Chemotherapy made Kim’s hair fall out. It happened sooner than she expected. She mentally prepared by cutting her hair shorter. Soon after, her hair started falling out in clumps. Kim in her usual positive fashion, embraced the change and pushed forward. Her sister Becky had purchased a wig in Regina and I carried it in my luggage to Vancouver. This was Kim’s first wig. She had many hats and turbans so she looked forward to the idea of hair. Kim’s older sister, Nat, also has health issues (Hasimoto’s and Alopecia) which has led to hair loss. Nat was showing Kim how to use and position the wig. Here they are in Nat’s home. . . . #ovariancancer #ovariancancerawareness #ovariancancercanada #cbc #womenphotograph #womenphotographers #yqrphotographer #saskphotographer #documentaryphotography #reportagespotlight #bnwphotography

There are pockets of light that seep into my home. It's almost in slow motion. Like swimming underwater with the tide pushing against your skin. Not overpowering like the sea, but a lake surrounded by trees on a summer day. Still able to open your eyes and look underneath the surface, yet not needing any breath. ... The light in my home greets me as though we were long time friends. It warms my heart with wonder and gratitude. And I sit there in awe as I watch it grow, and dance, and play. It has not been taught to move one way or another. It moves because of it's connection to nature. The intimacy of a lover who has danced with your soul. But the secrecy within your diary pages that only you know. . . . #poetry #light #dancinglights #bnwmood #bnwminimalismmag #bnwminimalism #shotsmagazine #presence #bnw_captures #bnwmood #igbnw #ig_bnw_legit #photographerswithoutborders #thebeautifulreal #inspiration #timetobehave #thoughts See more

When you can no longer speak I am your voice. Advocacy is crucial to those individuals whose voices are not heard. My mom is one of them. Her voice is quiet and distorted with words that are sometimes difficult to understand. So I disobey then rules which gets me into trouble, but I don’t care. Her words (as difficult as it is to speak) need to be heard and validated and engaged. She needs connection even if it is only through sound and sight. Sometimes rules need to be brok...en in order to provide a quality of life one deserves. Today I spent some time at Walking With Our Angels camp. The fire continues to burn and there seems to be an increase in support as the days go by. One thing I have noticed was the outpouring of support Tristen has received. Individuals will stop by to bring tea, honey, vitamins, , books, firewood, water, cash for upcoming legal fees, and night patrol. I can sense their compassion and empathy. There are so many kind humans in this world, it brought a few tears to my eyes. I h...ave not been around camp 24/7 so have not been able to witness all of the kind deeds. Tristan has made a historical journey from Northern Saskatchewan to Regina. Tristan’s journey to Regina was provoked by the government’s decision to turn down the NDP’s suicide prevention bill. He has known too many individuals who have committed suicide and is aware of the high statistics surrounding suicide. His heart was heavy and felt compelled to do something to create change in their honour. Outside of his teepee, you will find the faces of individuals who have passed a...way from suicide. There are battery operated candles resting in front with offerings of tobacco. In addition, to his presence at the Legislative Building, Tristan has been on a hunger strike. He has been sipping on water and tea for the past six days. He plans to continue for as long as possible. Tristan’s sense of empathy and compassion is overwhelming. I have so much respect for him and am grateful he has agreed to let me photograph him. If you feel compelled to support Tristan, he is accepting firewood, water, and battery operated candles. . . . #walkingwithourangels #suicideprevention #cbc #reportagespotlight #yqrphotographer #documentaryphotography #treatyfourterritory #documentaryphotographer #bnw_captures #igbnw #womenphotographer #womenstreetphotographers #burnmagazine #ctvregina #cbc #friendsinprofile @ Regina, Saskatchewan See more

