I was listening to the radio (AM) while driving today and they had an advertisement talking about doing Dry Days. I absolutely love this idea. I know lots are doing dry January (I see and commend you!) or do 75 day hard programs (or are completely sober) but listen in. I would have to be bold enough to say most of us that do enjoy a glass or two of wine (or have been drinking more than they did a year ago - I am completely transparent as this is me too!!), your health is ...worth paying attention to, this habit you have picked up. As a health coach I typically see people setting themselves up for failure. How? All or nothing mentality. What about setting yourself up for lifelong tactics that you can proactively practice 365 days a year? What about doing a Dry Monday or Dry weeknights. What about a dry weekend couple times a month? If you go hard core and then fall off hard (as in drinking everyday to none at all, only to pick up those habits again before your goal time length is done (because life happens). If you truly don’t have an overuse problem, what about practicing dry days all year long? I love the idea of this and have practiced this myself (I truly love a good glass of wine) ... But it’s really effective especially during the key times such as vacations, Christmas and other holidays. We often thing these are the times to indulge...but typically it’s over indulging. Let’s say you decide Mondays your official Dry Day 365 days a year. No matter what is happening or where you are. Maybe you make Monday to Thursday your dry days for 2021. When you practice this, it helps make this a healthy habit that you are able to practice easily, and will have huge effects on your health (not saying alcohol is good for health goals but if you find yourself choosing alcohol more nights than less...this could be a great fit for you). If you are looking for weightloss you will need to reduce or eliminate until your body doesn’t need to work on releasing fat (Cole’s notes: when we drink alcohol, our body has to first burn it off first before tackling breaking down your own fat - yep you can’t cheat with low carb drinks no matter what advertisements say!) Its true, that when I practice dry days be it Sunday to Thursday, or even just once during a holiday, it firmly reminds me how good I feel on days I go dry vs days I have alcohol (even just a glass of wine I notice effects my hydration, my energy, my food choices and most important of all...my heart rate (it increases which is a massive negative impact on my health not just my fitness). You may enjoy following the all or nothing technique (or maybe you are ready to give up this habit once and for all - kudos!), however if you still enjoy a glass, and struggle with this ‘diet mentality’ I invite you to practice dry days in your life through this next 365 days and see how it effects your health.
