Finished up this walnut credenza while we were on our social media vacay and are so thrilled with how it turned out Our wonderful client wanted some custom wine glass holders inside and room for glassware for this credenza turned bar. The handles were custom built using our @shapertools and are oh so comfortable to use (especially with the soft close hinges). This solid wood credenza also features hand shaped legs that add to its Midcentury modern curves. Thanks @althausyx...e for making this happen! . . . #shaperorigin #walnutcredenza #solidwoodcredenza #midcenturycredenza #solidwoodfurniture #yxedesign #yxefurniture #saskatoonfurniture #yxeinteriordesign #yxeinteriors #yxemakers #madeinsk #madeinyxe #madeinsask #modernheirloomfurniture #customfurniture #sasklocal #yxelocal #yxeliving #madeinsaskatchewan #canadianfurniture See more

Our online shop is now live again with updated products. We did a lot of planning over the past few weeks of new pieces of furniture we’ll like to build. Stay tuned for a new line of outdoor furniture and a couple of multipurpose credenzas in the near future We have updated our prices on items to more accurately reflect the amount of time we spend building them and the ever increasing price of materials. The lumber market is incredibly volatile right now. Closures of mills... and manufacturers due to the pandemic coupled with the increased demand for materials has shot the price up well over 200% for certain types of lumber. Increased costs for shipping materials, slowed shipping times (covid again), and overseas demand has additionally driven up costs. We are guessing there is a bit of price gouging going on as well since the demand for construction, home renovations, and furniture remains quite high despite all of these inflated costs because, generally, the population is staying at home more and using money saved up for vacation in home improvement projects. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Quoting projects has gotten tricky as the prices of materials seem to change every day! Sorry to be a bummer, but we just wanted to be transparent about the increased costs. What is the craziest price jump you have seen in the last year? For us, the wildest one we’ve seen is sheets of osb. 1 year ago they were $10-15/ sheet. Now they are $46/sheet. . . . #onlineshopupdate #covidprices #lumbermarket #volatilemarket #woodpricesarecrazy #saskatoonfurniture #yxedesign #yxemakers #yxe #saskatoon #saskatoondesign #skfurniture #madeinsk #madeinyxe #madeinsask #onlinefurnitureshop #yxelocal #yxefurniture

Hello friends! We’re back on social media from a wonderful 3 week break As we get back into the groove of things we’ll be slowly sharing some news and updates from us. As we mentioned before, we wanted to take a little break to increase our productivity and wow did that ever help! We’ve been working on all kinds of things over here and can’t wait to share some finished projects. Unfortunately, prior to our break, social media had been feeling really forced & fake, both in t...he things others posted and some stuff we had even posted ourselves. In order to keep up with the algorithm, we had been posting a few things just for the sake of posting and that didn’t make us happy. So new motto going forward is screw the algorithm We’re going to make sure we only post when we feel like it and what we feel like posting. Life outside these little squares is far more important and our goal is to share those parts of life with you in meaningful and authentic ways. We also have the official end of winter here in Saskatchewan with lots of wonderfully warm springy weather giving us reasons to be happy. To be honest, we’ve mostly just been out walking #shopdogfern and working in the shop these last 3 weeks, but without social media, it has felt like a vacation. We’re going to have some boundaries with ourselves re: time on these apps going forward, but for now we’re happy to be back. We missed all you lovely people! What awesome things have you folks been up to in the last month that you want to share? See more

This bench is finished! Certainly a departure from our usual style, this chunky slab of elm was calling for a bit more of an organic shape with thick walnut legs to balance it. Now folks, don’t get too excited: this is going to be the only one of its kind. This has been a work in progress for over a year while we figured out what we wanted to do with it. While the elm slab and legs have indeed been a bench for a long time, it always seemed to be lacking something. We think the power carving the edges with a burr bit added interest; reminiscent of worm holes or live edge. Expect to see more creative one offs this year as we explore new skills in woodworking P.S. this bench is now available on our online shop (link in bio).

