Acupuncture reduced joint pain intensity compared to TENS, to a statistically significant degree. Satisfaction with treatment also was higher in the acupuncture group vs. the control (TENS) group.

Creating an instant, positive change for someone in need never gets old. And patients thank me everyday, but when one shares their experience in such an articulate way, it really hits home that I’m doing exactly what the universe intended. Shoot me a message to see if Acupuncture can help you (it totally can)!

Dry needling can be extremely effective at releasing knots/trigger points. The resulting contractions may be uncomfortable but are highly therapeutic! If I get 5-6 good fasciculations (twitch responses), I’m done - there is no need leaving someone unnecessarily sore or bruised. It’s very important to do your research and find an acupuncturist who specializes in ortho/sports medicine. When done correctly there should be an instant improvement with muscle tension, ROM, and pain! Shoot me a message for an appointment!

This is an athlete who was in to see me for the very first time. After correcting all noticeable dysfunctions, he was immediately impressed with the instant, measurable results. The only remaining issue was that he wasn’t able to reach as far to the floor while touching his toes as he used to. I told him to jump back on the table to quickly zap his Glute Max on both sides. 30secs later, not only could he touch his toes, he was able to put his hands flat on the floor! This point is approximately 3 inches lateral to S4. Shoot me a message to see what all the hype is about!

Although my techniques may look scary, they’re actually quite reasonable - especially considering the amount of relief a person will experience! Electroacupuncture is super effective! It is meant to be a non-painful stimuli, so patient comfort is everything. Don’t take my word for it, listen to pro boxer and stuntman Kyle McNeil!

Functional muscle testing is very important if you want to see superior clinical outcomes. Its a huge part of assessment and will always lead you in the right direction! Here, Im testing the psoas. As part of the deep tensional vector (with the QL) it is often affected in people who do a lot of sitting, with football players who are often in a 3-point stance, or even runners where it can become a repetitive strain injury. Over time, the psoas can develop trigger pts that can be painful and/or tight. Shoot me a message for more info on how we reset the psoas!

Yintang. In this case, because this point benefits the nose, it is used as part of a treatment to restore sense of smell! Gentle Estim creates a normalization of the temporal branch of the facial nerve (in this scenerio) resulting in a contraction of the Procerus muscle. This is just one reason why this point is also a go-to for the treatment of frontal headaches!

When treating medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow) its always important to give some love to pronator teres!

Female patient with a TMJ diagnosis. Ive been seeing this a lot lately - What presents as jaw pain is actually a dysfunction related to the movement of the shoulder blade. After restoring a weak serratus, then giving some electric love to the SCM, upper trap, levator scapula, and masseter there was an immediate shift in what the patient was feeling. She left with huge improvements in strength, stability, and pain!

Achilles pain? Release the soleus! This muscle runs under the calf, assisting in plantar flexion. It attaches directly to the Achilles tendon, so if the muscle isnt moving, the tendon isnt moving either!

Shoulder pain? Limited range of motion? Shoot me a message, well have a chat. Even if your doctor said youll have to live with it forever... theres always hope!

Anyone with tight muscles needs to try Cupping!

This patient is an avid runner (80+kms/week). She has mild bunions that are becoming painful and limiting range of motion in both big toes. Sp3 (flexor hallicus brevis), Sp4 (abductor hallicus), extensor hallicus longus, flexor hallicus longus. After restoring function in the hips and quadratus lumborum, 20mins of gentle estim followed by a few minutes of tuina makes for a great little treatment!

Levator/Upper trap combo. Awesome for neck pain and inter-scapular pain!

Most people have heard of the IT-Band. Being connective tissue that runs from the hip down the lateral portion of the leg, ending approximately 6 inches below the knee, it can cause all sorts of problems. When the IT-Band feels tight, people will stretch it, rub it, use a foam roller, or even drive a little ball into it. Some of that MAY be helpful (and painful), and of course there can be multiple factors involved with any pathology. But you MUST give some love to the TFL (Tensor Fascia Latae). It literally becomes the IT-Band. If the TFL is tight it will draw upward on the fascia creating an uncomfortable tension. Often times this can present as lateral knee pain! Reset the TFL!

When treating low back pain, its always important to give love to some key core muscles. In this case I used low frequency Estim to strengthen the rectus abdominis. This will also neuromodulate the lumbar plexus which is often irritated with LBP.

Did you know that Acupuncture can treat scars?? They are mostly fibrous connective tissue made up of collagen. This tissue can be an irritation to the system (noxious/painful stimuli). This may result in limited ROM, an increased pain signal, or localized muscle weakness. How do we treat this? By using needles to break up the scar tissue and then applying high frequency Estim for 15mins to the scar itself. This will help make the scar softer which will improve function and sensation. Message me for more info!

This is a great way to invigorate the entire lower portion of the posterior kinetic chain! -Super comfortable. -Minimal needles. -Maximum results. ... This patient was pumped with the dramatic, immediate improvement with strength, pain, and range of motion! Shoot me a message for an appointment!

I had to see what all the fuss is about! It was definitely cold but quite comfortable. Rob guides you through the entire process to reduce any fear of the unknown. The 2 minutes flew by. Now, 4hrs later Im feeling great! There is a lot of good research on the benefits of cryotherapy! It can help with a number of issues including boosting athletic performance/recovery, reducing inflammation, and activating cold-shock proteins (they flip on specific genes that help us live longer!). And bonus, a 3 minute session can burn up to 800 calories (thats equivalent to a 45min run)! I highly recommend!

Big news! Starting next week, I will be available for appointments every Tuesday at Maritime Cryotherapy, downtown Hfx. Combining my treatments with Nova Scotias only full body cryotherapy is a no brainer! Athletes rejoice!

From time to time we all suffer with pain between the shoulder blades. This often points to a dysfunction of the Rhomboid(s). Any practitioner must be ultra-vigilant to avoid deep needling anywhere around the ribs, and these needles are only a few millimeters deep. There are active motor points along the medial border of the scapula which are perfect for the reset of muscular sympathetic tone. Alternatively, another way to neuromodulate that same Dorsal Scapular Nerve is to stimulate the Levator. Ive seen tonnes of Rhomboid release without even touching them!

Auricular Acupuncture is an excellent addition when treating chronic pain! In this case, the patient has suffered with low back pain for 2yrs. She had 2 active points on the Lumbar Spine area of the antihelix. I used the same technique bilaterally. I find 1hz/25mins is quite effective. It is important to make sure the Estim is not painful - this will only lead to MORE pain. Other auricular options include: a)any active point combined with Shen men. b)Shen men + Pt.Zero for global chronic pain. c)Shen men + Thalamus point for global chronic pain. Everyone loves ear needles! Afterwards, I place seeds on the active areas (+Shen men) to further enhance the treatment. 2x/week for 1 month may be necessary but generally speaking, there should be a noticeable improvement after a few treatments.

I cant help it, the cabin fever is real! #dadjokes Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a common complaint where a patient feels like the shoulder is stuck or frozen. This can happen for various reasons mainly including: 1)Chronic lack of movement... Rotator cuff injury Broken arm Stroke Recovery from surgery 2)Systemic diseases Diabetes Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) Cardiovascular disease Tuberculosis Parkinsons disease Did you know Acupuncture is an excellent treatment option for frozen shoulder?! Of course, if the underlying cause is systemic the treatments are much more of an involved process to first try and balance the excess/deficiency. Generally, there is a dramatic improvement with pain and range of motion after 2-3 treatments!