Every Dog’s Story by Mary Oliver I have a bed, my very own. It’s just my size. And sometimes I like to sleep alone ... with dreams inside my eyes. ***Please be aware photographs in this post capture a surgery. If you follow my ongoing story about Rosie, the dog, who was initially diagnosed with a subcutaneous mast cell tumour. She received surgery to remove it and had chemotherapy to follow. The chemotherapy had gone smoothly and Jenny (her owner and veterinarian) was hopeful about the prognosis. However, another tumour quickly developed. Jenny allowed me to photograph the removal of this tumour. The reports came bac...k from the tumour and this time the results were not favourable. It was a mast cell tumour metastasis to the lymph node - aggressive, extensive local tissue invasion, invasion of the lymphatic vessels, therefore, an incomplete removal. Rosie’s prognosis isn’t good. Jenny estimates Rosie has 4-6 months left to live. Jenny and I spoke about the prognosis and her relationship with Rosie. The first part of Rosie’s life was difficult. However, when Jenny adopted her, Rosie just began living. Dogs become our family. We learn from one another and grow together. Jenny and Rosie have a beautiful and unique bond. Jenny accepts there is nothing more she can do as a veterinarian to stop the cancer in Rosie. Now it’s about providing Rosie with the best quality of life. It’s about continuing to surround Rosie with love (and treats). The compassion and empathy Jenny shows, not only to Rosie, but to all her patients is incredibly beautiful. She is a wonderful human being and veterinarian. #dogcancer #lakewoodanimalhospital #surgery #documentaryphotographer #documentaryphotography #saskphotographer #cbc #yqrphotographer @ Regina, Saskatchewan See more

People often ask me to choose my most memorable moments of my work in Vietnam. All of it is ingrained within my mind. The people I met, the smell, the taste, the sound and the energy I felt. In this particular home, an 18 year old boy, resided with his parents and two younger sisters. The sisters were approximately 8 years old and 12 months old. I asked the boy what he would like to make his life easier. His reply was to be smart. He had never attended school due to his dis...ability. He didn’t have a wheelchair and there were no schools that could accommodate someone with a disability, let alone one who had no means to assist with mobility. They resided in a traditional home which was very isolated in the jungle. The boy would drag his body across the floor with one arm in order move. The family couldn’t afford diapers, so his baby sister would pee on the floor and afterwards he would drag his body overtop. The boy’s 8 year old sister signed the consent forms on behalf of her family bc her parents were illiterate. All this boy wanted to do was to participate in life outside his home. He wanted to learn. All he wanted was to be smart. . . . #photographerswithoutborders #vietnam #disabilityawareness #disabilityadvocate #natgeoyourshot #womenphotograph #womenphotographers #natgeovietnam #womenstreetphotographers @ Vietnam See more

I was driving into the city and a hitchhiker caught my eye. I had the feeling that I needed to turn around and meet this person. As I pulled up my vehicle, I recognized the hitchhiker. His name was Sylvain. I had met him almost exactly one year ago on Scarth Street where he was busking. When I walked up to Sylvain, I reintroduced myself and remembered that he had not seen his photos. I usually email the photos to people I meet, but Sylvain did not have an email address. So on... the side of the highway, Sylvain and I looked at the photos I took of him one year ago. He expressed happiness when I showed him. And his happiness overflowed into me. Sylvain has spent his winter in Edmonton busking. He thought he would stop in Regina for awhile, but the cool weather had made it hard for him to make money busking. After spending some time in one of the shelters here, he decided to make his way back home to Montreal. I recently returned home from a trip to Costa Rica. One of my intentions for this trip was to connect to myself. The ocean water has always felt like home to me. The waves flowing with such ease, yet carrying so much power, never ceases to amaze me. I feel this within my own being. The flow of energy that comes and goes, changes form to come and go again, and yet it’s foundation stays the same. When I left for Costa Rica, I didn’t bring my camera. I wanted to immerse myself w...ith the space and use my phone if I felt the need to photograph something. I describe photography as my purpose but sometimes I question my purpose, and the lessons that it teaches me. I want to break away from the force that propels me towards it. I want to dive beyond the waves, to the bottom of the ocean and lay there watching the water dance above me. The universe continually reminds me of my purpose and reassures me that all these lessons come from a much larger place. I wasn’t planning to photograph people in Costa Rica. Yet somehow, I managed to photograph three while only using my iPhone. I held hands with these strangers, communicated through the use of touch and eye contact and recognized these moments reaffirm my purpose. I see people. Their beauty, their strength, their resilience. I hope this comes across in my work and at the end of the day, I hope this drop of water creates a beautiful dance within this world. . . . . #powerofwater #water #waves #costarica #documentaryphotography #bnw_captures #bnwmood #bnwmagic #bnwminimalismmag #bnwmagazine #fireheart #thebeautifulreal #saskatchewanphotographer #yqrphotographer See more

