Motivation is NOT a Feeling... it is an ACTION Have you ever thought to yourself: I’ll start my joint friendly diet after Easterafter May long weekendafter July 1st or July 4thor summer holidaysor cousin Julie’s weddingor after (insert any occasion that typically involves lots of yummy food and drinks)?... If the answer is, yes, you are not alone, my friend. You are 100% normal and human! Part of being human is that we are wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain, and we naturally resist changes that are uncomfortable even if those changes are good for us. I talk to lovely people everyday who are suffering from arthritis, who want to feel better so badly, but they are afraid of making the changes necessary to get there. They tell me that they don’t have any willpower or that it’s hard for them to stay motivated to stick to changes over the long term. Again, this is soooo normal! The truth iswillpower doesn’t last and motivation needs to be cultivated. Motivation is NOT a feeling, it is an ACTION. I’m sure we have all experienced the excitement of starting something new like a fitness program, working towards a university degree, skilled trade, or a professional certification. It’s easy to work at it at firstuntil we run into challenges that make it harder to stay the course. This is when motivation has to move from just being a feeling into an action. Motivation is about remembering WHY we want to achieve our goal in the first place. Motivation is about staying committed to our goal and showing up for ourselves even when we don’t want to that includes dusting ourselves off and starting again when we’ve diverted from our plan. This is why I created the Anti-Arthritis Method program because making changes to address our joint health can be daunting and challenging. Having professional and peer support is just as important as having the correct diet and supplements (which we provide for you as well). We’ve taken out all the guesswork for you. My past thinking when it came to my health and managing my arthritis really held me back. Once I knew what I had to do in order to get rid of my joint pain at its source, and for the long term, I was reluctant to make changes in my life. The ironic part was that my diet and lifestyle choices were largely contributing to holding me back, and ‘forcing’ me to miss out on the life I truly wanted. It took hitting my rock bottom (which was not being able to walk without crutches) to start wrapping my head around the responsibility I had, to make the necessary changes to repair my health - I couldn’t rely on medication alone. What I learned about my reluctance to change, is that the brain is wired for survival, and it is motivated to seek pleasure, conserve energy, and to avoid pain - even when it’s to our detriment. Our brain tricks us into thinking we’re in danger when we are uncomfortable and trying something new... So, that’s why it’s always easiest to just revert to eating the potato chips, going through the Micky D’s drive through, and drinking syrupy-sweet mocha coco loco frappes, instead of processing our uncomfortable feelings, and dealing with our stressors. Butultimately this keeps us stuck and stagnant, and prevents us from growing (and improving our health!). I wasn’t aware of this back then. I learned that the key to getting ‘un-stuck’ was to just start with one thing I needed to do to improve my health - and trust that I was on the right path... despite that little voice in the back of my brain telling me to revert back to what I’d always done. THE #1 FACTOR FOR LOSING YOUR JOINT PAIN When I chat with autoimmune arthritis sufferers, I get asked all kinds of questions-- what supplements should I take? Should I exercise or not? I have fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue/Crohn’s disease/(insert other autoimmune condition here), can you still help me? Can I/should I stop taking my medications? Is there anything I can do to get rid of my pain besides taking medications and avoiding junk food and sugar? All of these questions ar...e important and I can answer them all for you, but the #1 most important factor to address when you have arthritis and/or another autoimmune condition, is your diet. Now, I know the word, diet has a negative connotation, but it simply refers to the food we consume (including what we drink). While other factors such as supplements and exercise are important for getting rid of joint pain, without using diet as the # 1 tool to address joint pain, you will never reach the level of health you desire. It sounds so simple and yet is very difficult for most to follow through on. And yes, I know that’s a bold claim, but it doesn’t make it any less true, though. THE # 1 FACTOR FOR LOSING YOUR JOINT PAIN STARTS WITH DIET - and that diet is referred to as the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) In the AIP, all foods that can create inflammation or an autoimmune response are eliminated for a period of time, with a gradual re-introduction of nutrient-rich foods that were previously eliminated. This is necessary to allow the immune system to rest, instead of constantly trying to protect us from ‘foreign’ matter that has leaked through a damaged intestinal lining. You see, over time, those of us with autoimmune conditions have developed what is known as intestinal permeability or ‘leaky gut’. I won’t get into the details here about how leaky gut develops (that’s for another day), but basically, it’s what’s responsible for the autoimmune responses we are experiencing - hello joint pain and stiffness. Here’s the thing, though...I know that changing our diet can be challenging. There’s the questions of: where to start, what to eat, what not to eat, where to find new recipes, planning ahead for meal prep, and how to handle social situations, special occasions, and stressful days, etc. I get it.
