You’re just detoxing! Keep at it! We’ve all heard it. Any person who has dared to undertake a highly restrictive weight loss diet (cabbage soup, Keto, juicing, fasting etc) has felt the?starvation side effects. They creep up on you after a couple of hours or days... but when they hit- BOOM. ... These symptoms include but are not limited to: headache fatigue mood swings cravings stomach pain diarrhea constipation And of course hunger In case you needed to hear it- this is absolutely not just your body detoxing. Because you’re not working toxins out of your body- you’re starving it of nutrients... they’re different processes. Also- if eating a piece of toast or a peanut butter cup would end your symptoms... they’re probably more related to malnutrition than toxins. Detox symptoms, really can only be experienced by those who genuinely have a build up of toxins in their body. People that genuinely require detox include those suffering from: -alcoholism -narcotic addiction -poisoning Symptoms of this type of detox, which is a function performed mainly by the liver include: -vomiting -shaking -sweating -seizures -extreme pain -hallucinations -fever And in extreme cases - death. Diet culture co-opted this word years ago to sell their idea that YOUR BODY ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH UNLESS YOU DIET. Lemme tell ya... it wasn’t true then, and it’s not true now. For a symptom to be GENUINELY detox related- it has to come from your liver or kidneys. In the cases of crash diet detox- these symptoms come from your endocrine system, brain and stomach. Therefore by definition... they’re not detox symptoms. Don’t get me wrong- I’d never advocate against drinking more water and eating more fruits and veggies; but if those changes are coupled with extreme restriction and giving you headaches and fatigue... babe you’re starving, not detoxing. So the next time your weight loss diet gives you a severe headache- remember this: My body doesn’t know the difference between dieting and starving, and starving myself is not a health practice.

INTENTIONS MATTER Do you set intentions for yourself? Are you actively attempting to be kinder to your body?... Use this as a frame of reference for setting an intention with your efforts at body positivity. Intend to show your body respect by: eating when you are hungry resting when you are fatigued moving mindfully when possible staying hydrated practicing good hygiene establishing a routine wearing clothes that fit And giving yourself the space to do nothing at all when things begin to seem impossible Use this intention as a guidepost to set you on the path to truly enjoying the body you have RIGHT NOW, instead of focusing on what you think it SHOULD or COULD be. And, as always- be mindful of how you speak about your body: both to yourself and to others. Every word you say and thought you think has power to change your reality and mood- so start experimenting with positive words. I’m not saying you have to look in a mirror and say my body is SUPER sexy and I love it! But try My body is capable and strong and I am so glad to have it. Certainly beats the typical ugh I look disgusting... type talk that you’re usually feeding yourself. Try this for a week and watch the way your confidence levels and appreciation for your body increase. Are you ready to set positive body intentions?

JESSA Holistic 01.12.2020

let’s be honest... are you being too hard on yourself? Did you make a list of resolutions that were basically just a list of corrections for your perceived shortcomings? Are you disappointed in yourself for how you handled 2020?... Did your body become softer? Are you upset about how you stayed slow and quiet during a pandemic? How about you give yourself some credit? The world has gone through an epic and life changing set of situations in the last 12 months- and the fact that you’ve survived is worth BEING JOYFUL about. So instead of looking at how you and your body handled things- perhaps give yourself a little credit for continuing on when things felt impossible. Give yourself a little credit for holding it together, even if you didn’t 100% of the time. Give yourself credit for being able to love, care for and enjoy yourself and your friends and family. You’ve earned the credit.

Green Curry Recipe New Recipe! This one is a fan fave! Back when I cooked weekly meals for people- this was a heavily requested option!... Full disclosure: I know essentially nothing of Thai cuisine and would never claim this to be authentic. I adapted this version from several recipes over time. Here’s the grocery list: -1 White Onion -2 Cloves Garlic -3-5 small white potatoes* -fresh basil (3 TBSP) -fresh cilantro* (3 TBSP) -Curry Powder (1 TBSP) - ginger (1 tsp) - 1 jalapeño - your choice of veggies (I used 3 cups of fresh cauliflower l, 1 cup frozen peas, and 1 red bell pepper) -1 Lime -1 Can Coconut milk - Salt and Pepper to taste -quinoa or rice for serving See my recipe highlight for the full video directions! TIPS *cilantro can be subbed for mint if you hate it *if you’re not into white potatoes, you can sub for sweet *jalapeño can be omitted if you’re not a fan of heat *add 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne in the final steps if you are a fan of heat