We traveled deep into Vietnam’s forest to meet Dinh Minh Loan and his family. The commune they reside in was isolated, as were the many other communes in the forest we had visited. My sense of curiosity introduced me to Jesse @nomadic_ninja_yxe . He and his cute pup, Layla, were living in a van. I was intrigued by this sense of freedom that van life offered. We ended up chatting about van life and just life in general. Blake is now 10 months old. (I photographed her as a newborn with her mom and their scars) She is mobile and exploring the world. Her surgery in utero was considered very successful. However, Blake’s mobility on her leg is limited. She started working with Erica who is an exercise therapist at @firststepswellnesscentre . I was absolutely amazed with this nonprofit organization and they work they do for individuals who have neuro-muscular disorders. They stimulate both sensory... and mobility function as a way to strengthen those connections within the body. These photos are from a therapy session there. . . . . #spinabifida #spinabifidaawareness #spinabifidababy #firststepswellnesscentre #yqrdocumentaryphotographer #saskphotographer #thebeautifulreal #dfpcommunity #documentaryphotography #gettyimages #bnw_captures #shotsmagazine @ Saskatchewan See more

my feet walked my body and my heart walked my soul. marble, granite, I can’t remember. but I recognized its strength. they were wet and cold from a past rain.... so I climbed until I couldn’t. my eyes focused on my feet. while I took that final step, it changed. and a field of grass stood as guards of the forest. skimming the earth with my toes, I made my way forward. we met halfway in the meadow. stars blooming, moon phasing. and here we were, dancing in the moonlight. ~this self portrait was completed over a year ago. Love comes in many forms. When your soul meets that other soul, something within you changes. What you knew before, may not even exist anymore bc what you experienced was so profound. It is something you can never forget. Jenny met Rosie seven years ago. Rosie was a breeding dog, sold to somebody. She ran away from that person and was found wandering and scared in rural SK. Rosie ended up in New Hope Dog Rescue in Saskatoon. When she was found she was too skinny, terrib...le fur, saggy boobs from a recent litter. When Jenny met Rosie, Rosie pressed her head into her chest and Jenny just fell in love with how sweet she was. They have been inseparable ever since. Recently, Jenny found a lump on Rosie and promptly performed surgery yesterday to have it removed (Jenny is an amazing veterinarian at @lakewoodanimalhospital ). The lump was cancerous, so after Rosie recovers from surgery, she may be receiving chemotherapy. Jenny wanted to document this moment so I will be following their journey. But whatever way you look at it, this is ultimately a story about love. . . . . #dogcancer #doglovers #documentaryphotography #bnwlove #bnwmood #ig_bnwlovers #themonochromaticlens #thebeautifulreal #bnwminimalismmag #bnwmagazine #connection #yqrphotographer @ Saskatchewan See more

Today I met Gunther and Ary who were hitchhiking to Montreal. They met in BC during the spring and decided to travel together. They explained that they had not eaten for awhile and were excited that @thechoppedleaf had given them fresh sandwiches. Ary has gone there asking for leftovers and they gave her fresh food instead. Both of them have traveled regularly and are interested in visiting all areas of Canada before visiting a different country. Gunther thinks the best part of traveling is meeting other individuals and connecting over music and conversation. #hitchhikers #womenstreetphotographers #documentaryphotography #shotsmagazine #greymagazine #yqrphotographer #unvaeljournal #saskatchewanphotographer @ Saskatchewan

You know those experiences where you realize a lesson will be learned, but it ends up being so much more. This is one of those moments. Myself and my friend Lara agreed to be hiking/camping guides for Ron and Monique who have visual impairments. Ron, who is also known as the blind adventurer created the Blind Adventure Foundation. The foundation provides individuals who have visual impairments to experience various adventures. The plan was to hike and camp 40 km to Grey O...wls Cabin. Unfortunately, the condition of the trail didn’t allow us the cover the intended distance. However, the purpose of the foundation is for individuals to have an experience they wouldn’t typically receive. Ron mentioned that it has been difficult to get guides for these blind adventures. Regardless of the outcome, Monique was able to do something out of her comfort zone, which was an incredible feat within itself. As I reflect on this trip, here are two visually impaired individuals who invited absolute strangers to guide them on a backcountry trail. They put all of their trust in us to ensure they were safe and secure. Now that is something. As humans, we have created so many barriers based on fear through our ego. Part of that comes from our basic five senses....sight. When that sense is removed, you have no choice but to trust. It is an interesting concept to think that our senses have an experience and then our ego translates that into mistrust based on a negative experience or just fear. It is a great reminder that we need to start trusting ourselves more and remove the fear based conversations that take away from actually enjoying this life. I need to thank my very good friend Jenn for inviting me to do this with her and Lara (unfortunately she blew out her knee at soccer a few days prior to our departure). And to my friend, Lara for being an amazing travel partner. This experience still seems a bit surreal but I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and lessons. @ Grey Owl Cabin See more
