Dear Members Unfortunately covid -19 is still with us and provincial restrictions in place. This means that we have cancelled the Juan de Fuca Community trails hikes for Saturday March 6 and Saturday March 13 Hiking bunches people but there is so much open space on the Whiffin Spit , we were well separated last year when we were removing broom. 2020/2021 has been a super year for broom... We will be calling a number of flash pulls, on short notice, over the next month Covid precautions: Every one brings their own favourite tool for broom removal; Pruning shears, trowel, broom puller, water, mask, gloves. We have access to 2 Classic Extratigators and 1 Junior, soon a Baby gator will join the mix. We will work from 9 to 11:30 am meeting in the parking lot and walking to the site; If you have a day of the week or time of day that works best for you let us know. We may schedule a 1 to 3;30 time slot as I would really like to see us get on top of the broom again. We remain hopeful that the Saturday hikes can resume in April. In the meantime we hope that you have been able get out on the trails Thank you for being a member in good standing for 2021 Rosemary

Check out our website at www.jdftrails.ca and read about the Sooke Urban Trail system we are working on with the District of Sooke. We have recently completed the kiosk, map tables and way finding signs and posts for the Stickleback trail. The Stickleback Trail traverses Sooke from The Galloping Goose at Kirby Rd. to Clarkson Park up in Mountain heights. Clarkson Park allows access to Broom Hill Crown Land Trails. So here is the challenge: Start at the middle at the kiosk ...in John Phillips Memorial Park or at either end of the Stickleback Trail and cycle or walk to the other. Note where you get confused and loose the trail and let us know at [email protected] . We will review all the places where signage needs to be improved and where possible correct the ambiguity. Alert: finding the signs is a bit like an easter egg hunt. It is easy to miss an arrow or indication. The following is a description of the route. The planned road paintings have not yet been completed; a casualty of COVID. Start at The Galloping Goose at Kirby Rd and take a picture of the map on the map table found there. Proceed to Sooke River Road to the bridge and cross. (Recommend that cyclist dismount on the bridge). Proceed and turn up Phillips Rd. to SEAPARC. Cross at the SEAPARC entrance and follow the bike paths past the softball diamond and up to Throup Rd. Turn up towards Journey Middle School and enter the District Park where you sill find another map table. Follow the way finding posts to the Kiosk and admire the great work of Terry, Murray and Gus. Turn up Otter Point Rd to Rhodonite and proceed to the end at Broom Hill Park. Thence left onto pyrite and Right onto Beaton to North French. Right onto North French to the trail system on the left to Mountain Heights. Enjoy some great scenery. Mountain Heights to Clarkson and you will see a Map Table on the left up the hill. This is the formal end of the Stickleback Trail. The Society is justly proud of this effort though plans for a Community event have not yet materialized due to COVID. We do hope to add to the Stickleback with the Sun Run trail going into Sun River across the DeMamiel and the Sea Walk trail going South to the Rotary Pier. Enjoy and let us know the experience.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm for removing broom and other invasive plants from the Whiffin Spit. I know that the scheduling was wrong for many of you who would have liked to join us but broom seed is long lived and we will be back on the Spit in late February or March of 2021 . We did not complete the sweep of the Spit today but it is too late in the season to continue. We would end up tramping down too much vegetation The public passes on their thanks as well. Many people have stopped and expressed appreciation for our efforts. We will be doing our annual full day removal or restoration project with the District of Sooke and the rest of the community in the Fall,. Where and when is to be determined Thanks again Rosemary

Dear Members COVID -19 and the order from the provincial health authority that it is critical to keep up social distancing means that the Juan de Fuca Community Trails Society’s April Hikes are cancelled . We hope that the virus situation will have settled by May and that we can work out a protocol for resuming our first and second Saturday Hikes. We miss them & all of you. I hope you have been able to get out and about a bit with out crowding. Our facebook page has some... suggestions for staying distant on the trails and our web site has a list of some of the area’s trails I think the only thing happy with this is the broom on the Whiffin Spit, heaving a sigh of relief that we have been unable to complete this years sweep to keep in check. It can not believe it’s luck; everyone gone, leaving it in peace to grow. Stay well Rosemary Email jdf.cts2gmail.com Web jdftrails.ca Facebook Juan de Fuca Community Trails Society 250 642 2767
