Sir Arthur Conan Doyle laid the cornerstone of the Union Church in 1914. Known as the Little While Church in the Rockies, the original church held about 50 wor...shippers. In 1927 an extension was added to the rear of the church and an organ purchased. The opening of the Banff-Jasper Highway in 1940 resulted in an increase in visitors to the town of Jasper and plans were drawn up for a new church, meeting hall, and manse to accommodate the ever-increasing congregation. In 1965 the United Church congregation sold its building to the Baptist group in anticipation of constructing a new church. When lease complications arose, the congregation of St. Mary and St. George offered the United Church use of its facilities. The relationship continued for nine years until the United Church found a new location in 1974. JYMA 995.55.11 - Union Church in the 1930s. From newspapers and milk to room service at the Jasper Park Lodge, bicycles were used to transport goods and people across the town for over a hundred years. Lo...cals had no real need for cars - everything came in on the rails thanks to the Canadian Northern Railway, Grand Trunk Pacific, and the Canadian National Railway, and there were no paved roads in town until the 1930s. The only real cars around were the chauffeurs between the rail station and Jasper Park Lodge, and the few cars brave enough to travel the thicket between Jasper and Hinton. Biking was the way to go and still remains a popular mode of transportation today.

From Loni Klettl....Now, this is a really great story regarding serendipity. Just to add to the story, Dad, in the 1950s was friends with one of the Moberly's who was a packer/wrangler for Outfitters and JNP. He always spoke very highly of this man. Thanks to Pamela Brown for the photos and story
