I’ve had my best year in real estate, deepened the most beautiful bonds with my kiddos, strengthened friendships with the most remarkable women who are strong and intelligent and... loving and brave, mother nature has proven she’s my goddess, I have laughed my ass off more times than I can count, have enjoyed time with family, adore my sissy, explored the BC coast and have found my inner mojo and peace !! And to top off being a lucky girl I have also joined a clean technology start up company !! How many people get to work alongside a best friend and watch them flourish and kick ass as a CEO ?! . Proud of these kiddos for being eager to get back to school! Relieved they are headed back towards friendship, much needed companionship, inclusivity, mental health, learning and challenge. They walk with courage and with the naivety needed to weather this storm with open minds. They remind me of resilience. . I feel a heaviness in the recognition of their losses, restrictions, unknowns and hard days. I convince myself their masks are temporary. . I hope for a calm transitio...n. (Please lord - let their teachers be calm, brave, level headed and with common sense. Please do not let them inflict unwarranted fear.) . I trust I am intuitively PROTECTIVE. . I know there will be a requirement for much needed GRACE to deal with differing opinions, antagonists and challenges. Facts and common sense over fear always. Understanding our true level of risk and moving forward a must. . But what I feel the very very most in this moment (despite my tears in watching them walk away) is GRATITUDE. For six beautiful months together. For quiet days, subtle moments, precious memories, the very best laughs and for growing exponentially so much closer. We camped, biked, hiked, we ate too much candy, traveled to new and beautiful places, we enjoyed cousins and aunties and uncles and grandparents and the best of friendships. We loved life at the farm, in the country, in the mountains, in the city, on the beach, at the lake. We enjoyed the mundane, adventure and everything in between. We choose hugs always. I’m going to miss the shit out of them. . September is a beautiful month - perfect for a reset. My crazy old reclusive neighbour has died. He died alone in his home. He did not have any friends on our street - perhaps he didn’t deserve them - I’ve heard many stories. . When I moved in next to him 5 years ago I told him he had a clean slate with me - expecting only mutual respect. That allowed him to let his guard down and we grew to be companions of sort. He shoveled my sidewalks in the winter and I mowed his lawn in the summer. I helped push him out of the snow copio...us times and convinced him winter tires were a must. He offered me chocolates and candy canes, I listened to his stories, regrets, moments where he acknowledged he could have made better choices. I celebrated his hair cuts and helped to make him laugh. . He was a crazy old soul, sad and lonely. Normally his pants were unbuckled and falling off, one time they even dropped while he was carrying something to his door. He smelled, his pants covered in urine, he was dirty and disheveled. . He trusted me because I was kind to him and he deserved that. I was the keeper of his son’s contact information for such a day as now. His son said he knew his dad had no friends left and that he spoke well of no one....no one except me. His dad made a point always of telling his son I was kind and nice to him. I made an impact in this crazy old mans life for 5 short years and he deserved that. (despite the fact I’m positive he slashed my tires the week I moved in). . My point - we are all in a bad place right here and now. Racism and fear and hate and violence and sad theories on this pandemic and terrible leaders doing everything but leading. And all this running parallel to love and compassion and empathy and simplicity. We all have stories of hurts, traumas, childhood disappointments - you name it ! Being a human is messy and painful and glorious and beautiful. We don’t all have to make huge changes in this world - there is no pressure to do so. . But if I can find beauty in a crazy old man who peed his pants, if I can be a good person, and try to love whomever I can, if I can help and always give what I can - then I’m sure we all can. . Love is the most powerful lesson. . We all have extra time on our hands, we are all trying our best to give meaning to our days and nights. All this time and yet my house is still messy? I’m fumbling my way around ‘stay at home’ exercise routines, I’m reading, taking courses, listening to podcasts and lots of loud music, trying to work, trying to find new work and possibly new career ideas, trying to find purpose - trying to find value and trying to find ways to give to other...s....to also be useful and helpful - because I have the ability to do so. . Likely many of us have pressure on ourselves to come out of this ‘better’, a better mom, a better partner, friend, smarter, more profound, wiser, more fit, a teacher, soccer coach, chef, with a new career plan and grand ideas! But tell me what’s better than? Better than what? . For me social distancing is no big deal, honestly lately my days are mostly quiet and simple anyway, thankfully I don’t need a lot of outside validation and stimulation but yet I understand, appreciate and FEEL how challenging this giant shift is! Reach out ! I’d love to talk, share perspective and a laugh - we do need to all stay connected. . My children are calm, they know resilience - their Dad and I have modeled that for them. They are not anxious, nor angered by the situation, they adjust and adapt......and create. . My sweet Hannah, 13, asked me to teach her to sew. Within one lesson she had it handled. Within one day she made 20 hair scrunchies that she will give to health care workers in thanks for their hard work. Packaged them up with a handmade note and we’ll deliver them carefully and safely. . When I say we all feel this pressure that we need to come out of this better??? Well that’s MY better - just simple tiny gifts - teaching - gratitude - joy - pride - love - resilient and brave children. . To our community and valued clients, This afternoon Premier Jason Kenney declared a public state of emergency in Alberta in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We must support each other and do our part to help slow the spread of this pandemic through our population and families. We will do this while still recognizing our clients' needs. The wind, the sky, and the sea. All of these set my heart free... . Today I turn 46, it’s only a number and yet it seems unfathomable to be those many years! . With gratitude I have adventured to Salt Spring Island. My hippy happy place.... . It’s interesting when you have a chance to reflect and realize your life is far from how you had pictured it to be. That the lessons you need to experience seem foreign. Learning that solitude is different than loneliness, that fear is your best chance at expansion, that love is the best verb you’ll know. My life may be different than I had thought but it’s perfect and purposeful. . Today I have been overwhelmed with loving messages and birthday wishes. Hugs from strangers, a kayak trip, sunflowers and chocolates, treasures found, fresh air breathed in and new friends made. . Grateful for so much, but especially for you. . This is my momma, two years old, it’s 1952. This little girl would grow up to be a profound and deep woman, someone whose kindness and heart would touch so many. She had a big heart, intelligent mind and kind spirit. She saw beauty in people; the best in people; she even saw the beauty in what is damaged and would hold it with tenderness.... She was an empath before that was even a word. She could find the magic in people because she held magic in herself. She practiced gratitude, always expressing how spoiled she was. She knew resilience, dignity and grace. She knew time was not an element. She made it a habit to ensure everyone around her felt their best, knew they were loved and valued and cared for. As I read through her diaries it is no surprise that my siblings and I love our children the way we do. Why we all exude her strength. She showed us every single event in life is an opportunity to choose love. . Today I miss her, celebrate her, cry for her. Today I will honor her by honoring myself.