... I’m leaving some garbage in 2020, and inviting you to do the same. In 2021 I am setting some intentions for growth, joy and love- and this stuff just ’ .... In 2021 I intend to embrace being more honest, open, and kind to myself and the people in my life. Join me! Let’s make ourselves a priority, rather than putting our needs on the back burner. Let’s move forward together without some of the things that would hold us back. Let’s grow together! This list represents things that no longer FIT me. I’m betting some of them don’t fit you either. What will you decide to leave in 2020?

your incredible body deserves more Your body has carried you from your highest and happiest joys, through your lowest and darkest hours. Your body has quietly persevered in the midst of a global pandemic. Adjusting and adapting accordingly.... Your body allows you to hold your loved ones, pull them into an embrace and enjoy their physical presence. Your body gets hurt and sick- but miraculously it usually heals and presents you with opportunities to move and celebrate. Your body is incredible. Your body is beautiful. Your body holds your spirit, your sparkle, your glow... your YOUness. Don’t let it be a stage for weight loss. This New Year season- let’s embrace and celebrate what our bodies have done- rather than trying to change them to fit a modern ‘ideal’. Commit to treating your body better in every way- including just being grateful for it as it is RIGHT now. You can do so much to be better to your body without focusing on how much it weighs. Drink more water. Move more. Eat more fruit and veg. Sleep longer. Rest... No crash diets, no detoxes, no harmful self-talk. Let your body be more than a stage for weight loss attempts this year.

I’ll Be Off Work For Awhile... As most of my clients and followers know, on Monday I’ll be getting breast reduction surgery. It’s a surgery I’ve wanted for quite some time, and I’m so glad that I’ve been given the opportunity. Of course, taking 6 weeks off work during what would normally have been my busiest time of year is going to bring challenges.... JESSA Holistic 09.08.2020

, ’ Now look, this isn’t for any one specific person- trust that if I had an issue with you, I’d tell you directly. This is for the influencers advising that you should eat the way THEY do. ... Poorly educated personal trainers giving nutrition advice. People you went to high school with giving you skincare product advice in hopes that you’ll buy from them. ANY of your friends promoting a diet or exercise plan when they aren’t trainers or nutritionists/dieticians. This sh*t is HARMFUL. Misinformation can HURT people. How? What if you tell your friend that the Keto diet can help her but she’s got undiagnosed blood sugar control issues and ends up becoming so hypoglycaemic that she ends up hospitalized? What if you recommend BELL PEPPERS instead of bread to someone with undiagnosed colitis and the increase of nightshades causes them to have a colon bleed? What if you tell your friend with acne that XYZ product will really help them, and it burns their skin because they don’t have a sufficient oil barrier due to having fungal acne instead of oil-producing acne? What if you advise someone to do shots of apple cider vinegar for gut health but they have acid reflux and end up burning an ulcer into their esophagus? What if you recommend a workout or movement to someone who cannot handle it and they end up injured? When it comes to health, diet, fitness, supplement, and skincare advice it is SO WISE to just leave the recommendations to the experts. Just because something has worked for you- or for an influencer, doesn’t mean that it’s right for someone else. Sure there are harmless bits of COMMON knowledge advice like drink more water or move more that can’t hurt- but when someone asks for specifics- send them to a professional. All of this to say- if you don’t have the education or experience to back up a recommendation or claim: don’t make it! I see how some of y’all do on my trivia

’ There’s this little idea that lives in some people’s minds that tells us that we have the right to judge women. ___... (Insert gluten, sugar, dairy, meat, etc here.) . !? . ’ . . ? ’ - . ? Let’s not pretend we have never been guilty of one of these thoughts or conversations. Women who compete with one another in everyday life cannot truly be invested in BEING FOR WOMEN. So hear me out: You can see something another woman does, know you’d never do it yourself, and still respect her. You can know that her life choices are not for you. You can still be her friend. You can still support her and wave a good for you! flag for her, even if you are headed in completely the opposite direction in life. Of course there are exceptions. Someone openly praising racism, sexism, or other ideals that will genuinely HURT people- You don’t have to good for her when it comes to that trash. But remember... Being constantly competitive and separating ourselves from other women with judgement, one-upping and cruelty is not how we rise up. That’s how we stay stuck and distracted from the REAL, Important, beautiful gifts and lessons that life can provide. The real beauty lies in saying, Good for her, not for me. So, are you FOR women?

cancellation policy Wondering what the procedure and policy is for cancelling your appointment? Here’s the rub:... 24 hours notice is required for cancellation of your appointment. If you aren’t able to provide that, you could be charged a cancellation fee of $45 at your next visit. Why? When you cancel your visit with short notice- it’s hard for me to fill that spot. That means I won’t make any money for the hour that your service was booked. Generally, I give a 1 time grace for this type of thing. I understand that sometimes you won’t be able to give notice- but in MOST cases, you should know today if you can’t make it in tomorrow. As the holidays approach, it’s so important that we’re all looking out for one another and being as kind as we can. You can easily be kind to me by making sure I have plenty of time to fill your spot if you can’t make it! Nobody in an appointment-driven industry LIKES charging cancellation fees- but sometimes our very livelihoods might depend on it. Thank you all for understanding! And remember: feel good, be fed, glow!

