Hi friends. Day 2 of #marchmeetthemaker and today it's: Style Realy struggled to narrow down a description of my style and you can tell that from looking at my feed that it's also all over the map. So here's a 30 second look at the kind of prints I make.

Hi friends. I’m joining others for #marchmeetthemaker and Day 1 is: Introduction. For the past 40+ years, I’ve been known as Jer/Jeremy Wat. I’ve loved illustrating for fun for most of those years. After visiting an art store in Toronto and picking up my first linocut gouges I dove right into printmaking. Over the last year and a bit, I’ve been creating as Jer Wat Prints. I took printmaking in high school and learned traditional screen printing but only recently I got in...to carving into rubber and lino blocks. I started with tiny carves to practice and hone in on the art of carving details into stamps and tiny prints. I’ve grown to love it and have found it a cathartic and relaxing way to create prints from ideas that come from every day things that I find fun. My brand is pretty much all over the place when I’m creating prints. They’re usually prints of things I love, stamps for my kids, and ideas that come to me while I commute to work. When I started I wanted to make FUNctional prints like notes for my kids and notes to put in their lunch boxes, to-do lists with an illustration of our house. This year I’m going to work on trying to narrow down my brand and I’m excited to share ‘em with you. There’s lots more prompts coming up this month and I’ll share some of what I’ve learned and what I’m working on along the way. Thanks for reading. Listen to your friends. And pay attention to people who do things better, because I’ve learned SO much from the printmaking community. Officially switched over to oil based inks and waiting for the much recommended Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash to arrive. I love the consistency, the clean up, and the clarity of the details. Stay tuned for a video of this print. Also printed on Awagami Kozo handmade paper. Good golly it’s a sweet medium to print on. Great texture and thin enough to soak up all that ink.

This is my dude, @huronwoodwork. Makes incredible pieces out of wood. Big fan of his work and loved carving this for him during these past few months. Last bit about me for now and the mini tour of my space before I get back to filling my feed with printmaking. Pic 1: I started carving with a gouge that I saw on a lot of printmakers feeds. So I went out and picked up a set of Pfeil gouges. Loved having a sturdy and sharp tool to carve. Then I came across the Flexcut Micro Palm set (@flexcut_tools) and it was a combination of sturdy, sharp, and comfortable tool. The flat edge of the gouge allowed my finger to rest on it ...to get varying pressure on the end and I have been rotating between both sets. All in all the investments have been worth putting my hands to work on reliable tools. Pic 2: The other reliable tools are the brayers and barens from Speedball (@speedball_art ). Im still just starting out so these have been my go-to workhorses. One day maybe Ill get their other baren or invest in other styles. Pic 3: Ive been using mainly Speedballs Speedy Carve rubber blocks because Ive found an easy, reliable workflow to transfer images onto it. Carving has been so cathartic for me and has taken me away from the digital world that Im surrounded by and Im able to set aside time in my mind to focus on other things to fill my tank. I save all my cut offs/end cuts to practice small detailed carving. Im hoping to graduate to lino for a different experience. Next goal: buying/owning a tabletop press for a more consistent impression. Truth time: it hasnt been easy. My perfectionist side doesnt love seeing misprints or smudges or distressed ink impressions. Ive had to convince myself to walk away from tough pieces that werent getting the inking that I hoped. But Im gonna press on and keep at it. Im sure theres more to talk about but Im gonna leave it at this. Holler in the comments or DM me if you have questions. Ok. So this is me. Jer Wat (actually its Jeremy and Ive got a great story of how I got my name if you ever want Story Time). Im a new printmaker and Ive loved every minute of it so far. Ive been an illustrator for a good part of my life but was encouraged by my incredibly pursuasive wife to pursue it a bit more. Running joke between us is that shes been trying to market me for years. So heres an intro to who I am. Im a full-time videographer/editor at a church in Wi...nnipeg, Canada. Im a dad to two hilariously fun kids. Carla, my wife of 12 years is the creative behind @theinkpad. I started drawing when my dad gave me a pen and paper to keep myself busy. I went to college for Graphic Design and have been at it for over 20 years. Yup. Do the math. I started carving/stamp making/printmaking in December 2019 after a trip to an art supply store in Toronto I love hugs, my family/friends, and Back to the Future I once live streamed a birthday dinner with my family on my work Instagram account Alright. Essential printmaking tools (brayers, barens, wooden impression spoon) 6. My workhorses for carving (@flexcut_tools) Micro Palm Set, Pfeil gouges, Speedball linocutters 7. Travel kit (not that Ive needed it lately) 8. My age has gotten me to the point where Im using a magnifying LED lamp for finer carves. 9. Previous prints that Ive had a blast making (also used to cover holes in the wall) 10. Paints/ink and knickknacks 11. Carving station 12. Camera for future filming of projects 13. Inking station 14. Our daughters 8th birthday was today and one of the activities she wanted to do with her friends was to make stamps . They drew. I carved. I definitely underestimated what making 10 mini stamps in an hour would feel like. Oh man, but it was absolutely worth it. #ministampmakers
