Insane Pain in the Brain: Migraine A migraine headache can cause intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of the head. In fact the name migraine is derived from the Greek word ‘hemikrania’ which means pain on one side of the head. Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms referred ...to as a prodrome or aura.. An aura may occur before or during migraine headaches. Auras are nervous system symptoms that are usually visual disturbances, such as seeing various shapes, bright spots or flashes of light. In some cases vision loss is possible or people may even experience speech or language problems. Each of these symptoms usually begins gradually, builds up over several minutes, and then commonly lasts for 20 to 60 minutes. When untreated, a migraine usually lasts from four to 72 hours, and the individual may experience symptoms such as: pain on one side or both sides of their head; throbbing pulsating pain; sensitivity to light, sounds and smells; nausea and vomiting; blurred vision; and light-headedness. The effects of migraine may persist for some days after the main headache has ended; this is called the migraine postdrome. Some people report a sore feeling in the area where the migraine was. Other patients may describe a "hung over" feeling and have head pain, problems with thinking, stomach problems, mood changes, and weakness Certain common ‘triggers’ increase the likelihood of a migraine attack: Hormonal changes in women; certain foods; food additives; alcohol; stress; sensory stimuli (bright lights and unusual smells); changes in wake-sleep patterns; physical factors such as strenuous activity; medications; and the environment such as changes in weather and barometric pressure. Studies on Massage and its effect on migraine are lacking. Some studies do show that massage may not reduce the severity of migraines but can reduce the frequency of headaches. Along with reducing triggers and medication, a well planned massage therapy program can help you to limit the number of headaches you get. It is important to remember that adequate hydration before and after massage therapy is critical as dehydration may make headaches worse. Stay Safe and Healthy!
