Bubbles are awesome, just ask my kids and they will tell you that! It is wonderful news to hear that the Atlantic Bubble plans to open back up in April. Families and friends that have not been able to see one another for some time who are living between these areas can finally move freely again and spend some very deserved time together. With warmer weather around the corner (ok, I know as I type this there is snow falling in Nova Scotia.. but spring IS around the corner), t...alk of the bubble returning can bring to many a feeling of relief that life is opening back up and with it a taste of normalcy. It can also bring up some difficult emotions for those families who continue to miss loved ones from outside of the Atlantic provinces. It can be painful to watch others reunite while the struggle still remains for those unable to visit with parents, grandchildren, friends, or have partners doing rotational work, outside of the bubble. For those who feel the sting during the opening of the bubble, you are not alone. Take notice of the emotions you are feeling and reach out to the people in your lives for support. If you need to talk with someone outside of your typical support system, there is professional help you can access for those needs. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #NovaScotia #NS #Counselling #Therapy #Alberta #YMM #MorrisonCounsellingAndTherapy

March 8 is International Women's Day, a global day of recognition celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls, and raising awareness of the work left to be done (Status of Women Canada; Government of Canada). The theme for IWD this year is "Choose to Challenge". Today I choose to challenge gendered stereotypes, in particular within the workforce and child care expectations. Women more often than men adjust their careers for fami...ly life, and during COVID we saw women’s participation in labour forces reach lowest level in 3 decades (RBC report). Along with stereotypic expectations that women are traditionally to take the lead on child care concerns, the wage gap also plays a critical role in determining what makes the most financial sense when it comes to a woman vs a man taking time from work to tend to child care needs. To advocate for change in these areas we must continue to challenge the dominant discourses that remains prevalent in our societies. Advancing gender equality requires a human rights approach, the engagement of the male population and supporting women’s organizations (Government of Canada). I am here to challenge. I am here to advocate. I am here to celebrate. How we talk to ourselves is so important. This exercise brings attention to 3 different parts of self-compassion: kindness, common humanity (versus being isolated in the feeling) and mindfulness. If you are noticing you could use a little more self-compassion in your day-to-day, this may be worth trying out. Fly-in fly-out, commuting work, long-distance relationship. If you or someone you know is in a relationship and a partner is travelling between Nova Scotia and Alberta, this post is for you. Relationships require work. Mix in kids, commitments, careers and/or other responsibilities that are demanding of time, and your energy can be spread thin. When a partner has to commute to another province for work it can be incredibly taxing on the entire family unit. There are unique ...challenges that come with Commuting Work and trying to balance partner and family relationships. COVID-19 restrictions has put added stress on this type of employment and the relationships surrounding those doing it. If couples therapy has been considered but limited time home together has made it difficult to attend these appointments, there is another option now being offered. COVID has shown us that we can make virtual platforms work for our needs. With this technology showing that it can be as effective as face to face appointments, we can consider that we no longer have to wait to be in the same room to have these appointments. I am able to provide virtual services to those in both Alberta and Nova Scotia, allowing partners to make an appointment together while in different provinces. If you or someone you know has been considering couples counselling and in particular there are stressors related to Commuting Work, you can contact me for a free consultation or to set up a virtual appointment.
