Phoenix Blues Society BluesBytes Advance Text Rolling into his sixth decade playing the blues, Kenny Blues Boss Wayne delivers another fine set of piano-drive...n blues and boogie woogie with Go, Just Do It! (Stony Plain Records). The new set features thirteen tracks, ten written by Wayne, and guest vocalists Dawn Tyler Watson and Diane Schuur, along with harmonica player Sherman Doucette, horn section Jerry Cook (tenor/baritone saxes) and Vince Mai (trumpet), and rapper Cory Spruell (a.k.a. SeQuaL, Wayne’s son). Wayne’s regular band includes Russell Jackson (bass), Yuji Ihara (guitars), Joey The Pocket DiMarco (drums) and Barry Sharbo (tamborine). Wayne’s compositions have an attractive pop sheen to them, and he has a knack for catchy lyrics and concepts. The title track opens the disc, a tough and funky number with guest vocals from Ms. Watson, followed by the irresistible You Did A Number On Me (with backing vocals from Julie Masi from The Parachute Club), and the Crescent City-flavored Sittin’ In My Rockin’ Chair. Wayne also covers two Percy Mayfield tracks, the first being You’re In For A Big Surprise, which features Ms. Schuur’s dynamite co-lead vocal, and a fun take of I Don’t Want To Be The President, which features SeQuaL. Wayne and Watson share vocals on the ominous, mid-tempo Sorry Ain’t Good Enough, while Motor Mouth Woman is an entertaining tune lamenting a overly-chatty mate, and Lost And Found mixes blues and soul deftly. Doucette adds harp to a jumping downhome read of J.J. Cale’s They Call Me The Breeze that really sparkles, and Wayne’s own Bumping Down The Highway is a cool instrumental that lets the band have the spotlight, while the effervescent That’s The Way She Is sings the praises of a particularly fine woman. Wayne closes the disc with the jaunty T&P Train 400, a rollicking train song, and the exciting boogie woogie instrumental Let The Rock Roll, which shows the 75-year-old piano man still knows his way around the keyboard. Kenny Blues Boss Wayne is one of those blues artists who deserves to be better known.he releases one quality album after another, always giving listeners a lot to enjoy. Go, Just Do It! is another fine addition to his already-impressive set of recordings and will surely satisfy blues fans. Graham Clarke See more

***Wow # 20 of the elite top 50..Congrats Kenny BluesBoss Wayne 20. GO, JUST DO IT!, Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne (Stony Plain) Go, Just Do It! could not be better... titled to capture the joie de vivre Piano Hall of Fame inductee Kenny Blues Boss Wayne and company deliver here, starting with the horn-goosed funk blast of Just Do it and culminating with a jump blues worthy of Louis Jordan. Wayne, now 75, never fails to up the energy quotient and set an elevated standard of musicianship for one and all, but he’s taken those qualities to a higher plane on this outing. Among the notables on board are three award winning vocalists, Blues Hall of Fame bassist (formerly with B.B. King) Russell Jackson, powerhouse horn players Jerry Cook (sax) and Vince Mai (trumpet), wailing harp master Sherman Tank Doucette (who dominates the lively shuffle treatment of JJ Cale’s They Call Me the Breeze), electrifying Boogie Patrol guitarist Yuji Ihara, drummer Joey The Pocket DiMarco and Barry Sharbo on tambourine. Generous spirit that he is, Wayne gives everyone a moment, or several, to shine even as he takes the spotlight to remind us in no uncertain terms why he’s credited with returning the piano to the fore in the blues band context. The Blues Boss and Diane Schurr, in a rousing performance that should inspire listeners to check out her own fine new album, Running on Faith, spice up a grinding take on Percy Mayfield’s scalding blues, You’re In For a Big Surprise, which follows closely in the wake of Just Do It, wherein Dawn Tyler Watson adds a sassy distaff voice to the proceedings. Similarly, Wayne, with Julie Masi fashioning silky female background responses, offers a spirited account of love’s tight grip on the heart in You Did a Number on Me, a driving tune enhanced by the Blues Boss’s frisky 88s and Ihara’s piercing lead guitar solo. Hey everybody, here's some good news! Russell Jackson and I are working on doing a tribute performance and recording of the two late great Chicago blues men who... seemed to have been over looked, Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim. That was the sound during the heyday of the early 50's. During this pandemic crisis, things are being scaled down so we decided to do this trio project until things get back to normal. Take care and be safe! See more
