Proud to be part of of the Malagash Ciderys newest endeavour - a bar. Also was an excuse to visit an old friend. Red oak cut and mulled by Phil Clarke in Lakevale. End grain cutting board on the corner made from Black Locust cut by myself in Jimtown and mulled by Phil.
Delivered today: The Mahoneys 7. Quartersawn red oak six legged Stretcher table. 42 inches wide by 4 foot long, stretches out to seven foot long with leaves in. Leaves store inside the table itself, so no forgetting about them in a closet. First of six legs for a fairly complex adjustable table with leaves. Mortice and tenon joinery. Red oak cut and sawn by Phil Clarke in Lakevale. Top and frame will be quarter sawn oak, also by Phil and lovely to work with. Sliders are to be sugar maple.
About time I built something for my own family. New kitchen built out of the old pews from the Jimtown Chapel. Wood is elm, which was lovely to work with. The Lovely Suzy Foster deserves a design credit.
Delivered - The Keppoch Trestle. It was a pleasure to work with Nicole MacDonald and her husband on this table. They knew what they wanted but also gave room for creativity in design. It made the project a real pleasure and Im proud to have a piece of my work as part of their new home. This table is made with Red Oak cut in Antigonish Harbour and milled by Archie MacKenzie of Lakevale. It is counter height with a corresponding bench. Both feature wedged joinery. https://www.jimtownmade.com/gallery/
A customer had a lovely antique blanket box that they wanted turned into a coffee table with a natural finish. Red oak with a beeswax finish. The wax comes from Cornect Family Farm - you can find them at the Antigonish Farmers Market.
Hobbit baby jail door. Red oak and Mahogany with a beeswax finish.
Delivered today - The Bayfield 9. This nine foot table is built from 150 year old barnboards from Antigonish Harbour. It has a varnish over epoxy finish for extreme durability and a drawer with hand chiseled dovetails.
Installed today: Maryvale Desk. This desk was built to fit the specific footprint of the space underneath a curved staircase. It is built with yellow birch milled by Phil Clarke in Lakevale. The nature of the space meant that after its test assembly in the shed, it was taken apart and put back together in underneath the staircase. Hand chiseled dovetails on the drawer. Mortis and tenon joinery on the legs.
Jimtown Made now has a website - though it needs some social media optimization. https://www.jimtownmade.com/
A bit of a fresh take on kitchen cabinets - Im calling them Fairmont Cabinets. Yellow Birch top with lumber from Lakevale sawyer Phil Clarke. The rest is hemlock I cut with Jamie Braid on the Fairmont Road a bit over a year ago. Legs were spun on the lathe with through joinery highlighted by purple heart wedges. Dave Maybee and Amy Vandenhoogen were great to work with on this.
Chad and Kailin had a good idea for the elegant cast iron base of an old foot pedal Singer Sewing Machine. It was a pleasure helping them make it a reality. Oak quarter-sawn by Lakevale sawyer Phil Clarke with a hand chiseled Purple Heart bow-tie.
Black locust countertop with hand chiseled Purple Heart bow ties. Jamie Braid and I cut the locust off Buddy Doucets property three years ago. Its been curing in the shed ever since.
Trial and error and error and error ....
Done today - solid hardwood desk. I was aiming for a sense of lightness with this desk. The quarter sawn oak drawers are cantilevered from sugar maple tapered legs to create clean lines. Its based upon 1960s era Scandinavian furniture.
Delivered today - a bookshelf to the home of Dave and Beth Fox. The shelf is trimmed out with maple that Beths father cut off his land a few years ago. Made the crown moulding out of a slab of two inch thick yellow birch I had in the shed. Dave and Beth were great to work with and I liked their idea of doing the shelf partially painted and partially stained and varnished.
Entertainment unit built for Paul and Laureen Boyd in Antigonish. Its made from sugar maple cut and milled by Phil Clarke in Lakevale. Paul and Laureen were great to work with on this project.
Four foot by six foot butcher island top delivered yesterday to Donny Samson in Havre Boucher. The 2 inch thick, edge grain top has a mineral oil finish and food safe/highly water resistant glue, so you can prepare food and chop items on it. It is made from sugar maple with yellow birch highlight pieces, all cut in Loch Katrine.
I was aiming for simplicity with these four foot benches that drew attention to the curve of the spun ash legs, the clean joinery of where they entered through the inch and a half thick oak top with a Purple Heart wedge. They accompanied a six foot table delivered to Jenn Miller in Linwood.
Its the type of table at which one could contemplate how best to keep the peasants in line. Delivered and assembled this 12 foot long dining table to Katie Edwards today. The top is inch and a half thick hemlock cut and milled in Barneys River by Nickie Williams and his partner in crime Joe. The legs are 6 by 6 ash cut and milled in Lakevale by Phil Clarke. The butterfly wedges are hand chiseled and made from mahogany. This table was group effort of myself and fellow Jimtown public works members Jamie Braid and Cori MacInnis. Thanks Katie for giving us this opportunity.
This 6 foot by 3 foot table is built with oak I cut 2 years ago in Antigonish Harbour and had milled by Phil Clarke in Lakevale. It is a classic style dining table with legs sporting a French curve that I spun on the lathe.
A jail for my baby. Quarter saw oak I cut two years ago in Antigonish Harbour. Wedged joinery allows the front and back to be extended into a childs or day bed when the time comes. As well, threee settings allow the mattress to be lowered as our baby grows. Purple heart wedges. Suzys due in under a month :)