The competition mindset is all-consuming. It starts when we’re young. Who has the most expensive backpack? Who has the nicest clothes? Who’s family took the most exciting March break vacation? Who packed the coolest lunch?... It evolves as we grow. Who had the sexiest Halloween costume? Who holds her liquor the best? Who has the cutest apartment? Who is getting the best grades? Who has the most male admirers? Who has the best body? As adults, you’d think we would move away from this crap. Begin to understand that each woman has something beautiful and unique to offer- rather than engaging in the same competitive behaviours. I see women today competing constantly. Who bounced back fastest from pregnancy? Who’s child is the smartest? Who works out the most? Who eats the cleanest? Who has the most lululemons? Who has the best hair stylist? So hear me now, and hear me well. . I am not interested in your bounce-back, your salary, your calorie intake, your waist size, your vehicle, your kid’s IQ, your post-pregnancy workout regime... I’m not going to compete with it, match it, study it, or be consumed by it. I will celebrate your victories AND my own. I will raise you up when you’re failing. I will show up when you’re struggling. I’ll be honest about my shortcomings ... But I will not be your competition anymore. I’m too busy concentrating on being a better teammate. Will you step away from the competition, too?

. (Trigger warning- body image, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, bullying.) I remember the first time I experienced friendly body shaming. It was at lunch. Sixth grade. A large group of girls sat around me, eating the usual middle school lunch- French fries and chocolate milk. We were all talking about motherhood. What dreams we had about our futures as mothers. I had fun imagining the ways I’d parent my future chi...ld, until: I’m only gonna get pregnant if I KNOW I won’t get stretch marks... A beautiful, popular girl declared loudly to the group. Ugh! Yeah! Saaaame! Stretch marks are disgusting! I sunk deep within myself as if my mind were an endless void of self loathing. . I stared into my French fries, contemplating the new knowledge that my body was disgusting. Not that I’d been a fan of the itchy purple lines before- but the fact that they were SO horrible that my friends would avoid their motherhood dreams if it meant looking like me... That was a new pain. It’s the first time I can remember feeling like my body was ‘less than’. It’s stayed with me for 18 years. Little baby Jess, staring into her fries, biting back tears, knowing that her body would inspire disgust if her friends caught a glimpse of the truth on her arms, thighs, belly and chest. Kids can be cruel, this is known. But the reality is that attitudes about body shapes, sizes and appearances are LEARNED. None of those girls was born hating stretch marks. They earned that hate from their families, peers and a culture that believed perfection was the only option- even during motherhood. I don’t blame those girls for inspiring my eating disorder, I don’t even look back at the conversation with ill feelings toward them. What I do feel, when I look back on that moment, is sorrow for the young woman who sat at that table and decided that her body was wrong. I look back and want to hold that little girl and assure her that she’s good, and stretch marks are NORMAL, and that she needs to continue eating and growing.

Alan Cohen articulated this so beautifully. To deny yourself love... is like dying.... At this point I must’ve died a thousand deaths. It’s not easy to extend love to myself all the time. Not when my body hurts or gets sick. Not when I can’t button my favourite jeans. Not when I am constantly my own worst critic. But this quote. This one right here. Gives me a new perspective. What kind of life am I living if it doesn’t include unconditional self love? What kind of life are you living?

