We are thrilled to share that vaccinations of Long-Term Care residents is underway in our region! Yesterday, a total of 118 vaccines were administered at Maple ...Manor in Tillsonburg, Extendicare in Port Stanley, and PeopleCare in Tavistock. PeopleCare resident, Earl Morrison, was the first resident to be vaccinated. This is an exciting first step in protecting our community from COVID-19. Today, we added 71 cases to our COVID-19 dashboard. This is the highest single-day case increase in our region by far. Local modelling used by Southwestern Pub...lic Health also projects 100 daily cases or more in early January. This is a critical point in the pandemic. Once we see increases approaching 100 per day, it becomes very difficult to contain this virus. Your actions today will impact the number of cases we will see in late January and February. Please help protect the community you love. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3mXCNwU

I am so pleased that so many of you are interested in taking part in this year's Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event. With the latest announcement from ...Doug Ford's team today, it looks like we will be going virtual with this walk which could actually be very cool! (no pun intended) I am looking into what a virtual Coldest Night of the Year walk could look like and should have some information for you by the end of this week. I'm thinking it would be fun to share your favourite 2km or 5km walking route around the area and take a picture or a short video of you out walking there and post it here. In the meantime could you please head over to cnoy.org/stthomas and register your team, or yourself, or join a team for the virtual walk and start sharing your link so family and friends can sponsor you and help us make this the most successful CNOY yet, despite our circumstances? We need your help to blow this thing up to let people know what we do here in our community and how much we need them to walk with us. It's cold out there. No one should have to face it alone.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We really hope despite of the restrictions you were able to have a splendid day, dinner and were able to eat lots of Turkey. I k...now for many people including myself this Thanksgiving was hard because we were not able to be with all our families and it just didn't feel the same, but, there is still so much to be thankful for regardless. I hope everyone enjoys this holiday Monday. Also I would like to mention please, if you know of any child that maybe is home schooled this year or likes to draw. Please let them know about our Remembrance Day Poster & Literary Contest. I will include all the forms at the bottom of this post. You can click on them, save to your computer then print them out. All pictures and literary works have to be handed into the St. Thomas Legion by 5pm Friday Nov 6th as the Judging will take place Sat Nov 7th at 11am in the upstairs hall. Please have the kids and parents really understand the rules. They are listed on one of the forms. I really do not want to see any child's work be disqualified for not following the guidelines. This contest is open to ANY child from Kindergarden to grade 12 that is currently in a school or home schooled within the City of St. Thomas. The child does not have to live within the city limits, just has to attend one of the schools or home schooled from that particular school. Any question that you have please feel free to email me at [email protected] All of our Legions are in so desperate need of help because of Covid 19. We in St. Thomas are only open two days a week for 4 hrs a day. It is impossible for us to maintain this. Our members this year will not be out for Poppy Day offering poppies to the public. We will have to sorely rely on just Poppy Boxes in the stores as well as donations to the Poppy Fund. If anyone would like to donate to the Legion Poppy Fund in honor of our Veteran's then you can please call our Office at 519-631-9840 and leave a message for our Poppy Chairman, Wayne Donnelly. If you have any questions regarding this years Remembrance Day Services at the Veteran's Memorial Gardens please call the Legion office for all the details. What I can tell you is that the Wreaths will be placed at the Memorial Gardens ahead of time. Because of Covid 19 we will not be permitted to parade or have a gathering for the public. Any further information can be maintained by calling the Legion Office. Have a wonderful day, we really do miss you all! Please share this post to all your friends and family can help us make this Remembrance Day that much more special. The judges I have for this years contest and St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston, St. Thomas City Council Member Jeff Kohler and St. Thomas City Police Chief Chris Herridge. To the three of you I thank you so much for coming once again to do this for our youth. Tony Bendel 1st Vice President/P.R.O. We ...need to send a special shoutout to our Honorary Chairman Jeff Kohler whose enthusiasm and tenacity for the role almost have us at our goal! He must be very hard to say no to . Bob McCaig would be very proud. We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the sponsors and donors that have contributed so far. A BIG part of our 50th Anniversary celebration is the Steelway Bob's Walk for Kids, happening all month long. The walkathon was one of the largest fundraisers ...for this agency in the 70's & 80's. Bob McCaig was a founding member of this agency and one of the reasons the walkathon was so successful. His role as Honorary Chairman over the years surely persuaded many businesses to give generously to our kids. Bob believed strongly in the life changing potential of mentoring