It’s my final week in Saskatoon for the foreseeable future! (...I mean ‘making plans’ is SO 2019) No better way to start a new chapter than to start a new journal! This little guy (#17) has been the longest I’ve had a journal before filling it - at 15 months! And holy mittens there are some GEMS of insights and moments captured in it. There’s something so special about filtering thoughts and ideas through mind, body, hand to pen and onto paper to manifest those creati...ve firings out into the physical world. It’s like a simultaneous upload/download of thought and expression to free yourself and make room for more ideas to come in. Who else still writes in a journal these days? Palm oil. It really sucks. A year ago I traveled to the rainforest in Borneo, Malaysia to see some of the last wild orangutan populations. Let's just say both the cross jungle flights (Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan) and hours of driving deep in - well what should have been pristine lush rainforest were simply rows upon rows as far as you could see of monocrop palm trees. You hear about it occasionally on the news but traveling for two days without seeing anything else was simply... astonishing. Now, some say palm oil itself is actually a fairly healthy oil and if done sustainably is quite efficient and useful (it's still very high in saturated fats especially if produced from the palm kernal pit and not the fruit, extracted with a gas hydrocarbon, woof). Regardless, with big oil companies from China, Finland, Indonesia and Malaysia seeing it as a slash and burn short term cash grab it's truly devastating. No animals can survive among the endless lines of palm trees. There's no external foot source, birds can't even land on the spiky leaves and they soak up all the water and minerals turning rich land into a wasteland in less than two decades. Yes, the stuff is in everything. Cooking oil, junk food, wrapping, plastics, etc. So let's please read labels and avoid products with refined palm oil and choose to buy products that have sustainable oil listed and sourced. https://www.johnearly.ca/single-post/borneo
