The first class of Osteopathy graduated from the American School of Osteopathy in 1894. Among them were 16 men and 5 women. At a time when there was very little choice for women to advance beyond a high-school education, let alone go to a co-ed school with males, the founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, opened his doors to anyone and everyone. "I have always advocated that a woman had as much sense as a man, or she would not have been called to be his help-meet and co...mpanion. A question: What man wants to spend his days with a woman fool? I think she is in as much danger of spending her days with a fool as he is. I opened wide the doors of my first school for ladies. Another and a much greater reason I will offer and emphasize. Why not elevate our sister’s mentality, qualify her to fill all places of trust and honor, place her hand and head with the skilled arts. I know no reason she should not study anatomy, physiology, chemistry and all the machinery and laws of life I will say by way of encouragement that all ladies who have graduated from this school and gone out in the world, have done well financially, and are made the guests of the best society in the land. They are well received and honored as ladies, and well paid for their skill. Places are open and ready for all that have a diploma from this school. And for the first time I will say, come on and qualify yourselves to take your places of usefulness. Do your part well, and a feast awaits you. -AT Still There is a tremendous amount of pride for my profession in helping society overcome the stereotypes of its time. I have been lucky to have been raised and surrounded by strong women who never paid attention to any sort of gender roles or rules society has placed against them, and whose lives have given meaning to their friends, families, communities, and society as a whole. So thank you to all the women out there who showed me they were never anything less than equal to doing any man's work! Happy International Women's Day!

A lot of people are dumbfounded when they experience the results of Osteopathy. They've often lost the belief that their body can still heal, passing it off as old age. But that same force that allows us to digest our food while we're focusing on 100 other problems, is also at work resting and repairing our cells constantly throughout the day and into the night. It works through our blood, our nerves, and our lymphatic system. I remember working on a lady in my school days ...who was having to go in once a month to the doctors office for this irritating itch in her inner ear, where she'd receive another round of antibiotics, which worked for a couple of weeks before she had to go in again. As a student, I had a faint idea of what I was doing, but I worked on her upper neck and worked to relieve some jaw tension to allow the blood to and from the ear to flow more freely. A couple of months later I saw her again and asked her how her ear had been. I could see a smile creeping up and a sense of relief come to her face immediately. She told me her ears no longer itched, she had no reason to visit the doctor and that this irritating problem of a couple years had just vanished a week after that treatment. Sometimes Osteopathy works beyond just the joints of our bodies. We look to find where the real restrictions in the body are, gently adjusting the nerves via the fascia, muscles and ligaments. And behold, the joint problems start to melt away, the body's inherent capacity to heal is restored and your body simply works better. This is why your structure matters, and regardless of what your body has gone through, there is always a way of helping it work the way it was meant to. Aging is only an excuse. . . #Osteopathy #yycosteopathy #yychealth #yychealthyliving #alternativehealth

Written over 125 years ago but still true today. I can't say enough about good balance and recovery. The more we push our bodies, the more rest we need. If we use our strength, the body needs time to rebuild the tissue we just broke down. If we tip the scales too much one way, eventually it has to swing back, and our bodies stop responding to exercise, even resulting in injury. But what about the mind? Start a person with a job, say 35 hours a week. You want to be good at... your job or advance, you add some emails or extra work hours in, 40 hrs/wk. You REALLY want to advance? Throw 10 on top of that. Partner, dog, kids? Even more on the list. New house, new car, more payments, add some accounting hours in. Before you know it you'd be lucky if you get 8 hours for your brain to process it all. Treatment for this type of person will always need to focus on relaxation first. Calming, rhythmic, inhibitory. Strong force applied to the muscles and tissues to the body forces it to respond to even more stimuli. Headaches, digestive issues, hard time sleeping, and increased pain can all be side effects from too aggressive of a treatment on an overtaxed nervous system. So when it comes down to intense exercising, choosing things to bring into your life, or even selecting what type of therapy is best for you, remember that less, often leads you to more. #yycosteopathy #alternativehealth #Osteopathy #yychealth #yychealthyliving