APPLE & SWEET POTATO SOUP recipe post This is a modified @vitamix recipe! It’s is plant-based, grain-free and allergen friendly! * I made it in my blender! Ask me how nervous I was about running a very loud high speed blender for 5 straight minutes.... Hint: very nervous. But, thankfully, the soup turned out magically, and the blender did NOT explode into a hot yellow nightmare. Guess this proves once again that my obsession with my @vitamix is absolutely valid. This soup is a perfect autumn comfort food. We ate it with crusty bread and it was divine. INGREDIENTS 2 apples, quartered. 2 sweet potatoes, washed and cut in half. 3 cloves garlic, peeled 1/2 red onion, sliced 1 carrot, washed 2.5 cups veggie broth salt, pepper and cinnamon to taste STEPS preheat oven to 400 wrap garlic cloves in tin foil with a drizzle of olive oil place sweet potatoes, apples and garlic on a parchment-lined pan and bake in preheated oven for 35 mins while baking, sauté red onion on medium heat until soft combine baked ingredients, onion, and broth in high speed blender, blend on high for 3 mins. at 3 min mark, add the carrot to the blender blend another 2 mins add salt, pepper and cinnamon, then stir with a rubber spatula. pour directly into bowls and enjoy If you don’t have a high speed blender- bake the carrot with the other veggies, and then combine all the ingredients in a large soup pot and bring to a boil. (You may need extra broth) Use an immersion blender to purée the ingredients once softened and boiled. Are you excited for soup season? *not safe for birch pollen allergies due to apples. May not be tolerated by those with IBS due to garlic and onion content. Use discretion. @ Fredericton, New Brunswick

--- Look, this is the opposite of what any MLM company would have you believe. Sharon, next door, the one who sells that miracle fat burning syrup, she KNOWS it would work for you. It worked for HER!... That #influencer you follow with the PERFECT skin- she’s sure that the vitamin C serum she uses (gets paid to use) would make your skin look like hers! And let’s not forget your friend who used lavender essential oil to cure her insomnia. She can sell you a bottle- but it’s cheaper if you sign up to sell them yourself. The reality is- your body is unique. Your skin, weight, hormones, life experiences, DNA, environment... they’re different from everybody else’s. So it’s highly unlikely that just applying someone else’s lifestyle remedy to YOUR life is going to solve your problems. Wellness and your journey to it is going to be a beautiful and probably difficult experience. And it will be YOURS to embrace and discover. So, as lovely as it sounds to just squeeze yourself into someone else’s premade diet plan or skincare routine- don’t. You’ll be denying yourself the real growth opportunity that comes from creating your own path. So be vigilant, my loves. Don’t get diet advice, skincare remedies, or expensive products from people just because they swear it worked for them. Seek your advice from professionals and experts. You deserve your own glow. How are you creating wellness for yourself?

I see you saying no to cake at that birthday party. I see you ordering the side salad. I see you pushing through a workout you hate. . How different would things be if you held your body in love? How different would you feel if you allowed your body to exist as it is, right now, without adjusting or hiding? How different would life be if you ate cake at the parties and french fries at the restaurants, and felt no guilt? How beautiful could things feel if you moved as a celebration of your body- from a place of joy? Hating your body doesn’t change it- but enjoying and embracing it just might. So which one sounds better to you?

- & If you’re like me, you’re never doing just one thing at a time. I’m always listening to music, scrolling, watching TV, or reading while I eat. Lemme tell ya. If you’re looking for self-care and healing with your food relationship: ’ ! ... In order to eat mindfully and really BE FED, we need to remove distraction from the equation. Dedicate your full attention to the food and your body’s response to it. !? Well- if you have any history with disordered eating, negative body image, dieting, or food insecurity- it stands to reason that focusing your full attention on eating a meal is going to bring some discomfort. Maybe it forces you to confront a traumatic food/body relationship. Maybe it causes you to genuinely reflect on the process of eating, when you’d rather not think about it. Maybe it makes you feel gluttonous or greedy or gross. Maybe you start to realize you’re NOT eating enough- or you’re eating too much. You start realizing you’ve been disconnected from the signals and language your body uses to communicate with you. Maybe that hurts. But you know what, babes? That’s self-care. It’s not just bubble baths , dark chocolate and yoga . Self-care is gritty, ugly and dark sometimes. It forces us to confront our trauma and our B.S and really WORK on ourselves. It means slowing down and asking our bodies, Okay- tell me what you need. So I challenge you to eat undistracted. Think you’re up for the growth?

