There are many paths to the top of the mountain. If you try to take them all, you’ll never get there. Choose one. #thisisashtanga #stepbystep #system #tradition #lineage #tested #wisdomstream #method

About the decolonization of yoga. The topic is gaining momentum, which is fantastic - But, beware that it is also often being commodified.

"If we go through a lifetime of yoga practice, if we memorise the Upanishads and can do every conceivable yoga posture, if we are able to hold our breath for 3 hours, and we acquire all kinds of titles as a yoga master, even if we become famous throughout the 3 worlds for our practice of yoga - where is all of this at the end of our life? Its Moon Day tomorrow! I was finally able to get a look at this beauty through my telescope last night Turns out the moon doesn’t actually come out every night. Sometimes its below the horizon (on the other side of the earth) until morning...or at least until way past my bedtime

So, when I found yoga it tapped me into that source of longing. I totally related to BKS Iyengar’s quote, ‘My body is my temple and asanas are my prayers’. So, when I arrived in India I was expecting to find everyone sharing Iyengar’s philosophy. However, as I travelled all over the country by bus and train, I had many conversations and they all left me feeling confused. I remember on one particularly long journey from Bombay to Mysore (as they were known back then), a conve...rsation with some devotees who were travelling to Mysore to visit their Guru at an ashram there. When I told them I was going to India to practice yoga, they said, oh yes, this is very good exercise. I tried, in vain, to convince them that what I was doing wasn’t just exercise, but it was spiritual, but I don’t think I succeeded. This was the prevailing attitude, at least with all the people I met, throughout India. For years I tried to make sense of it. I figured that for those who had their devotion, then their prayers were the traditional kind - done at the temple. It made me think about how my own cultural void had led me to seek something in that asana that perhaps was not there. (excerpt from Mark’s post below) See more
