This is me, circa 2001, on the day I graduated from what was then known as one of the most cut-throat interior design programs in Canada. And pretty sure that’s you @kats_118, getting a close-up shot of the exact moment when tears began to well in my eyes. I had done it. I had survived design bootcamp, overcame all the obstacles thrown my way, and managed to snag the award for top graduating interior design student of that year. I’m not much of an advocate. I mean, I ha...ve strong opinions about stuff, but you won’t ever catch me burning my bra on any street in protest. Truthfully, I’m also not very receptive when social media is used to be influential or opinionated. I’ve got that you do you; I’ll do me type of personality. But I must admit, misconceptions of my profession do ruffle my feathers on occasion, and lately I’m feeling uncharacteristically audible about it. For the record, I am a certified interior designer. I tend to let it slide when people refer to me as that decorator girl; I’ve certainly been called worse things; but it does give me that momentary nails-on-a-chalkboard type feeling. That’s likely because I spent 4 gruelling, and sleepless years of my youthful existence studying about human scale, acoustics, lighting, life safety, building code, accessibility, sustainable design, technical construction, and so many other elements that make a space function before it can even think about looking pretty. The interior design profession is chalk-full of stigma and misinterpretation. What may seem (to some) like superfluous glam on the surface, actually requires a significant amount of rigorous training that NEVER ENDS with additional CEU courses being required annually to maintain my certification. Furthermore, as is the case with so many other professions out there, being properly trained and qualified in this gig is crucial. After almost 20 years of formal practise in various facets of interior design, I know how important it is to be well versed in this complex trade. Homeowners are putting one of their most valuable assets - their homes, into my hands. I take this very seriously, and intend to protect my industry and title by advocating to reshape public perception of what it actually means to be an interior designer.

There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise...said someone probably very smart. As of late, I’ve been multi-tasking HARD to keep all my new builds on track while still being present for my renos, consultations, and for my family. Luckily, I’m a Capricorn, and multi-tasking is my jam. Some days, I amaze myself at all I’ve accomplished. Other days, I put my keys in the fridge. Just having a Yeah Me! moment over here as I face another tiring yet rewarding day of making stuff look good.
