There’s so much painting inspiration this time of year! Out in my garden or walking through the woods, I try to quiet my mind and observe the little things nature’s life force appears in so many wondrous forms. As an expressionist artist, I draw largely on imagination, emotion and memory to shape my interpretation of nature. My painting reveals itself only when I trust these elements.

Happy New Year! Here’s my first painting of 2021 and the seventh painting in my Deep Forest series, titled Deep Forest Dawn (Sold!) This dramatic piece is filled with light and shadow and captures the magical first light of day. (For those that follow my ‘trees’ quite closely, you’ll notice that this is a new green for me phthalo green and blue turquoise. )

Fresh off the easel! Tofino Daybreak 24x30 is my newest painting that celebrates one of my family’s favourite destinations. There is no better feeling than waking up early and enjoying a full day of exploring. I love the tidal pools, trails, dramatic beaches and of course the trees! I’ve included my process photos for this painting to show how I sometimes use ‘black gesso’ and underglazes in my work.

Feeling the festive spirit! I hope we can enjoy a few good Vancouver snowfalls this season I had stained glass in mind while painting this one brilliant warm light against deep shadows.
