Pain is often misunderstood, especially when it becomes chronic. This is a nice little article summarizing a few pieces of what the current research tells us about pain.

Monday is bike ride day. That’s what’s in my calendar. That’s what I do every week. I woke up Monday morning this week and didn’t feel like going for a bike ride. Was I being lazy? Unmotivated? So I asked myself a simple question. . . What does my body need right now? .... . To clarify, I didn’t ask my body what it wanted. I asked it what it NEEDED. Big difference. . . When I listened, I heard rest, recovery, recuperation following a very active weekend. So I skipped my bike ride and chose a morning yoga session in the living room sunshine instead. . . Wants can skew what our body truly needs with what is familiar, habitual, easy, or driven by external pressure, whether related to our diet, exercise or mental health practices. Craving sugar? Want a beer? Dragging yourself out for that run? I challenge you to pause and ask yourself, is this what my body really needs right now? . . And if you have no idea what your body needs but know it’s not what you are currently giving it, it’s probably time for a check-in with a healthcare professional, whether your Physio, Naturopath, or exercise specialist. . . . . #wellness #health #yoga #bike #run #body #pain #chronicpain #habits #nutrition #diet #exercise #movement #wants #needs #physiotherapy #naturopathicmedicine #sunshine #vancouver #YVR #vancity #bewell #physicalhealth #mentalhealth #samesame See more

What is IMS? IMS stands for Intramuscular Stimulation. Simply put, it is a technique using an acupuncture needle to release taut bands of muscle. GUNN IMS was designed as an assessment and treatment approach for the management of chronic pain. It can be used to treat conditions such as disc bulges/herniations, sciatica pain, tendon issues (ie. tennis elbow, Achilles tendonosis) and many other chronic pain conditions. . . Common IMS myths that I often have to debunk in my pra...ctice: ~ I hook you up to electricity [Electricity can be passed through acupuncture needles, but we call this "electroacupuncture"] ~ The needles are bigger and thicker than acupuncture needles [Same needles, I promise!] ~ It's very painful to have done [Well, it's not necessarily comfortable. It often feels twitchy, grabby, achy and crampy - this can be intense, but a practitioner can take it slow and make sure you feel like the treatment is manageable for you. Most clients don't love the feeling of the treatment, but they love how they feel afterwards] . . What's been your experience with IMS? . . . . #IMS #intramuscularstimulation #chronicpain #pain #physiotherapy @ FIT TO TRAIN

Morning workout. . . A couple weeks ago, I decided to spend less time in the gym and more time in the trees. This is now the site of 3 of my weekly workouts. Let me also say, I HATE running, and yet here I am, running. .... . I used to road run 10K’s. I can’t say I ever really enjoyed it but I liked the level of fitness it gave me. A decade later, I joke with my high level running clients how terrible I am at running. Those who can’t, treat, I suppose? . . One shouldn’t hate to exercise. We should be grateful if we have the ability to move. We should be grateful if we can take steps to optimize our health. Find an activity that makes you feel good and do that. . . Turns out if you put me in a forest with my dog at my side, running isn’t such a heinous act. I’m starting slow (as my Physio brain tells me) so we’ll see where this little adventure takes me. . . Fun fact: Exercising in forests or even sitting looking at trees reduce blood pressure, as well as the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline. . . . . #run #trailrun #running #trails #vancouver #vancity #fittotrain #fitfam #fitdog #morningrun #trees #nature #happyplace #whenisayrunireallymeanjog #cortisol #adrenaline See more

1 in 5 Canadians live in chronic pain. Pain is common. Pain is hard. Pain is life-changing. So what more can we do? Take this course! . . I’ve been spending the last couple weeks making my way through Pain BC’s, The Pain Foundations Course Series. I highly recommend this to all my colleagues and other healthcare practitioners who work with clients in pain. It’s free but incredibly valuable. It’s a great refresher and provides up-to-date research on pain physiology and the b...iopsychosocial approach to managing chronic pain, plus a whole lot more. . .
