If you are having trouble convincing your kids to go to the dentist, trick them by telling them you are going to go get ice cream. This will errode their trust, but teach them a valuable life lesson.

A little something to make you smile :A little boy was taken to the dentist. It was discovered that he had a cavity that would have to be filled. "Now, young man," asked the dentist, "what kind of filling would you like for that tooth?" "Chocolate, please," replied the youngster.

Dental heath prevention tips for kids use only a pea sized portion of fluoride toothpaste for children over 3 years of age and a smear for those under 3 to minimize swallowing brush with a soft toothbrush and fluoride containing toothpaste twice a day visit your dentist regularly the first visit should be within 6 months of when you see the 1st tooth or at one year of age. teach your children about the benefits of flossing around the age of 7... eat a healthy diet and limit candy and other sweets. Food such as cheese, nuts, carrot and celery sticks, fresh fruit or plain yogurt are all good examples. replace your childs toothbrush every 3 months More about fluoride Fluoride is beneficial even before your child's teeth begin to erupt. It strengthens the tooth enamel as the teeth are forming. While some municipal water supplies contain fluoride, the vast majority of BC communities do not. To find out whether your water contains fluoride, call your local water district. Use fluoride toothpaste remembering to limit the amount to a smear for children under 3 years and a pea sized portion (like the size of a grain of rice) for children over 3. If your child is not getting enough fluoride, talk to your pediatrician or dentist about fluoride drops for your baby. Choosing a toothbrush for kids There is a lot of choice when it comes to purchasing a toothbrush, which makes it difficult to know what to look for. A good starting point is to ask your dentist for a recommendation. Choose a toothbrush for your child that has a small brush head which makes it easier to get to the hard-to-reach places Let your child choose his/her toothbrush from the ones you know are appropriate for him/her Choose a soft toothbrush with non-slip grips which make them easy for children to hold. Replace your childs toothbrush every 3 months, after a cold or illness, or when the bristles lose their shape.

1. Celery Celery is an effective weapon against the bacteria inside your mouth. In addition to the obvious health benefits of eating celery, it also causes you to chew more, producing additional saliva. As you generate saliva, it kills the bad bacteria present in the mouth. Celery may not taste as good, but is a healthy alternative to plaque-producing potato chips. The extra water contained in celery is a good way to clean your teeth, sort of like naturally brushing your teet...h. 2. Onions You may not think so, but eating onions is a great way to eliminate harmful bacteria inside the mouth. When you eat an uncooked onion, the substances in the onion work to destroy the bacteria that are eating away at your teeth. You may be concerned about stinky breath, but the benefits are worth it. Simply follow up with some sugar free gum and you are good to go. 3. Shitake Mushrooms Shitake Mushrooms work similar to onions in destroying the harmful bacteria, but they also prevent the buildup of plaque, which can turn into cavities if you do not take care of your teeth properly. 4. Cheese A tasty option for keeping your teeth looking great, cheese contains elements that are good for keeping your teeth healthy. Cheese makes you produce additional saliva, which destroys the harmful bacteria inside your mouth. In addition, cheese also works to prevent discoloration of your teeth. 5. Strawberries Strawberries are a great natural way to whiten your teeth. Brush your teeth daily with strawberries as a healthy alternative to potentially harmful whitening gels. 6. Oranges Like strawberries, oranges are also fantastic tooth whiteners. Rub a little of the skin of an orange rind on your teeth after brushing to take advantage to the benefits. 7. Milk Milk is a tasty way to keep your teeth healthy. The calcium in dairy products is effective in keeping the teeth strong. In addition, the Vitamin D helps the calcium to be absorbed more efficiently. 8. Meat Meat, fish and eggs are an excellent source of phosphorus that is needed for tooth enamel formation. 9. Bananas Bananas are high in magnesium, which is also needed to help the enamel of the teeth form properly. Whole grain foods and spinach are also good sources of magnesium. 10. Carrots Carrots and other orange-colored vegetables and fruit are great sources of beta-carotene, which is turned into Vitamin A by the body for strong teeth and bones.

