NEW! Prairie portals coming soon! I love the idea of shifting our perspective on familiar views to challenge our sense of belonging. That theme flows through much of my work. While I lived in other parts of Canada, many times I heard remarks of how flat the prairies were (you know, the old joke about how you can watch your dog run away for days...yep only heard that one about a thousand times!). I was always a bit surprised because that isn’t how I remembered my homeland. I ...do think of big skies and open fields that danced in the wind, northern lights that sway across the sky, canoeing on lakes surrounded by only trees and loons, wild grasslands with grazing cows, beautiful river valleys that stretch out with possibilities, and so many more vistas tied to memories. These are what I hope to convey in my paintings. Life, hope, memories, time to enjoy it all. Prairie Portals 16 inch diameter, acrylic on birch panel Releasing this month on my website. And it begins! Every time I step up to a blank canvas I have a myriad of emotions, usually topped by a conflict between euphoric excitement and terrific fear. As an artist, I feel like sometimes I put this tremendous pressure on myself to be creative, follow those visions and execute them precisely. (Please tell me I am not alone in that sense of frustration in trying to get what is in your head into reality?!)... Then I take a deep breath and remind myself to be kind. Kindness to ourselves is not something I was ever really taught, but I believe is critical to any creative process. You would certainly share compassion with a friend who was struggling, so why not allow yourself to be that friend? When I allow that kindness in (and shove the judgment out for a bit!), it’s there that the creative space becomes real and meaningful and somewhere that seems like magic. The excitement can translate into expression. The brush can tell my stories. My painting can begin its life. I wish all of you could feel that magic! Be kind. Be creative! . . . #beginningapainting #paintingprocess #inmystudio #inmyart #creativezone #creativekindness #bekindtoyourself #canadianlandscapepainter #jodimillerfineart

How many little red barns have you scene? These are such an iconic part of any prairie landscape. I often wonder the stories they hold. There is a romantic notion for me of how they were built too. Neighbours coming together to help. The landmarks they became. The generations they have supported. Thankful that this little commission can commemorate part of this history and the stories of those that know it!... . . . #jodimillerfineart #littleredbarn #redbarn #farmlife #countryliving #countrylandscape #barns #painting #barnpainting #commissionedart #barnsofinstagram See more

What keeps you going? Besides coffee, I try to start every day with positive affirmations that remind me that it is all worthwhile! It is finding a glimmer of joy when things try to pull me down, as I look up into the sky and remind myself that it is bright and beautiful. It is celebrating little things, like a hug from my kids, when the world has me questioning our direction. It is the memories of sunshine on bare shoulders and running to catch a frisbee. It is laughter tha...t makes no sense, but just won’t stop. I feel like right now, we could all use some sunshine and blue sky kind of emotional weather! That is what I am painting....blue skies. Oh hi! I thought I would re-introduce the person behind the paintings as we jump into this new year. So a bit more about me... 1. I am lucky to call myself a full-time artist and mom. Both jobs push me to my limits! 2. I am an aerospace engineer by training (I know, I know, crazy start point for an artist!) who came from small town Saskatchewan, then lived all over Canada before returning home to the prairies. ... 3. I often find myself wondering about belonging and connections. I don’t know if that stems from calling so many places home, travel to different parts of the world, the many people I have met along the way or just my curious nature. Regardless, it is a fascination that always works its way into my work. 4. My aim is always to be the happiest person I know. Some days that is more realistic than others, but I never stop trying! (Some might also call me determined ) What else would you like to know? . . . #jodimillerfineart #lovelife #canadianartist #saskartist #prairielife #farmgirl #aerospaceengineering #grateful #weirdandwonderful #naturelover #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #artforcharity #helpingeachother #jodimiller
