As we mark the centenary of the discovery of insulin, at JDRF we are championing the way, investing in diabetes research that will move us beyond insulin and accelerate towards a cure. This JDRF-funded research project by Sernova Corp is paving the way towards a cure using cell replacement therapy, the Cell Pouch System to produce insulin in people with type 1 diabetes and help patients maintain more consistent blood sugar levels. 99 years ago on this day in 1922, the first injection of insulin was given to 14-year old Leonard Thompson at Toronto General Hospital by Sir Frederick Banting's team.
