During the COVID-19 Crisis courthouses are mostly shut down, but they ARE open to assist with urgent matters, including urgent family matters. If you or your children are subject to family violence or need urgent assistance in a matter related to a child's well being, we can still help you! The link below will take you to notices on courthouse closures. ... The Provincial Court is still hearing urgent family matters as follows: a. requests for urgent relief relating to the safety of a child or parent; b. requests to obtain or set aside protection orders, or urgent orders involving parenting time, contact with a child or communication between parties; c. urgent issues that must be determined relating to the well-being of a child including essential medical decisions or issues relating to relocation, non-removal, wrongful removal or retention of a child; d. in a child protection case, all urgent or statutorily mandated matters, including the initial presentation hearing, the protection hearing, applications for supervision orders and for extension of time, and any other urgent motions or hearings; and e. applications to suspend, change or cancel any order for imprisonment or committal pursuant to the Family Maintenance Enforcement Act. The Supreme Court of BC is still hearing urgent fmaily matters as follows: Essential and urgent matters in family proceedings include those in which the following relief is sought: Orders relating to the safety of a child or parent due to a risk of violence or immediate harm (e.g., a protection order, conduct orders, or exclusive possession of the home); Orders relating to the risk of removal of a child from the jurisdiction (e.g., relocation, non-removal, wrongful removal or retention of a child); and Orders relating to the well-being of a child (e.g., essential medical decisions, urgent issues relating to parenting time, contact or communication with a child that cannot reasonably be delayed). https://www2.gov.bc.ca//courthouse-se/courthouse-locations
During the COVID-19 crisis, observing the risk to our staff and family members who are at risk, WHILE WE WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE TO SERVE YOU, we are closing our doors to the public through April. Our office supports the goals of The Association of Legal Aid Lawyers, however we believe we have an ethical obligation to continue to work for all of our existing clients and to continue to help provide access to justice for as many as we can. Family violence does not just mean physical violence.
As someone who works with a lot of families and a young father myself, this issue is one I hear a lot about, and this comic is a nice, easy to follow summary of how and why the anti-MMR vaccine movement began and why it is mistaken.
