80km trail relay race with @riversedgeultra in the books! I was one of the 19km runners with such a wonderful team! Way to kick ass guys! It was such a great event and incredible to run along side so many amazing runners! Got to spend the day with long time friends and cheering each other on. It was absolutely mind blowing watching the athletes that were running 100km and 50km solos and to watch them cross the finish line! TRIGGER POINT THERAPY What is a trigger point? Trigger points, are hyperirritable spots in the skeletal muscle, associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness, referred pain, or local twitch response. Most clients describe feeling a pain that radiates from these spots but typically is not directly on the area that pressure is being applied. For instance there is a typical trigger point near the s...houlder blade that radiates to behind the ear. When this happens I hold pressure and wait till my client feels that it has dissipated. There are many theories as to how trigger points arise and why they produce specific patterns of referred pain. Activation of trigger points may be caused by a number of factors, including acute or chronic muscle overload, activation by other trigger points, imbalances and many other factors. A successful treatment protocol relies on identifying trigger points, resolving them and, if all trigger points have been deactivated, elongating the structures affected along their natural range of motion and length. Which is why I will perform passive stretches with my clients post treatment or send them home with stretches to help elongate the muscle fibres along with range of motion of the affected area. Treating surrounding fascia is also extremely important to decrease the re development of the deactivated trigger points. I find trigger points fascinating and am constantly trying to advance my knowledge both physically with my clients and mentally through research! Also happy September everyone! E X E R C I S E: Learn to embrace the uncomfortable moments and push through. N U T R I T I O N: Nourish your body with foods that are fuel. Sleep, exercise and nutrition are pivotal if you're serious about success and health. I know these are obvious things, but we think health is complicated and we have to get a quick fix and loose weight as fast as possible and have all the caffeine and get as little sleep as possible and have our bodies survive on as little of the fundamentals as we can to be successful. WRONG, our bodies will not sustain this. We need sleep, movement and nourishing foods to perform at the highest level! Again, how you do anything is how you do everything. 7km trial run on this gorgeous day! Plus 30 today, it was sweaty, hot but perfect! I havent ran in over a month and I felt amazing! Trail running is no joke, it is way different than running on a paved path, mentally and physically. I gave myself permission to walk when I felt I should, pushed myself up tough hills and took in the brilliant view! Resistance is necessary to bring out our best! Happy Saturday guys! What is ONE habit that you refuse to budge on?? We all have habits, bad and good! Things that shape our day, routines that we have put in place to help us navigate our day in a productive way, hopefully!! Ive worked really hard, especially during quarantine to cultivate habits that help me to have better time management and not be overwhelmed and indecisive. Also choosing one thing at a time; this can be the real catalyst to change! So I used to... write a list of about 20 things every day that I wanted to get done, some small, some very extravagant and then Id maybe cross a few off then feel discouraged that I didnt get more done in a day. NOOOO, choose 3 things, 3 things a day that you absolutely have to get done that are on the top of your priority list. This helps you callus your mind to cultivate these habits, strategically choosing 3 tasks that need to be done. The feeling of crossing things off a list is so incredibly gratifying. I started putting cold shower on the top of my list, I really enjoying writing and journaling so every night I write 3 things down before I go to bed, cold shower being one of them, first thing in the morning I look at it and Ill be damned if I dont get that crossed off! Making my bed has also become one of e first things I do in the morning, having a made bed just somehow makes me feel like I have my life just a little bit more together!! What ever it takes right, little by little!! So what is ONE thing that you want to implement into your day that you dont want to budge on? Cold shower? Reading or some kind of self care? Meditation? Workout? Be more and never look back!! Happy Global Running Day I absolutely love running, I always have. All the sports I played growing up involved lots of it; basketball, rugby, track are just a few. Long distance has always been my game and this year I have a goal of running a half marathon and I am so excited to get there. Healthy, mobile joints are the foundation for functional fitness. Flexibility & mobility are two key components when it comes to moving well. Whether were striving for optimum athletic performance, or simply looking for freedom of movement in everyday life. To maximize our performance potential, we need to have adequate ranges of motion, strength through our ranges and maximum control of our individual joints. Only then we can function well, produce smooth coordinated motion... and distribute forces evenly throughout the body. I think Tony Gentilcore, Co-Founder of Cressey Sports Performance, put it most succinctly: * Mobility: how a joint moves * Flexibility: length of a muscle Flexibility is the ability of your joints to move through their full range of motion without pain or stiffness. It also refers to the pliability of the muscles that support the joints. Flexible muscles and tendons allow for greater range of motion during activities. Essentially, think of mobility as an umbrella covering a range of factors that may affect the range of motion