- Okay y’all! I hear you! You’re dying to know how the HECK to get your breakouts under control. Your mask is making your skin angry.... Take a deep breath, boo. I’m here for you! Here are my top 5 tips for reducing and combating mask-related skin concerns: 1.) WASH YOUR MASK Listen. If you’re using a non-medical, reusable mask...And you’re only washing it once or twice a week; you are ASKING for some trouble. Wash your mask by hand daily to reduce the nasty bacterial buildup in the fabric. And don’t use your disposables for more than a day! 2.) QUIT TOUCHING IT! Scratching your nose through your mask, pulling it down, or adjusting it every 5 minutes? This can irritate the skin and rub up against existing breakouts- making them harder to heal and more likely to spread. No touchy! If your mask is uncomfy or itchy- try a different one. This mask thing isn’t going anywhere soon, so find one you can stand. 3.) CHILL THE EFF OUT Yep. You need to calm down, as @taylorswift would say. Your stress levels are DEFS impacting your breakout patterns. Start journaling, running, meditating, or whatever works for you. But don’t do NOTHING and expect things to get better- that never works. 4.) WASH. YOUR. FACE. Wearing a mask all day at work? Do you come home, toss it on your night stand, and then just go about your regular evening routine? STOP! When you get home and wash your hands- wash your face too! You wanna get the gunk off. You’ve been sweating and steaming under there. Clean it up! Use a gentle, quality cleanser with no sodium-lauryl-sulfate. 5.) EXFOLIATE Twice a week, you gotta scrub! You can use my fave #amaze gel by @viva.organics or whatever your favourite exfoliant is! This will help get rid of any built-up nastiness that’s been sitting under your mask and not being taken care of by your typical cleanser. BONUS TIP: come see me for a skincare treatment! I swear, it helps. Have you been having mask-related skin concerns?

Can you afford to hate yourself for the rest of your life? Honestly, wouldn’t it be easier to just try to #embraceyourself as you are right now?... What would happen this week if you decided, right now, that you’d accept and enjoy your body as it is without trying to manipulate it with macros, diets, powders, teas, wraps, and impossibly uncomfortable workouts? Because... And here’s the kicker: ! You might have an exceptionally adapted metabolism that is REALLY good at maintaining weight and set point, or extremely high levels of stress hormones, or other genetic factors influencing your weight and shape. If you knew that your body would NOT change- how would your behaviour toward it change?

, É I was due for another bowl recipe post! This one has perfect end-of-summer vibes with fresh local apples and spiced sausage. (Note: sausage I used was tofurkey Italian, but you can choose your fave!)... (Makes enough for 2-4 servings) 4 sausages 4 cups raw baby spinach 1/4 red onion, chopped 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced 1/2 medium apple, chopped dash of avocado oil 1/4 tsp Chili powder 2 TBSP goat (or other) cheese to garnish - - Cut sausages into thick dollars, chop vegetables. Drizzle a hot pan with a small amount of avocado or olive oil. Add veggies and sausage, except for spinach. Sprinkle veg and sausage mix with Chili powder. Sauté until mushrooms are slightly shrunken and sausage is browned. Add spinach in a thick layer and allow steam from other ingredients to wilt the greens. Remove from heat, stir, and add to a bowl. Top with chopped apples and cheese of your choice. This bowl packs a good amount of protein, fiber and a good serving of greens, plus veg! What is your favourite food to enjoy at the end of the summer?

... Hey! Have we met? Maybe not yet. So let me tell you about me for a sec.... I was born and raised in Halifax, NS, and moved to Fredericton, NB in middle school. I’m a maritimer through and through. I struggled with binge eating disorder from the time I was about 12 until very recently. Recovery of disordered eating is a constant work-in-progress, and my struggle has made me empathetic to the struggles that others might face in this area. My career began in esthetics- mainly makeup and facial skincare. But I always had a desire to work with my clients on a deeper level and bring them more usable results. Now, at 30 years old, I’m a Holistic Nutritionist (aka Nutrition Counsellor, aka Natural nutrition practitioner)- which essentially means that I approach nutrition therapies from a whole-body perspective. Working with me, you can expect a lot of mental health homework, self care advice, movement, breathing and holistic therapies along with the standard here’s what you should eat approach that a dietician might use. I love my work, and my clients, and believe strongly that EVERY BODY, regardless of size, shape, colour, or gender expression - deserves the same level respect and genuine care from their chosen health professional. I’d love to work with you! What’s your favourite part about your job?

If you’re having chronic pain, skin issues, headaches, digestion trouble, or are just feeling straight-up - there’s a good chance you’re not drinking enough water! The average adult requires about 2L (64 oz) of fluids daily in order to function optimally. This is where the classic comes from.... However! If you don’t feel like you’re , you might need more! My advice? Shoot for 3L. Get yourself a 2L bottle and stick it in the fridge. Pour from it all day until empty- then fill it again and aim to get AS MUCH of that one down as you can. Your whole body CRAVES hydration. Help it out, would ya? Do you have any tips for getting your water in? Is this a struggle you have?

