The onion forest is coming on thick! I know it’s feeling a lot like winter out there, but if this year is anything like last year, in 6 weeks time it will be 30 degrees and we’ll all be sweating in shorts & seeking shade. A year in review: 2020 was a whirlwind that we are all going to remember for a long time to come. On top of everything, we will also remember 2020 as our first year on our new farm as well our 5th year in business (oops, we missed our own birthday!). Farming in new soil has its own unique set of anxiety provoking unknowns and challenges. We had our fair share of set backs, crop failures, new soil born challenges and deficiencies to deal with. Equipment failures, new bugs, se...ed shortages and so on (and so forth). But that is all part and parcel to farming and every year will have its own set of similar challenges and heart breaks. One thing we will definitely remember is that 2020 was a GREAT year for growing. For the first time in a few years, we had even rain throughout the season. We had no flooding and no drought. For all that 2020 threw at us, it was unquestionably a blessed year as far as growing conditions and weather goes. Another thing we will always remember is everyone’s kindness, support and enthusiasm as we all traversed this painful and challenging year together. You guys have really made a difficult year easier and we feel so fortunate for our little community and the people within it. Farming has been both of our dreams for a long time and it’s you who has made that possible for us. Seems fitting that for our first real snow fall of the year, we spend the days inside drinking coffee and dreaming up plans for the return of sunnier days. I know it seems like we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but for us the 2021 growing season begins in February as we seed our first flowers and onions for field and transplants for greenhouse spring production. Our exciting new fall trial crop: Perpetual Chard. Spinach has broken our hearts too many times and so we have casually decided to never grow it again (spinach). So far what we have learned from it is that it makes an excellent substitute for spinach and grows 1000% better than it. Our new root washer is finally in action!! This is a major game changer for us. Before this, we would wash all our roots very inefficiently by hand (and be very sore, wet and probably cold doing it) This cuts our processing time by more than half and saves our bodies so much stress by cutting down on the amount of times we have to handle each crate. Less lifting makes for happy & more sustainable farmers .
