A former psychiatric nurse, Janice Bannister has worked as a stand-up comedian and taught comedy classes and made presentations about healthy living for two decades. Bannister shares some ideas on how people can stay positive during the COVID-19 crisis. Staying connected, being creative and avoiding around-the-clock news coverage are among her suggestions for folks who are spending lots of time at home. Reporter @howellings and I spent last Wednesday on assignment for the @vancouriernews on our bikes, cycling from Strathcona to English Bay and stopping to chat with people we encountered about the pandemic. Daryl Vachon stood outside Benny’s Market convenience store and deli, cradling a carton of eggs and a container of milk. Janet Benedetti was behind the counter of Benny’s Market serving a steady stream of customers (all who practised social distancing) noting the business had been ‘slammed’. City officials have stressed the need to continue providing services and care to the vulnerable population in the area. Sheldon Crouse, a physiotherapist, was forced to stop practising. He was trying to enjoy the outdoors Andy Livingstone Park while he still could, wondering whether a full lockdown like in Italy and France is coming next. Dennis and Yimei, who are to be married this summer, and wanted photographs taken in advance of their wedding day in case it is cancelled because of the pandemic. Holy Rosary Cathedral was open to parishioners, although a notice posted on the large wooden doors reminded parishioners of the new rules imposed about limiting crowds of people. Friends Callum Orchison and Kyle Hansen, both 17 and attend Burnaby Central high school, sat in English Bay. They wore white face masks, courtesy of Orchison’s family safety supply business. @ Vancouver, British Columbia See more