Figured I’d get real with y’all for this post. No filters, no food talk, no bs. Just you and me and a minute of real talk about my journey with fitness.... I thought of myself as a person capable of fitness. For a long time it was just something I’d come to accept about myself. I could sing, I could write, I could cook- but athletics were not my thing, and never would be. I felt defeated by every athletic endeavour I undertook. I ran (tried) cross country in middle school and came pretty nearly dead last every time. I avoided gym classes. I opted out of team sports. Dancing I liked. But I was fairly stubborn and uncoordinated- so following teacher choreography was a struggle. So I just resigned myself to checking ‘no’ on that box for the rest of my life. Then, one day- I decided to change the narrative. . I signed up to join a gym- and walked or bussed there 3-5 times a week. I started lifting heavy things. I started pushing my limits. I grunted, pushed, pulled, pressed, planked and squatted my way to LOVING this activity. . Weight lifting and strength training were a whole new world for me. A place where I didn’t have to be fast or coordinated with a beat. I didn’t need to rely on support from team members or worry about letting them down. Where the goal wasn’t to outperform someone else- I just had to push through my own bulls**t. And boy oh boy- was my bulls**t holding me back. I AM strong. I can check yes on that box. I am capable of movement and fitness and athleticism that I never thought possible. So I guess what I’m trying to say is this: Don’t let your own limiting narrative and negative thoughts about yourself prevent you from FINDING your fitness. It’s out there. Your body wants to move- you just have to find the movement that lights you up. What is your favourite way to move your body?

FEAR FOODS/RESTRICTED FOODS A lot of us have foods on a no list for various reasons. I don’t eat sugar.... No chips in the house. I don’t eat potatoes- too many carbs. And then later- when presented with an unsupervised opportunity to consume these foods, what happens? We binge. We eat a whole bag of chips, or 10 cookies, or an XL fries from the drive through. BUT WHY? Here’s an activity to show how restriction impacts your brain activity. For the next 30 seconds I want you to NOT think about puppies. Ok GO! How did you do? Probably pretty bad. When we instruct our bodies to go against our natural instincts (like eating a cookie or a handful of chips)- we create a sort of thought pattern confusion. Just like trying NOT to think about puppies- trying NOT to eat a cookie is harder than just having a cookie and moving on. So what do we do? Well, we need to give ourselves permission to eat. It’s tough, but it’s the only way to end a binge pattern. Permission to eat a cookie. Permission to eat chips. Permission to eat potatoes. When we no longer restrict- the food in question no longer takes up the mind space that has us thinking about it all the time. Try this next time you’re presented with a cookie, piece of cake, dessert, etc. You’ll be surprised how much LESS you want to eat your fear foods when you no longer fear them.

AUTUMN IS COMING Some of you aren’t as excited as I am about it. I’ve already busted out the chai, planned my chunky scarf and cardigan combos, and ordered my AUTUMN SKINCARE. Did you know that your skin has different needs as the seasons change? The light, airy moisturizer and astringent cleanser you used in the summer probably won’t help achieve the same results when the cooler, dryer autumn season begins.... Autumn dries things out and cools them down- meaning we definitely need to focus on heavier, warming skincare. The same goes for our nutritional needs too! Your skin gets nurtured from the inside out! By choosing heavier, spicier, more warming food options- you can give your whole body a GLOW BOOST and really wow yourself with how incredible your skin looks (plus you’ll feel amazing). Not sure where to start? Skincare got you down? DM to book a full skincare and nutrition consult including a seasonal skin treatment!

Dieting Got You Down? Dieting is a LOSING game. And I don’t mean losing weight.... I mean losing time, money, effort, joy... For what? At best- temporary weight loss. You can be free from it all if you want. You can reconnect with your body, re-learn your hunger and fullness signals, eat mindfully and nourish yourself. You can STOP dieting. But what about my weight? Listen. When my clients really dedicate themselves to the hard work of listening to their innermost selves and their bodies- weight loss does come eventually. How? By reducing STRESS, by eating when they’re hungry, by avoiding foods that make them feel like crap. But it’s WORK. It’s not HARDER than dieting forever and being disappointed by the results- but it’s still work. And it’s still hard. But it’s doable. There’s a light at the end of that diet tunnel. Let me show you how to find it! DM to book today.

