Yesterday I shared 3 of the peppers that we’re growing this year over on crofting.ca The next few we discuss are: Lemon Drop Amish Pimento Sweet Pepper... Spanish Padron Tapas Red Manzano Why did we choose these? When did we start them? (Spoiler: Early) Where are they native to? As well as the growing requirements for each type and when we can expect peppers from them! Have you heard of these? Which varieties are you growing?

When crocuses bloom ... Plant phenology helps us understand our garden conditions so we can plant when the soil is at the right temperature for specific seeds. More on that in the blog - crofting.ca #potager2021 #potager #vegetablegarden #vegetables #zone5 #zone5gardening #ontariogarden #ontariogardens #ontariogardening #ontariozone5 #smallscalefarming #smallfarm #knowyourfood #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #springiscoming #spring #crocus #springblooms #stayner #collingwood #wasaga #creemore #thornbury #clearviewtownship #brucegreysimcoe #southgeorgianbay #sgeorgianbay #simcoecounty

A lot is going on around here! More than IG will fit so: Highlights here, Details of our escapades on croting.ca Rejiggered Tallgrass Prairie plans.... A tiny little cabbage seedling. Successful rosemary clippings. Josh and the birdhouse. Delaying spring cleanup for bird and bug’s sake. Hardscaping long game. Grumpy hens and nesting boxes. And, to no one’s surprise, I don’t want to prune my peppers.

Best guess: How many trees do you think each Woodpecker needs? On average, how many times do you think a Pileated parent visits its nest each day with food? The expression eats like a bird took on a whole new meaning while researching this part. MANY small meals throughout the day. No seriously, 210 small meals. Flying around, hitting stuff, picking up bugs to take home.... Can you imagine feeding your children That many times a day? And then there’s the carpenter ants #pileatedwoodpecker #pileated #pileatedwoodpeckers #pileatedwoodpeckersofinstagram #woodpeckers #woodpecker #woodpeckersofinstagram #woodpeckerhabitat #oldgrowthforest #oldgrowth #oldgrowthontario #ontariozone5 #ontarionativespecies #ontariobirding #discoverontario #stayner #wasaga #collingwood #clearviewtownship #creemore #brucegreysimcoe #simcoecounty

Do you live in a more grassy, prairie-like area? Or a cool, shady, forested spot? Until now I’ve mostly explored the Tallgrass Prairies because that’s what I have, but today’s blog switches gears to a shadier space If you’re trying to grow a garden, or want to help the little ecosystem in which you live, it might be helpful to understand what you’re working with first.... Oh and have you ever wondered what constitutes a place reforested? Yeah me too, and I found some interesting stuff on it! #ontarioforests #oldgrowth #oldgrowthforest #forest #forestbathing #forestlovers #shinrinyoku #greatlakesstlawrencelowlands #greatlakesstlawrenceforest #ontarionature #ontariobirds #birdingontario #treesofinstagram #treescape #treestagram #trees #tree #woodland

Time for a pepper pot-up party! I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets stressed out with the potting up process right? Also, are you team prune your peppers or team leave it alone?... This year we’re team both, For Science! OH! And if you want to grow along with me and track your pepper progress I made a chart you can use! It’s like being lab partners, kind of #gardening #vegetablegarden #veggiegarden #ontario #ontariogardens #ontariogardener #ontariogardening #zone5gardening #zone5 #potager

Some more of that wondrous ice I posted in my stories. It grew like quartz in ribbons and swirls. I wish I knew what the result was called. It was in a particularly wet and muddy patch near a little creek. As people walked over it, near freezing, (I assume) the pressure forced water to the surface where it froze? I remember reading something about wet ground trod on overmuch can liquify but can't for the life of me find the term in Google search. Apparently I am too specific ...or mildly insane. If you know what I'm trying to remember message me please #staynerecopark #stayner #clearviewtownship #ice #icecrystals #iceformations