Tip of the day: Cavities are the result of gradual tooth decay caused by the build-up of plaque and breakdown of protective enamel. Bacteria are normally present in the mouth; however, as they digest sugar and starches they produce acid, which weakens the enamel. Additionally, the bacteria and its acid mixes with food debris and saliva to form a sticky biofilm called plaque. Plaque that is not removed hardens into tarter, which can result in inflammation and gingivitis. The... acid within the plaque can continue to dissolve the enamel and eventually cause pits and holes, called cavities. Initially cavities are painless, but they open the tooth up to infections, eventually exposure the nerve resulting in pain. The internal structures of the tooth can also be destroyed, ultimately causing the loss of the tooth. While this might not seem important in baby teeth as they are going to be lost anyway, infection can cause damage to the growing teeth and subsequent treatments can be painful and expensive. Overall, oral hygiene is an essential component of ones health. At a recent American Heart Association research meeting, researchers shared findings that professional dental care can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The team tracked more than 100,000 people for an average of 7 years in Taiwan. They found that those who had their teeth professionally cleaned at least once every two years were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 13 percent less likely to have a stroke.

Tip of The day: Balsamic Vinegar It's certainly flavorful and delicious, but balsamic vinegar's richness comes with a cost: Its dark color makes it a tooth stainer. But don't give up those salads just yet. According to Jonathan B. Levine, D.M.D., of New York City, lettuce helps protect your teeth from stains. The lettuce forms a film over teeth that acts as a barrier to stain-forming foods. Alternatively, you can use a lighter-colored vinegar, like rice vinegar, or a spritz of lemon juice.

Tip of the day: Curry This staple of Indian cuisine is notorious for making teeth yellow. The color of curry is so intense, you can practically tell it will stain your teeth just by looking at it. The same precautionary rules apply here as with other foods that stain teeth: Brush your teeth after enjoying your plate of chicken curry, or at least swish some water in your mouth.

Tip of the day: It may be good for your heart, but red wine is bad for your smile. If youve ever looked in the mirror and smiled after sipping a glass of Shiraz or cabernet sauvignon, youve seen the results. On the upside, studies have shown that wine reduces inflammation, which can help reduce or prevent gum disease. You can always opt for white wine or swish water around your mouth after drinking

Tip of the day: Black coffee. It might be hard to get going in the morning without it, but a cup of joe is one of the worst stain offenders. The outer layer of the tooth, the enamel, is very porous, which means foods and liquids are absorbed and can discolor the tooth. But you don't have to go without java try adding a splash of milk to lighten it up. As a bonus, you'll get milk's calcium and vitamin D, both of which keep teeth strong.

Tip pf the day: Tomato sauce. Whether you serve spaghetti marinara or Bolognese, tomato-based sauces can stain your teeth, but that's no reason to avoid this Italian staple. Just eat an appetizer of spinach or broccoli first. These veggies, like lettuce, form a protective film over teeth so foods that stain can't seep into your teeth's pores.

Tip of the day: Treatment of Bad Breath It is important to conduct thorough oral hygiene at home twice daily utilizing tooth brushing with a fluoride antibacterial toothpaste and flossing to remove food debris and plaque on teeth, bridgework and implants, and brushing the tongue to remove odor-causing bacteria. A published study reported that tongue and tooth brushing in combination with dental flossing significantly decreased bleeding of the gum tissue over a two week period of time as well as reduced bad breath1. Another clinical study conducted by the University of Buffalo dental researchers confirmed that brushing twice a day with an antibacterial toothpaste and using a tooth brush with a tongue cleaner can eliminate bad breath

Tip#2: Four out of five cavities in children under 12 occur on the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The teeth most at risk of decay are the six year molars and twelve year molars. The biting surfaces of these molars erupt into the mouth often with deep grooves and pits. Even if your child brushes his or her teeth, it is almost impossible for him or her to clean the deep hills and valleys on the back teeth. These teeth are at greatest risk of decay when they first erupt int...Continue reading

1st tip of our page : Crunchy, crispy fruits have an abrasiveness that can help to lift stains from the teeth and give the illusion that they are whiter. "They're like nature's toothbrush," Glosman says. Try munching on apples, celery and carrots, which have enough abrasiveness to clean tooth surface without posing any harm to the enamel, says Emanuel Layliev D.D.S., a cosmetic dentist at the NY Center for Cosmetic Dentistry. "The crispier the better," he says