around a joint. One of these components is flexibility its difficult to move a joint if the connected muscles around it doesnt stretch far enough to allow it. But there are other considerations that come into play as well, like not having the strength to perform the exercises, soft tissue damage (e.g. inflamed tendons), and even problems with other joints in the same chain of movement. So while an adequately stretched muscle may, in theory, be conducive to a greater range of movement around a joint, its basically useless if your mobility is constricted by other factors. If you have a general mobility problem that affects how you move, your body isnt going to be functioning in the way its supposed to. Common problem areas are the hips, shoulders, knees and upper back. Today was a little mentally challenging. Day started off great, up early and ready to get my run in this morning. My goal, 10km today, I was super exited. Within my first kilometre I had shooting pains along the inner edges of both my shine bones (tibia).... and I knew right there... I had Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome). I had been feeling this pain slightly when running lately and have been trying my best to be careful and have a stretch routine in place, scrap...ping and being mindful of it, sometimes your body has other plans. Want to know the best treatment for shine splints.... REST!!! Not an easy thing to do sometimes, but especially when it is an over use syndrome, rest is a must! So as much as I wanted to push myself today, I knew exactly what I had to do; I turned around and walked back home, tried to run again thinking this seriously cant be happening to limping my way home. When your body is giving you sings it is so important to listen to them, acknowledge them and figure out what the best way to approach it. I got home, I used my @sidekicktool muscle scrapper (lifesaver), stretched and then iced. So just like I would do with my clients, I sat down and wrote out a treatment plan. I will not let this slow down my work out routine at all, I will build around it. I absolutely love running, the bike is my next choice, so that will be my means of cardio. Sometimes these things gives us opportunity to switch things up a bit, I truly feel like it allows us to reevaluate and restructure. I was not going to allow this to negativity impact my day or my workouts. I find the human body truly fascinating, I look forward to updating you guys on how my treatment plan goes. Happy Tuesday Everyone!! Hoping everyone is still going strong during this time and finding the strength, mentally and physically to keep working on your goals and being creative with home workouts, self massage, physically therapy and other home treatments because your body still needs that relief. One way of keeping up with regular maintenance of your body and its needs is stuff that we have talked about before, stretching, moving your body and strengthening exercises. I g...et asked a lot how I keep my muscles healthy and from getting tight from work and my work outs (weights and running) and I have to say @sidekicktool is one of the biggest contributors to that. I have been using there products for a few years now, I have a scraper and the Fuse (pictured here) in my gym bag at all times. I use the Swerve on a daily basis for my arms (especially forearms after work) and upper traps because that is one of my problem areas (tight upper traps and neck area can be the cause of a lot more issues than we may think). I use the bow scraper on my quads, hamstrings and IT bands after leg work outs and after running, this has been a life saver, where my tight IT band people at!!! To my people that dont have access to a gym that use that as your outlet and for your mental health; try remembering that mobility is huge too. Do your home work outs, make a plan, write your work out down. Get mobile, look up a yoga routine on YouTube, look up range of motion of different parts of the body, stretch, foam roll. Take this as an oppor...tunity to get your body into better condition for when you get to go back to the gym. I know a lot of people that have a hard time with yoga and think its too slow or you wont sweat, let me tell you guys, you can find amazing online sequences that allow you to move through quicker than anticipated and break out a sweat. Getting your body moving and getting those endorphins flowing is huge right now. Use your tools; foam rollers, muscle scrapers (@sidekicktool) and other tools you may have that you usually use, this is such a perfect time to do self care on those tight muscles that wont go away. PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME: The piriformis muscle is a small muscle located deep in the glutes (buttocks), behind the gluteus maximus. It connects the spine to the top of the femur and allows incredible flexibility in the hip region (its the main muscle that allows for outward movement of the hip, upper leg and foot from the body). Functions of the piriformis muscle: The piriformis restrains rapid internal rotation of hip (occurs when running) Externally rotates the femur wh...en the hip is neutral or extended Horizontally abducts the thigh when the hip is flexed to 90 drifters This syndrome is uncommon cause of pain and other symptoms in the buttocks and/or lower back that can radiate down the leg to the foot. The causes for piriformis syndrome are related to the location of the sciatic nerve in relation to the piriformis muscle; the sciatic nerve passes out of the pelvis by four routes. Spasm or swelling of the piriformis muscle can cause signs and symptoms due to pressure placed on the various areas of the sciatic nerve that are adjacent to the muscle. Some causes are over use, prolonged compression, trigger points in piriformis, postural concerns and more. SO EXCITED TO FINALLY TELL EVERYONE...... IM BACK!!!! Calgary was exactly what I needed, it was perfect and I am so grateful for my time spent there and the people that I will miss dearly but can call true friends.
