Now Available - online Video Analysis Since the weather is changing somewhat, and people are back to being indoors more, I thought it was good timing to introduce the online video analysis. Here is how it works: You submit a video of your swing (best is to get 2 views - SIDE VIEW as if I was standing looking at you face-on as well as BACK VIEW as if I was standing looking down the target line), along with e-transfer payment $100. We arrange a mutually-convenient time to ha...ve a web-based conference call with shared screen capability (likely ZOOM). It would be great if you can also tell me if there is something specific you are having trouble with on the range or course. Prior to our appointment, I will spend 30 min editing/preparing your video using a specially-designed app meant for analyzing gross motor skills (any sport/dance activity). At the time of the appointment, I will spend 30 min showing your what you have done well and discussing ways to improve based on your goal. I will follow up with notes and a link to or copy of your video. Please call me or email me for clarification or to arrange an appointment. **ALSO AVAILABLE AS A GIFT CERTIFICATE**

Good morning - I have good news and some not-so-good news. THE GOOD NEWS: I have confirmation that if all goes well I can start teaching the week of June 15. THE NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS: Advice on lessons is that the ratio is no more than 2:1 - 2 students to 1 instructor. This is both for safety and logistics, since only 1/2 the hitting bays (sections) on the range are in use. About 13 out of 26, so to speak. Please be respectful of this current "normal", as golf courses and espe...cially Turnberry Golf Club try to accommodate everyone's needs and good health. Therefore - if you are interested in lessons, please call my cell at 416-579-3176, or better yet, email me at [email protected] and we will go about setting something up for June 15 or beyond. If you have emailed me already with an inquiry about lessons, I will get back to you this week. **Please note my prices have been changed slightly - this is the first time I have raised the price of lessons since 1996; I hope you all understand and thank you for your patronage** **Please also note that you must have your own (or borrowed) golf clubs as Turnberry's policy this season is NO RENTAL CLUB PROTOCOL AVAILABLE**

Nice weather is finally here! Get out and practice your PRE-SHOT ROUTINE. Whether it is a putt, chip, pitch or full iron or wood shot, you should establish a pre-shot routine. This is a set of things you do consistently in order to best prepare yourself for the shot. Things to consider/do in your standardized pre-shot routine: - get back about 10 feet from the ball, making sure it is right between you and the target... - decide on an "interim target"; a spot on the groung that is about 3 feet or less from the ball, on the way to the target - scan left and right - approach the ball for your address/starting position - set the clubface SQUARELY on the target line (at 90 degrees, perpendicular, like a "T", like a window pane) - with feet together, take a small step toward your target, on a parallel line with the front foot (about a clubhead width) - - take step away from the target on the parallel line with the back foot (caveat: the size of step with back foot is determined by the club in your hand - short club, equal size step to front step; mid-irons, slightly bigger back foot step; long irons/hybrid/woods bigger step to the back - assume your posture (inclusive of tipped over from HIP JOINTS, unlocked knees, weight on middle of feet, no tension in forearms or quadriceps) Take a breath before you pull back in your backswing. Perfect your pre-shot routine, and you will surely improve your game. Still having trouble? Come get a lesson - with a consistent pre-shot routine, it is easier for a pro to help you carve out drills to improve. Have a great long weekend! PS - things may change if you are on a side hill, uphill, downhill, in the sand, etc...the above describes a STANDARD pre-shot routine. The elements included are correct, for most shots. Skill levels and nuances may dictate for adjustments.

Good Morning Sunshine! How do you define a pitch? My definition is twofold: Either, an approach shot where you find yourself needing to get up over an obstacle, **OR** a shot that has all elements of a swing, up to and including 99% of a backswing. Also known as the "Readers Digest" version of a swing, a "part swing" or "not a whole swing" made with a wedge. Anything up to but not including loading fully in the back-swing (for most non-experts, a half-swing). This can als...o be referred as a "knock-down shot" if using a different iron. It would be unusual, although not unheard of, to use a knockdown with your hybrids, woods or driver (**especially useful on a windy day - more about that in a future post) How should one practice pitching? In a realistic situation - over something (an elevation, hill of fescue, bunker, imaginary creek, your golf bag, whatever). Try the following: - Set up at 10 - 15 yards from the apron/fringe - Starting position is regular swing address - goal is to land ball on fringe or edge of green and have ball roll out a few yards to pin or target - try pulling back so your hands get no higher than your waist, with nice soft wrists - let the club drop through the impact area - allow the club swinging to bring your body around to somewhat face the target - hold your finish position in balance - try from different distances; vary the distance by the amount you pull the club backward in the backswing but ALWAYS ALLOW THE FOLLOWTHROUGH TO BE AT LEAST AS LONG AS THE BACKSWING - **this insures a pendulum-like action with acceleration where you need it up to impact, clubhead only slowing down AFTER you have made impact As always, leave me a comment if you find this valuable - if you try it, let me know the outcome! Have a super day.

Details to follow if I get enough interest. Have a nice day (and let's hope this wet weather stops so the ranges can drain)

Good Morning this long weekend Friday! Looks like we may be up for some golf weather - so here's a little tip! Two concepts today: the LOW PERCENTAGE SHOT vs. THE NEXT SHOT. Most golfers fall prey to the "low percentage shot" - the shot they WANT to pull out of their bag because they were able to successfully execute it once before; what they should do is pull the shot out of their bag that will SET THEM UP FOR THE NEXT SHOT.... Picture a long approach shot (your 3-wood) to reach the green - but the green is protected in front with a creek about 25 yards in front. You know if you execute your 3-wood well, you will bounce on the front fringe and be right by the pin. Consider the liklihood of that perfect execution...LOW PERCENTAGE OF PROBABLE SUCCESS. Much more likely to be tight, tense and top the ball - into the creek. Conversely - if you choose a shot that will set you up comfortably for your NEXT SHOT you will be more likely to execute it well. Maybe choose the club that will put you next in a position to approach the pin from 100 yards. Get what I am saying? Most people know the club they use from 100 yards in - and they are relatively confident with it. Do yourself a huge favour! Choose to be approaching from 100 yards in - sure it may be laying up, but you will lower your score overall. Need help with those wedges-in? Call me and book a lesson. Have a nice long weekend, everyone.