The media loves a weight loss story... I, like most of you, was shocked and saddened by news of Chadwick Boseman’s death. Though I’d never have called myself a true fan of his, and really didn’t even know much about his body of work- I still appreciated what I knew of him. I still felt the pangs of loss, not for me- but for a BIPOC community already in such acute despair. ... I think, for me- and for other like-minded individuals there is a lot that could be said about the man’s death. But I want to draw your attention to one specific thing. For months- media outlets had been speculating,(and making money doing so), about Boseman’s weight. What’s his weight loss secret? Was it for a role? How did he drop weight so fast? Why did he drop weight so fast? While his FANS were concerned- the media went to work doing what they do best. Speculating and making his weight into a story. A few months ago I got criticized in my DMs for chastising those who made similar speculations about Adele and her dramatic weight loss. The truth is- this obsession with the body weight, shape, and size of celebrities is unhealthy and distracting. Many celebrities are told not to disclose health concerns as it may damage their image or ability to get work in the future. So- when they are terribly sick we may never know. Or, as we learned in this tragic case- we don’t know until they’ve died. I’m not seeking to profit or gain praise from Boseman’s death. I have no motive in creating this post other than spreading awareness of a very real and menacing feature of diet culture and weight obsession. The only shame I seek to pass is on the media that continues to make weight and body stories newsworthy in a world where there is SO MUCH MORE going on. During my search I found numerous ads for weight loss supplements attached to this story. It’s nauseating. It’s diet culture clinging to every inch of our screens. It has got to stop. The only body that is any of your business is your own. Leave the praise for and obsession with someone else’s body size behind- and focus your attention on appreciating them. You have better things to talk about, and they have SO MUCH MORE to offer.

BEACH TRASH Beaches are one of my favourite places on earth. Not just because they’ve got vacation vibes- but because they grant us access to one of the most incredible gifts the earth has to offer- the ocean As humans, we forget our link to the ocean sometimes.... The big ol’ blue is vital to the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the climate we enjoy. Without the ocean and all of the critters and flora within- we would cease to thrive. Which is why I collect netting and ropes when I visit a beach. This big handful took less than 5 minutes to grab from my surroundings, and I was able to prevent this litter from ending up in the belly of a whale . Next time you’re at the beach- grab some rope, plastic, netting, and whatever other trash you find. It’s not hard to be kind to the environment- and she is so very kind to us. What is your fave little way to help the planet?

I LOVE curry night! The spices, the smells, the heat, the FLAVOURS! Dannnng, folx. Curry is where it’s at! ... This dish, known as ‘aloo gobi’ (aka potato cauliflower), originated in the Indian Subcontinent. Now, look - my little homemade, quickie version has got NOTHING on an authentic aloo gobi simmered with expertise by someone who learned it as a generational hand-me-down dish. But it tastes good, and I’m excited about it! I paired mine with quinoa (not at all traditional) to get some additional amino acids. Warming, spicy bowls like this one have me looking happily toward fall soup/casserole season. What’s your favourite type of curry!?

Please share! Help save the bees! TLDR; if you see a bee that looks like this with a rusty coloured spot on the abdomen- do not kill it. Also don’t kill bees in general if they’re not bothering you. Today @willdujour and I decided to get pizza for supper. We essentially had to climb over a group of young teenagers clustered outside and loitering- to enter the take out spot and grab our pizza to go.... When we left, we noticed a rusty-patched bumble bee on the ground! This specific species of bee was recently classified as endangered, and scientists studying the bee have asked those that find one to snap a picture and send it in with the location it was seen. Will grabbed his phone while I explained to two of the teens crowded around that this particular bee was endangered and being studied. Before Will had a chance to snap a pic- another teen came over and STOMPED THE BEE TO DEATH. Now- maybe I’m just a bleeding heart hippie, and maybe y’all don’t care about bees like I do. But I left the parking lot with tears in my eyes. So- I guess what I’m saying is... if you have toddlers, kids or teens- now is the time to educate them on the importance of bees and how their existence keeps us alive and able to eat incredible food. Plus- they’re alive. They don’t want to be stomped to death. If you spot a rusty patched bumble bee in your area- snap a picture and send it here: https://www.bumblebeewatch.org/ Together we can help these little dudes.

-- I get asked a lot by clients how to build a balanced breakfast that will be satisfying and delicious while still being mostly plants. The simplest way? Start with some fruit or veg and nuts, and build from there.... That’s what I did today with this super-satisfying cinnamon-banana-berry oatmeal bowl. We had a perfectly ready banana on the counter, and some beautiful berries in the fridge- plus I’ve been really into cinnamon lately. So, I figured @bobsredmill gluten-free oats topped with those fruits and a couple of pecans for some added Magnesium, zinc and selenium would be perfect. Drizzle with a bit of maple syrup and you’ve got yourself a gorgeous breakfast bowl that will keep you full and energized all day! How do you build your breakfast?

