Modern high-bank waterfront home, Courtenay BC Built on a challenging site with a narrow frontage and very steep slope below, we employed a walk-out lower level to maximize the available level land for patios and landscaping. The main floor is divided with a vaulted living/dining/kitchen zone on one side and a more intimate master bedroom wing on the other. Fir post and beams support the roof and add warmth and a sense of structural strength to the light-filled space. This home was a creative partnership between John Gower Design, Linzie Heffernan Interior Design and the builder, Griffith Homes. Photos are by Luke Phillips, lspmedia.net
A few words of ours published in the current issue of CV Collective. (Credit for the design belongs to the professional team named in the article, who did an outstanding job.)
Okay, does it even need to be said? 2020 has been a real dumpster fire so far and on so many levels, we can't even. But there's hope on the horizon -- the smog engulfing Vancouver Island is going to lift by the end of the week; and notwithstanding the global chaos, some good things have been happening. If you need your spirits lifted, here's a small sampling of recent good news. "New York Turned the World’s Largest Garbage Dump into a Green Oasis of Native Grasses That Also P...owers Homes" https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/worlds-largest-garbage-dum/ A local story that went viral: "Orca that carried dead calf for 17 days gives birth to healthy new baby" https://www.cbc.ca//southern-resident-whales-new-calf-1.57 And it seems that even smog can be turned into useable energy. This is the food to avoid if you care about climate change:
The COVID crisis has thrown the plight of the homeless into sharper relief than ever before. Expanding tent cities isn't the answer. Here's a solution that's worked in some U.S. cities: https://thetyee.ca///08/24/What-Tiny-Homes-Offer-Homeless/
People of Courtenay, have your say! Sharing this useful reminder that there's still time to weigh in on the new Official Community Plan. Deadline to complete the online survey (about 10-15 minutes of your time) is September 8. https://www.comoxvalleyrecord.com//letter-time-running-ou/

Climate science is a lot older than many of us think. This short and illuminating video focuses on a few key figures who started it all: https://aeon.co//climate-change-science-is-centuries-not-d
Okay, so... lessons learned. Here's the cautionary tale of another kind of lockdown, starring a counterculture theatre troupe, an oil billionaire, and -- perhaps most surprisingly -- Steve Bannon. https://www.theguardian.com//spaceship-earth-arizona-biosp
