My friend Dr. Merissa Beard has done an excellent job demonstrating one of the key concepts I teach my clients. Core engagement is not about bringing the belly button to the spine like the picture on the left. But like Merissa on the right described creating a 360 degree engagement causing the torso to become a powerful unit. When this is done properly the core can create a powerful fulcrum and allow your limbs to be the levers, like in Outrigger canoe at the catch, swimming at the catch, increased momentum running, and multiple other sports.
