Mobility, aka a person's ability to move and do the things they need to do each day, is an important ingredient in having a long, healthy, and happy life. Most of us have stuck places within our bodies. Ways in which our bodies can’t or won’t move. Places where we lack the freedom of movement that we may want or need to function optimally in our lives. Stretching is a valuable tool to loosen up those stuck places and increase your options for maintaining and increasing mov...ement. While stretching, many people should be using various supportive props to assist them. Yet while many people have a very real physical need for supportive aids while stretching, any number of mental and emotional issues often keeps them from using one. In this article I explore several of those reason, the dangers of not using supportive aids as well as the benefits, and how you can approach this discussion with clients. Why is touch so critical to your wellbeing and the wellbeing of every person (as well as most animals) on this planet? Quite simply put, touch is the first sense we develop. It begins from the time we are in the womb and can feel our mother’s heartbeat through the amniotic fluid. When we are born, how much touch we receive from our caregivers greatly affects how we develop physically, mentally, and emotionally.... Studies have found that a lack of supportive, nurturing, and affectionate touch during those critical childhood years can lead to or be associated with: ~ cognitive delays ~ body image dissatisfaction ~ depression ~ eating disorders A study by Dr. Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, looked at 49 cultures and found that: The cultures that exhibited minimal physical affection toward their young children had significantly higher rates of adult violence. She also said. Those cultures that showed significant amounts of physical affection toward their young children had virtually no adult violence. I would say this fact alone makes a pretty strong case for why healthy touch is so important. But it is just one of many reasons that healthy touch is critical to not only our survival but also our ability to thrive. So, take a little time today and everyday to snuggle, cuddle or hug the children in your life (when and where it is healthy, appropriate and safe of course).