Our last holiday commission was this lovely box for a sweet girl who asked for one for Christmas (name blurred out for privacy). It was our first time building a box and first time using the @shapertools to make box joints. We used ambrosia aka wormy maple for the wood and hand carved the handle. We are done our holiday vacation tomorrow (Monday) and had planned to do all these things like take an iPhone photography course, work on our house, and more. Well that didn’t ...happen, but we did what our bodies decided they actually needed - we rested. We went for a winter run, ate lots of food, watched a bunch of tv, played video games, and Jarrett couldn’t say no to a bit of work in the shop on some long unfinished projects It was great! Our minds are no longer the mush that was sitting in our heads where our were supposed to be after too many long nights in the shop. Happy 2021 everyone! Ready for the first Monday of the year? Getting crafty with the Dremel and some burr bits on this bench! Creative things happening over here in 2021! For us, 2020 was a great year, but also a shit one. A lot of loss, frustration, missing people, and sometimes despair. We also had some major transitions for J-Man (the good kind) and a lot of camping so it wasn’t that bad. Things were learned; highlights include theft prevention , how to spot & thwart tire kickers, and how to manage to work with your life partner... during a lockdown in which they are basically the only person you see for long stretches of time... Most importantly, we learned what was truly important to us (friends, family, good physical and mental health) and what wasn’t (Stuff, normal, being polite, judging ourselves or others for the ways we coped). So here’s to 2021: a year where we might finallylearn to say no to stuff we don’t want to do or have time for. Oh and a lot more camping! See more

Well folks! That’s it for this year! We’re going to attempt to have a relaxing holiday break... which means that communication over here is going to be slow and that is intentional. We might post on here, we might not We’re planning on doing some outdoor adventuring, snuggling with #shopdogfern, watching movies in bed during the day, ohhhh and working... but only on things we want to work on like our house which was supposed to be a live in flip, but turns out it’s just our... home that we live in and don’t work on See you all on the other side of this year we’d like to forget! We’re confident 2021 has to go better than 2020... it just has to. Happy holidays & best wishes for all of you wonderful people for 2021. We are so grateful for all of the ways you have supported us and other small & local businesses over this tough year. It is truly appreciated. Cheers! See more

Charcuterie Board Care To ensure a long life for your charcuterie or serving board, please consider the following tips: Do not wash in hot soapy water unless absolutely necessary. This will strip off any finish. Please wipe clean immediately with a warm cloth and gentle cleanser.... Your finish will wear off eventually so use coconut oil or mineral oil to re-season your board. This helps to protect it from food stains and allows the board to be more easily wiped down. . . . #charcuterieboardcare #charcuterieboard #servingboard #cuttingboard #kitchenmaintenance #yxe #woodworking #handmadeholidays #savethis #madeincanada #canadamade #madeinsask #saskmade #yxelocal #yxelocalbusiness

The Mitch Buchannon board is back in action for another run this holiday season. This is the only charcuterie board that we continue to make over and over again. A J-Man Carpentry classic. That ombré combo of walnut, cherry, and maple with the little circle: reminiscent of the setting on a wide open view of the That epoxy knot in the second one though . . . #charcuterie #charcuterieboard #servingboard #cuttingboard #woodart #mitchbuchannon #ambrosiamaple #cherrywood #wormymaple #walnut #walnutwood #maplewood #holiday2020 #shopprojects #madeinyxe #madeinsask #yxe #christmasgifts #treatyoself #saskmade #handmadeholidays #kitchengoods #homegoods #kitchenboard #holidaycheer #partyaccessories

This was last project we did before full lockdown near the end of March. Somewhat fitting to get an update from our wonderful clients as we are again heading into another lockdown period. This bulkhead was just plain ol’ painted drywall and they wanted to jazz it up a bit. Tongue in groove cedar now clads the bulkhead and we are REALLY digging the lights they picked out! It’s so easy to change up builder basic homes to make them your own! Add a little paint (no beiges or gr...eiges people!), new hardware, new lighting fixtures, or even some funky wood accents. It’s amazing what those little things will do to change the atmosphere of a home The best part about those little bits vs. a full reno - you can get a little crazy or creative and it’s easily changed again when you get tired of it! . . . #bulkhead #woodaccent #cedar #cedartongueandgroove #woodcladding #funkylights #pendantlights #minireno #homeupdate #kitchenupdate #yxe #yxehomes #easyupdates See more

It’s shaping up to be a busy November for us. Pictured here is the pieces to a solid cherry bookshelf in the queue. The tiny shop is a bit tricky to maneuver with a couple projects on the go . How do we manage in a small shop? Organization is the answer. Keeping organized saves time and money in the grand scheme of things. Progress shots of the bookshelf to follow later this week!
