Japan Rail Pass + Light luggage = Fun, easy and efficient way of exploring Japan.. Navigating the busy, crowded Japanese train stations with their multitude of ...stairs and escalators while dragging heavy luggage is not recommended. Besides, there is not a lot of room for luggage on the train. See images taken from a bullet train. The overhead rack will barely fit a 24 inch suitcase and if you are lucky and there is still room, you may be able to stow your luggage behind the last row of seats in each carriage.
