But, our current home that we rent is open concept, with quartz countertops, hardwood floors, and an ensuite! I can’t imagine giving those things up! I work with a lot of first time home buyers, and I hear a variation of the above message frequently. Years ago, Jory and I entered the real estate market with a condo. We didn’t have an ensuite, hardwood floors, or quartz countertops. Heck, we didn’t even have a backyard or a front porch. But, we understood the importance of... getting our foot in the door, and a condo was what was available within our budget at the time. I’m sure glad we bought that first condo years ago, because it has helped leverage us, several properties later, to where we are today. Your first home is likely not going to check all of the boxes, and some sacrifices MAY need to be made. But it will be an important stepping stone in getting into your next home, and eventually, your forever home. Make a list and narrow it down to your absolute must haves, and work off of that list. Remember, your first home does not have to be your forever home - it’s truly just a stepping stone and tool to help you get into the competitive real estate market and to eventually work your way up the property ladder.