Grief This was a running theme in my day. People close to me experiencing loss. Powerful women sobbing. Sorrow and pain for the loss of an idea they had of what their future might look like. ... The thing about grief is that it absolutely demands to be felt. There is no off switch. And while you’re deep into those feelings- you might start to believe some things about yourself that are absolutely not true. You WILL rise again. You DO deserve joy. You CAN overcome. Today I went pretty classic with some @maison_riviera raspberry black currant coconut yogurt, some @dorsetcerealsaustralia granola, banana and blueberries. ... Verdict? The yogurt is BY FAR the best dairy-free I’ve ever had- and I’ve tried TONS. It’s velvety and tart just like you’d expect from classic yogurts. EVER USE A FITNESS APP? Ever had a fitness app tell you that you need to eat 1200 calories to meet your goals? Here’s the rub. You need more than 1200 calories just to perform your basic body functions properly. I’m talking about the things your body does without you even moving from your bed.... And okay, look- some days you’re really sick and you can’t eat- and that’s okay. But on the days when you can, 1200 calories ain’t gonna cut it. TODDLERS (ages 2-4) have a recommended calorie intake of 1,000-1,400 Soooo unless you’re thinking that your body requires the same nutrition as a 30lb baby... you’re probably a little misguided in your calorie intake. The Minnesota Starvation experiment, conducted in the 1940s to measure human reaction to starvation-level calorie depletion, fed their test subjects (adult men) 1,560 calories a day. Hi, hello, yes. You read that correctly. 1560 calories. On a STARVATION STUDY DIET. Conclusion: If your diet/fitness program recommends you eat less than people did during a STARVATION STUDY- you should probably ditch it. If it recommends you should eat toddler level calories... you should probably ditch it. If it recommends you count your calories at all... I mean... probably just ditch this crappy restrictive dieting forever! See more

Chronic Illness and ACEs. trigger warning- child abuse, neglect, substance abuse, mental health, addictions Did you know that ACEs or Adverse Childhood Experiences have been linked to chronic illness? More than 1,500 studies to date have linked the two. Adults who’ve had adverse experiences as children have been proven to show greater biological damage to important cellular structures which predisposes them to a range of diseases.... Diseases linked to difficult childhood experiences: Lupus, fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, thyroid conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome, and so many more. Your body’s pain doesn’t have to be permanent, though. Thankfully there are helpful practices and holistic methods that can assist in healing the damage and lead people out of their chronic disease cycle. Food can be an important part of this- and I am always happy to work with clients struggling with chronic illness and help lead them out of their suffering. Unsure of where you fall when it comes to ACEs? Google the ACE test to find out. A score of 3 or more is high.

TW: disordered eating. Most of us have used self-deprecating comments to describe our bodies, eating habits, cravings, etc. We say things like... ugh my hips do not need this donut I am having a fat day. I’m probably gonna get diabetes. I have a carb addiction. So bad. Or any combo of the above. It’s seemingly innocent. Surely it doesn’t hurt anybody. Wellllll it’s not quite that simple. First of all- your psyche hears everything you say. After awhile the self deprecation becomes less of a funny joke, and more a series of toxic ideas that you have about your body and about food. Additionally- every person around you is on their own journey with food. The girl quietly munching carrot sticks in the corner of the staff room- the one with bigger thighs than you- hears you calling YOUR thighs fat and plunges deeper into her own disordered patterns. The child in line behind you at the grocery store hears you use the word diabetes like it’s the worst thing that can happen, and they’ve just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. If you’re trying to be compassionate and to impact the lives of others in a positive way- commit to using only positive language about food and bodies. All food. All bodies. Even your own.

Constant bloating, gut pains, breakouts, headaches, nausea, digestive upset, and chronic pain do not have to be a part of your daily life. Food has incredible power to influence how we feel. Shocking, right? Now, look. I’m sure SOME of you are living in a reality where you look in the mirror and actively love what you see. This post isn’t FOR you folx. This post is for my negative self-talk junkies. The ones who mentally trash talk themselves every time they catch a glimpse in the mirror. Maybe you never say it out loud (but you probably do).... Here’s the thing tho... It’s not going to change your body. Your body will not magically shrink because you hate it. Your love handles and thick thighs will still be there the next time you look in the mirror. Don’t you think it makes more sense to try and AT LEAST give your body a bit of grace? Change up your self talk? Instead of going through a mental checklist of dislikes every time you look in the mirror- try searching for ONE thing you can appreciate. Your thick thighs have supported your frame and allowed you movement through your life. Your soft belly holds food and turns ingredients into nourishment and energy so you can go about your daily life. Talking sh*t about yourself TO yourself is never going to result in something positive. Ditch the trash talk and start giving out grace. See more
