Needed to kick start my creative vibes so i started this painting. Being free to work the values is the fun part! Now I‘ll let the paint dry and work on my other paintings. In a few days or a week, i’ll come back to this painting. For the next step to work, I truly need to be in the zone and mentally ready to let the painting pull me into the details.... Focus is needed to mix the perfect colours and make this painting come to life! It’s a process, it takes time and it’s an emotional rollercoaster as you move through the stages of creating! Keep on creating, j

Love how this turned out. From 1 Canadian Leaf paddle to 3. Inspired by a commission from a lake friend! Thank you for pushing me outside my creative zone! My paddles are sourced locally from seconds; giving each paddle another chance to shine. They look beautiful hanging indoor in any home or cottage. The paddle styles vary from the Voyageur, Beaver Tail or Otter Tail paddle. The wood types may be Ash, Birch, Maple or Cherry. Most paddles are approximately 52" in length and ...5-6 inches in width. THE PROCESS That is consistent is the design and the process I use for each paddle. It involves sealing the wood first then a stain is applied. Once it has dried I apply two coats of gesso to the painted area. I sketch each design by hand. I use acrylics as my painting medium. Once completed I apply two coats of varnish. It is a lengthy process. Each step needs to dry before moving forward to the next step. My most favourite part is painting the Maple Leaf. Check out my paddle collection on my website. Link in my About page. Enjoy and keep on creating!

Throwback Thursday! When I was young I would wake up at night, set up my TV table by my bed and take out my paints. When watching cartoons from our living room table I would sit and draw the characters - Fred, Barney, Wilma, Fred. I always had a need to keep my mind and hands busy doing something. Painting, drawing, designing and creating has been a passion for mine all my life. I’m not a reader, actually I could count the number of novels I’ve read on one hand. However I c...an relate to the FEELING you must get when reading that one book, that stops time, that you must finish, that is so captivating ... well that’s how I feel when I’m creating with my hands! Follow your passion, your dream and what makes you happy! Keep on creating, j

First week back in the studio after being away 3 weeks and it is challenging getting back into the groove. I’ve been focused on these two paintings.. trying to stay loose but the detail pulls me in. Tomorrow is another day. How do you get back into the zone after being away from your work?

We have returned home from our trip. We safely visited with 32 friends and family, travelled 2756 km and stayed in 7 towns. I’m impressed to see how the new regulations are being upheld in every town and place we stayed. Everyone looking out for each other. Keeping Ontario safe! Today I’m back in the studio to finish up a few commissions and get ready for a Fall show. I finished my blog - 21 days away in August. It contains the adventures of our trip and my Artist Life tips t...o contemplate in our everyday lives. Link is in my smart bio or website. Enjoy the animal photos I’ve taken from our farm visit .. it was so inspiring. These photos and the 100’s of others i have taken will be used as references to create my ‘Farm Animal’ series this winter. Let me know what you think of my current blog. I hope to continue blogging as I work in the studio this Fall. Keep on creating! j

Inquiring minds want to know! Artist tip: Understanding perspective is key to sketching your designs on canvas. Learning doesn't have to happen in a classroom - take the time in a fun way to re-confirm key drawing concepts. Even if it’s on a napkin in a restaurant.. draw boxes and doodle for fun! It can be a great creative outlet. Keep on sketching!

I decided to start blogging to capture tips, best practices and lessons learned from my daily life experiences as an artist! My goal is to achieve a few things.. Improve my writing skills - challenging but a must.. ... Reflect on my daily activities - realizing how each day teaches us something new or reminds us of the things we should keep doing. Slow down, reflect, feel grateful - confirming that we do achieve a ‘little something’ every day. It will be therapeutic and a great way to share my experiences with you. Even if it’s only 3 sentences, it will be something! Difficult but i’m going to do it and hopefully it will become easier as the days and weeks and months go by! The Mystic Moose Paddle. Photo reference courtesy of Michael Hodges. If you like it please share and help grow my reach. Thank you! Where do I start in describing this project. The commission... to design a moose paddle with an antler extended off the paddle. A 3-dimensional look, kinda like my very first Fish Paddle. My first thought was Ya Sure I can do that!! Hmmm..... I started as I always do by printing out a reference image cropped to fit the paddle. From there I tape the pattern to the paddle, and then reflect to ensure the paddle style and design work well together. Next I created the antler from a pine board. Once happy with the look - I drilled holes to insert my dowels to help secure the antler to the paddle. Who said an artist needed so many tools.. good thing i acquired them over the years.. they sure do help with my creative projects! From there I started my painting... As always i start with the eyes. The key focal point for these projects. I love it when it feels like the animal is looking back at you. Do you have a creative idea in mind? If so reach out and let’s make it happen. Keep on creating, j @ Salerno Lake

Acrylic on Canvas - 15x30 Crisp Spring Morning on Salerno Lake Photo reference courtesy of Kevin Pepper Done and Sold! This painting has just returned from Toronto Image Works. Prints are NOW available.... It’s not easy to express my feelings about this painting. Salerno means so much to so many of us that share this lake. It has given us so many great memories that we will cherish forever.. Living here and having the opportunity to paint and share its beauty is a privilege. I’m very happy that this painting will be off to a forever home that I can visit. Keep on creating, j
