Rule Following 101 ABA practitioners usually refer to this as compliance, but really it is simply following an adult instruction or rule. A question I often hear parents ask is "How do I get my child to listen more?" and there's so many tips and endless advice one can give when it comes to this particular topic, but here a few proven tips to help get your child to listen more and follow instructions. 1 Make sure your child is able to hear you. First a...nd foremost, before you give any instruction, make sure you are close enough to your child that they can hear you. Gaining eye contact first also helps. 2 Use simple language when instructing your child and state the instruction in a clear voice. For example, say: You can jump on the floor or on the trampoline, instead of How many times have I told you to stop jumping on that couch? Get down right now. Your child is most likely to listen when they know what is expected of them. Also, remember to avoid asking an instruction unless No is an acceptable answer. For example, do not say: Hey, do you want to stop jumping on that couch? or "Don't jump on that couch okay?" 3 Pause and wait to allow your child to follow your instructions. After you give a clear, concise instruction, wait 5 to 10 seconds for your child to follow your instruction. Sometimes your child may need more time to process what you said and to see if you mean it. If they do, let them know they did a great job. If they do not, assist them to follow the instruction. 4 Lastly, be consistent with your expectations. If you tell your child to stop jumping on the couch and they do not, walk over and remove them from the couch. Do not keep stating an instruction over and over if your child did not listen the first time that way your child can learn to follow instructions right away. Let me know if you've tried any of these tips and which one(s) work best for your child. See more

TIP TUESDAY: Here are some simple tips you can implement in your child's daily routine to help reinforce positive behaviour. Using social rewards (like hugs, kisses and verbal praises) more than material rewards (like toys or candy) can not only encourage positive behaviour but can also boost your child's self-confidence. Visual charts, such as visual schedules and first then boards, are a big YES when it comes to reinforcing desired skills and establi...shing routines. It lets your child see what is expected of them which can help reduce problem behaviours. Ignore misbehaviours by taking away attention from the behaviors you want to decrease. For instance, if your child keeps tugging at your shirt and calling your name and you tell your child to stop, then you have given your child's behaviour attention. Like in this example, if you find yourself giving attention to negative behaviours more than positive behaviours, ignore the misbehaviour so your child will learn that he/she will not receive attention for misbehaving and instead give more positive attention when your child does something good. This way you and your child can focus more on building positive skills and behaviours rather than negative ones. What are some strategies that help you? Tip of the day: Instead of telling your child to take deep breaths, try this breathing exercise to help them manage their emotions. The simple act of tracing the hand encourages your child to redirect their focus and be present, allowing them to better regulate and process their emotions.
