were very pleased to show Ms. Nakatsuka the newly completed Japanese garden at the residence, and hope she felt a little bit like she was back in her Japanese hometown. We hope that Ms. Nakatsuka continues to enjoy a happy and healthy life together with her loving family. https://www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp//nakatsuka_100_en 20112 112 https://www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp//nakatsuka_100_j.

This week's quiz: https://twitter.com/JapanCons_va/status/1323361790751727616 The Japanese have been passionate about the colour red for hundreds of years. Parents dress their children in red at shrine rituals to ward off evil spirits. At traditional weddings, the bride’s lips are painted red to protect her from misfortune. ‘Beni-bana’ or safflower petals are used to make a dye, which brings out a unique shade of red despite the yellow flower consisting of only about 0.3% red pigment. November’s woodsy diorama draws us toward the creatures and habitat of Japan’s countryside. In Japan, owls are associated with protection and good luck, a belief likely originating from the pronunciation of the Japanese word for owl which is fukurou (,). Depending on how it is written it can mean good luck, or it can mean protection from adversity. In either case, having those associations has made owls a popular subject for decorations and good luck charms or eng...imono () often attached to cell phones or handbags. Nation-wide there are twelve species of owl including the world’s largest, the Blakiston’s Fish Owl. Native to Hokkaido, it is an endangered but protected species on the way to recovery. There is other good news for owls in Japan. Although the country is densely populated in urban areas, it issurprisinglyalso one of the most highly forested industrialized countries in the world. Ranked in the top three, with roughly 67% of its land forested, it means more livable habitat in which owls and other creatures can roam and thrive. This family of owls is perched on tree stumps displaying the leaf silhouettes from trees that exhibit vibrant fall colours (ky, ) throughout Japan. Just as Japanese appreciate spring-time cherry-blossom viewing, they also enjoy viewing the colourful seasonal change of foliage that occurs in autumn (momijigari, ). Cherry trees, whose blossoms brightened the spring landscape everywhere bring colour again when their leaves change. Gingko trees, which display brilliant shades of yellow, can be found in particular abundance at Meiji Jingu Gaien () in Tokyo. The emblematic Japanese maple (momiji), with a palette of yellow, orange, and red colours can be seen nation-wide with popular locations being Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, Hakone in Kanagawa, and of course at many locations in Kyoto. Altogether they bring a flourish of warm colours before the colder hues and temperatures of winter prevail. *Catch our diorama series portraying the seasonal atmosphere of Japan posted at the beginning of each month.
