Shubh Maha Shivaratri! Krishna Chaturdashi, the 14th day of the waning moon, has a special significance, as it is symbolically regarded as Shiva closing his eyes for inner contemplation, the day before the new moon (when his eyes are completely closed for meditation). When it occurs in the Hindu month of Phalguna, Maha Shivaratri, the great festival of Shiva is celebrated annually. In this contemplative festival, fasting, introspection, and meditation on Shiva is generally o...bserved throughout the night. In temples, a spiritual all-nighter, consisting of meditation, chanting and pujas is observed. Shiva is the lord of yogis, the supreme soul power, the destroyer, depicted in many different iconographic forms. He is sthira - tranquility, and experienced in deep stillness of thought and mind. While the present situation in the world prevents us from gathering normally as a group in most congregate settings, creating a sankalpa to meditate a bit deeper, to introspect a bit further and practice stillness, we can connect with the stillness characterized by Shiva's grace, and benefit from this auspicious time. Our spiritual efforts are said to be multiplied in this special night. Chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" or the Mahamrtunjaya Mantra is particularly auspicious, if you are looking for a special practice to implement. In every single one of my natal astrology readings, the question inevitably arises, why do the planets have such a profound effect on our lives? In his profound treatise on Astrology, the ancient seer Parara assures us (through his interactions with his student Maitreya) that the planetary influences are not meant to punish us, but rather guide us. As a divine embodiment of Janrdana (an embodiment of Viu, the eternal sustainer - literally translates as "bestower of human... births"), their main function is to bestow the living effects of our karma, in accordance with our past actions. These living embodiments of Viu are not meant to punish, nor reward us, but rather to ensure that cosmic laws are maintained over the course of time. Ultimately, through our actions, we gradually are drawn through complacency and suffering to realise the higher truths of the universe, and thus evil forces and influences are destroyed. If it were not so, we'd be living in absolute universal chaos, if at all. As the Buddha teaches us, suffering is quite inevitable, and a normal part of human existence. But when we ascend our consciousness through meditation and connection to our higher selves, and begin to work in alignment with the planetary forces, we gradually alter our frequency, naturally allowing some of the higher aspects of the planets to come through in our lives. In other words, depending on how fixed the karmas we face are, we can't always put a stop on them, but we can mitigate somewhat, and lessen that feeling of "swimming upstream". As Jyotishis (Astrologers), it is our primary responsibility to enlighten through understanding and knowledge, and interpret the qualities of time (past present and likely future) so that we can acknowledge the challenges we face with courage and assurance that our path is ultimately leading us to divinity. We use the various tools at our disposal to assist the client (such as mantras, rituals, connecting to the planets through Vedic deities) to improve the qualities of how the planetary interactions are "showing up" for us. This is both a science and an art form, and to me is ultimately the magic that separates Vedic Astrology from other tools. As an ongoing student of the Sri Achyutananda Das tradition of Vedic Astrology, I'm amazed at just how much wisdom is made available through our teachers to guide and light our way. During last year's lockdown, as some of you are already aware, I began a lengthy project researching horoscopes and writing in hopes of obtaining my professional certification with the Council of Vedic Astrology. I just wanted to take an opportunity to thank everyone who helped me undertake the research, and all who assisted me with sharing birth information, and their support. Also, a huge expression of gratitude to my Jyotish Guru, Freedom Cole at Science Of Light for hel...ping me to the finish line. And also to several close friends, study buddies, and family members who gave me their unconditional support (you know who you are). After a long period of research and study, I'm pleased to announce that I have completed the process for the Jyotia Virada level of proficiency in Vedic Astrology. While I am who I am, and that doesn't change because of a certificate, it is my hope that in successfully completing this project I can assure my clients in my practice that my knowledge and skillset have been validated by an external party. I'm always grateful to hear back from clients who have experienced positive changes in their life. Vedic Astrology focuses heavily on remedial measures to alleviate difficult transitions or karmic periods that we invariably experience.
