IBS MANAGEMENT & THE LOW FODMAP DIET . Fredericton now has a dietitian certified in IBS Management & the Low FODMAP Diet .... . But what is the low FODMAP diet? . . FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. FODMAPs are found in a wide range of foods including fruit, vegetables, breads, cereals, grains, nuts, seeds, dairy products, processed foods & beverages . . A low FODMAP diet was originally developed by the team at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. In a RCT 70% of IBS participants on a low FODMAP diet experienced symptom improvement with symptoms reduced by HALF . . How does the low FODMAP diet help manage symptoms? . . The sensation of pain & discomfort experienced by people with IBS are exaggerated due to disturbances in gut motility &/or heightened gut sensitivity. When the gut is distended by the movement of gas & water it acts as a major sensory stimulus, causing pain & bloating. Secondary changes in gut motility & bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation or a mixture of both can also occur . . It is proposed that a reduction in dietary intake of high FODMAP foods will minimize stretching of the intestinal wall, potentially reducing stimulation of the gut’s nervous system & providing the best chance of reducing symptoms in people with IBS. . . Why work with a Certified Dietitian? . . It is advised that the low FODMAP diet be implemented under the guidance of an experienced DIETITIAN to ensure proper implementation of the diet & avoid problems such as: . Over Restriction Nutritional Inadequacy Inadvertent Inclusion of high FODMAP foods which may lead to suboptimal symptom response & misleading results . . The low FODMAP diet is also NOT a ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL & should be tailored to suit the circumstances of individuals . Want to learn more? . MEAL PREP MONDAY . . Taking advantage of the day off to get back into bigger meal preps. This week I got a little caught up in the produce sales I mean $0.99 cucumbers, $1.99/lbs grapes & broccoli, $2.99 cauliflower...how could I not?? So this week I have the challenge of using up all of this nutritious food, which will be good practice for my meal planning skills AND good for my health .... . This week I did roasted purple cabbage, cauliflower, sweet onion, acorn squash & broccoli with @fieldroast apple sage vegan sausages for lunch. . . For suppers I’m doing tofu with spaghetti squash (two nights) & pairing it with sautéed coleslaw mix and @preschoice Freekeh blend the other nights . . I also have snacks, on snacks, on snacks with my grapes, carrots, cucumber & tomatoes (not to mention mushrooms) so breakfast may just end up including some vegetables this week as well! #alltheveggies . . .