programs. It's why he quietly continued his support of this agency over the last 50 years. As we reinvent the walkathon virtually, in celebration of this milestone, we are so grateful for Bob and all the other kind and generous individuals who have contributed and supported this agency. #mentoringmatters and we are lucky to live in a community that has supported that ideal for 50 years. We look forward to continuing the important work of igniting power and potential in at-risk children and youth in St. Thomas and Elgin County for many years to come. Please join the celebrations by registering to walk 10km or complete 150 minutes of exercise this October. We are having a special virtual Walk for Kids Day on Saturday, October 17th. It doesn't cost anything to register but you can set up a pledge form, collect pledges to support BBBS of St. Thomas-Elgin and the Sweetgrass Fund, Bob McCaig's legacy fund will match your donation up to $10,000! Register today at www.bbbselgin.org We look forward to seeing you all outside, active and celebrating 50 years with us!! #BiggerTogether #celebrating50years #bobswalkforkids #bbbsste #mentoringmatters Sweetgrass Fund See more

The Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and the Public Health Measures Table, is reducing limits on the number of peopl...e permitted to attend unmonitored and private social gatherings across the entire province. Earlier this week, the government imposed these restrictions in Toronto, Peel Region and Ottawa. The details were provided today by Premier Doug Ford and Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. "Over the past several days, we have seen an alarming growth in the number of COVID-19 cases in the province," said Premier Ford. "Clearly, the numbers are heading in the wrong direction. That's why we are taking decisive action to lower the size of unmonitored private social gatherings in every region of Ontario. We need everyone to follow the public health rules in order to prevent another provincewide lockdown, and protect all our citizens, especially the elderly and the vulnerable." Unmonitored and private social gatherings include functions, parties, dinners, gatherings, BBQs or wedding receptions held in private residences, backyards, parks and other recreational areas. The new limit on the number of people allowed to attend an unmonitored private social gathering across the province is: 10 people at an indoor event or gathering (previous limit of 50); or 25 people at an outdoor event or gathering (previous limit of 100). Indoor and outdoor events and gatherings cannot be merged together. Gatherings of 35 (25 outdoors and 10 indoors) are not permitted. "We are taking further action to slow the spread and limit new cases of COVID-19 by reducing the size of private social gatherings across Ontario. This action is based on the increasing case counts that we are seeing," said Minister Elliott. "As we continue to closely monitor the spread of this virus, we will never hesitate to take further action to protect the health and well-being of all Ontarians." The new limits will not apply to events or gatherings held in staffed businesses and facilities, such as bars, restaurants, cinemas, convention centres, banquet halls, gyms, places of worship, recreational sporting or performing art events. Existing rules, including public health and workplace safety measures for these businesses and facilities, continue to be in effect. These new limits are effective immediately. To support better compliance with public health guidelines, amendments to the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act would, if passed, establish: A new offence regarding hosting or organizing a gathering in residential premises or other prescribed premises that exceeds limits under an order. A minimum fine of $10,000 for organizers of these gatherings. Authority for the Lieutenant Governor in Council to prescribe additional types of premises for the purpose of the new offence. Authority for a police officer, special constable or First Nations constable to order the temporary closure of a premises where there are reasonable grounds to believe that any gathering exceeding the number of people allowed is taking place and require individuals to leave the premises. "It is critical that we continue to take the necessary steps to protect the health and safety of all Ontarians," said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. "We are making it easier for communities to keep people safe through a broad array of tools and deterrents including stiffer penalties for organizing social gatherings at private residences that violate the applicable size restrictions. Today's expansion of gathering restrictions across the province shows that we remain agile in our response to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Ontario." The Chief Medical Officer of Health and other public health experts continue to closely monitor the evolving situation to advise when public health measures or restrictions can be further loosened or if they need to be tightened. It remains critically important for everyone to continue following public health advice. This includes: staying home when ill, or keeping your child home from school when ill, even with mild symptoms; practising physical distancing with those outside your household or social circle, or at gatherings; protecting your social circle; wearing a face covering when physical distancing is a challenge or where it is mandatory to do so; washing your hands frequently and thoroughly; and adhering to gathering limits and rules. For additional protection, the Ontario government is encouraging everyone to download the new COVID Alert app on their smart phone from the Apple and Google Play app stores.
