Last week we found this adorable little screech owl catching a nap while basking in the glow of the setting sun. Reminder 2021 Calendars are selling out. Message me if you are interested in one. Right before this barred owl starting flying towards me (see the video I posted yesterday) I took this shot. It was shot handheld at 360mm 1/100sec at f5.6 and an ISO of 2000. In order to get that mystical, almost ethereal, feel to this image I shot through a small opening in some bushes in front of me. When doing this you can essentially focus through the stuff around the edge of the image making it almost disappear but creating this effect in the image. It makes for a m...uch cleaner image. I try to keep as much else in the image out of focus so that the owl is more prominent and remains the focal point. I really like the mood in this shot and how it turned out. I hope you like it too. I had this amazing encounter today at dusk. I had to cut a few minutes out of the middle of the video because it was just too big. This barred owl was actively hunting and it had already flown closer to me once to the position it's in at the start of this video. It was getting darker so I decided I would switch to video and see what happens. Just moments after I switched to video this amazing encounter ensued. I'm sure that anyone seeing me in this field just feet from th...is owl probably thought "look at that annoying photographer getting so close to that owl". Well at least I have proof that the owl came to me! It sure put on a good show. I was scared to move as it was so close to me. I stood almost completely twisted trying to video it without moving. At the end of the video you can actually here me take a deep breath as I was pretty much holding it the whole time even though I was very aware of my heart pounding. This was the end to a perfect day! I would ask that anyone commenting on the video that knows where this is please to not share the location to others for the safety of this owl. I took the day off of work yesterday and today to enjoy these last warm days of the year. I failed miserably at finding any wildlife to photograph yesterday but today was a new day. This morning I stumbled across two barred owls and also found a cute little screech owl. Here's a shot of the first barred owl. [Waterloo, Ontario, Canada]... View full screen for best detail.
