Today JIBC marks Orange Shirt Day to acknowledge the impact of the residential school system on generations of Indigenous children in Canada. We observe the occasion in the spirit of reconciliation and hope, affirming Every Child Matters. Sept. 30 is a reminder of the time of year when Indigenous children were sent to residential schools. The symbol of the orange shirt stems from the story of Phyllis Jack Webstad, whose beloved orange shirt was taken away from her upon her arrival at age six on the first day at residential school.
